He believed that “ the

relationships of the parts

and materials of the

building are a working

morality”.

He was influenced by

• The natural slope of the site is utilized to the

advantage of a multi-level processing system.

• Milk receiving is done at the roof.

• Processing is done at the second level.

• The third and the lowest level accommodates

worker’s amenities.

• Walls and structure are more theatrical than

technical in their function of containing and

supporting the process within.

• The equipment is framed in a 7 sq. m concrete

grid.

• On exterior the

ventilation points are

expressed as large

shafts that rise above the

roof level.

• They evacuate the hot

air by natural convection

eliminating the need for a

mechanical exhaust

system.

• Graphic banding of the

exterior finish helps

articulate the muscular

feature of the building.

• The socialistic emphasis on

office-worker amenities and

environmentally sensitive work

space remind of a Dutch

architect “Herman

Hertzberger”.

• More exclusive functions

such as private offices and

meeting rooms are grouped at

the top of the building.

• The lager public spaces

including the reception and

other departmental offices are

at the lower floors.

Area : 2700 sq. m

• Vertical services –

fire escapes, main

stairs and elevator

towers – are

concentrated at the

rear of the structure

as clearly expressed

shafts.

• The exterior is

finished with a rough

plaster composed of

marble chips and

white cement.

• Kanvinde has mostly designed research and

educational areas.

• He liked to reveal the internal functions in a

building ( office block, walkway, auditorium ) as

separate masses.

• The quality of execution and finishes reflects

his attention to detailing and an experienced yet

relating attitude of design.

• “The lightness spoke of the primacy of idea

over matter, logic over circumstances”, it was the

theme that never left his architecture.
