Bridgend, Wales:Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School

ACO has provided a series of functional and subtle drainage solutions for the £20m state-of-the-art Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School in Bridgend, Wales. The three-storey siteincludes a community leisure block incorporating both sports and a dance hall, and outdoorplaying pitches that will be open for use by the wider community. Among the solutionsprovided by ACO were shower channels, floor gullies for the toilets and drainage channels forexternal paving.

Seven changing areas were required for the leisure and sports facilities and ACO shower gullieswas the ideal solution, providing compact and attractive capacity drainage in corrosion-resistant stainless steel.

For the exterior of the building, ACO provided a discreet series of “hidden” drainage channelsfor the external paving, supporting the need to maintain clean, functional design throughoutthe building. These products were specified from ACO Water Management MultiDrain MDpolymer concrete channel system.

Llandudno, Wales:Welsh Assembly Building

The Llandudno Junction Office, as it is called, is one of three Welsh Assembly governmentadministrative hubs sited in the Principality. The offices opened in September 2010, cover8000 sq m and accommodate up to 650 staff. The design of the building incorporates localmaterials, including the famous slate from Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda. In addition, theLlandudno Junction office has won several Green accreditations such as a BREEAM ‘Excellent’rating and has, uniquely in Wales, an EPC “A” rating (the average for public buildings is “D”),becoming the most energy efficient government building in the region.

Such a prestigious project required particular attention to every detail. For this reason thearchitects and contractors selected the well-known brand of fabricated access covers, ACOAluCover. This recessed aluminium access cover provides a high quality and lightweightsolution, with an integrated grit seal and secure 4-point corner locking. Its precisionmanufacture ensures minimal gap between frame and cover, making it the ideal choice foraesthetically sensitive projects. Bristol:Steam Ship Great Britain

The latest shallow invert surface waterdrainage system, developed and manufacturedby ACO Building Drainage, the UK’s leadingspecialist in drainage systems and corrosionresistant building products, has been installedat the prestigious Steam Ship Great Britainhousing development in Bristol. Called theDeckLine, this versatile and innovativedrainage system enabled the developers tocreate a highly effective 100% watertightsolution that complements the sophisticatedaesthetic qualities of the landmarkdevelopment, while also being cost effective, quick and simple to install.

The development by Linden Homes, winnersof the Best Large Housebuilders Award 2010,consists of 145 one and two bed luxuryapartments in the heart of Bristol’s historicharbour and has been designed to capture thecharacter of the original Victorian dockyard, providing a fitting and authentic backdrop tothe SS Great Britain in the original dry dock.

Linden Homes selected the ACO Building Drainage DeckLine galvanised steel system for thisunique development, using it for drainage channels in the building’s external cantileveredwalkways. The channel drainage system was chosen in order to avoid positioning a largenumber of unsightly downpipes at 6m interval, with obvious cosmetic benefits. In addition, the developers required a system that offered flexible yet watertight joints.

London:City Hall

A new drainage system developed by ACOBuilding Drainage has been installed atLondon’s City Hall, curing the building of astanding water problem around its perimeterclose to the main entrance. Manufacturedentirely from stainless steel, the channeldrainage system has been designed to runexactly parallel to the faceted glass façade, allowing it to be installed close to thestructure and complementing the strikingvisual qualities of the building and itssurroundings.

Located on the south bank of the Thames, alongside the new More Londondevelopment, City Hall is one of thecapital’s most symbolically importantbuildings. City Hall's energy efficient, sphere like steel and glass form is designedto minimise perimeter surface area, reducing heat loss and heat gain.Completed in 2001, the building is hometo the Mayor of London, the LondonAssembly and the GLA.

The new system was manufactured in modular form so that it could be readily assembled onsite. Each section is made up from two 1500mm straight runs of 155mm wide grade 304stainless steel channel. These are welded together at an angle of 15 degrees to form a wide‘V’ shape that fits exactly to the angle of the glazed panels of the building. The flanged endsof each section are precision cut to form the same angle when bolted together. To ensure pedestrian safety, the installed channel is fitted with a Heelsafe perforated gratingthat is locked in place for additional security. Two 100mm outlets connect sump sectionswithin the new channel to the site’s existing rainwater manholes.

London:One New Change Shopping Centre

ACO Building Drainage introduced CE marking onits standard products ahead of schedule in 2011.Providing assurance to our customers has been akey driver for ACO. We have done everything toprotect our clients and end-users. Please contact usfor help and advice.

The implications of not carrying CE marking onproducts are potentially very serious for themanufacturer and supply chain. After 1 July 2013it will become a criminal offence to place anyconstruction product covered by hENs on themarket without an authorised CE mark. Anycompanies who do so could find themselvespursued by Trading Standards. If convicted, thiscould mean a fine and even potentially a prisonsentence. So make sure that you follow the rules.

ACO resources include the largest picklepassivation plant in Europe.

The standard ACO Building Drainage manufacturingprocess uses the pickle passivation chemicalfinishing process to restore the products to their fulloptimum corrosion resistant state without damagingthe surface finish. This is considered the best post-fabrication surface treatment method.

Pickle Passivation fully restores the corrosionresistance properties of stainless steel ensuringoptimum performance.
