Volunteer of the month

Congratulations to

Robert Udilwa

"Robert is one of the most valuable people I have ever worked with.

He is open minded and very generous with his ideas and delivers

desired results. He did an exceptional job on the FAQ's project. We

learned a lot of answers to unusual questions from him. Sometimes

we had difficulty finding resources to answer some complicated

questions but Robert was able to provide that to us. He is not only

result driven but also an inspiring colleague with a very good sense of

humor. Robert has also been a valuable volunteer at the Helpdesk and

THIC. At the Helpdesk he worked conscientiously to helping with

clients' queries, at THIC, he is a courteous and patient information

officer, always treats each visitor with uttermost professionalism, he

is also much respected and treasured for his linguistic skills by our

colleagues from the municipality. As a team member, he is reliable

and flexible, always willing to help out, often even at a last minute

call.

Thank you Robert, we greatly appreciate your tireless work at

ACCESS, and many congratulations!!

Editor`s Notes

» Springtime has finally decided to grace us with its presence and right in time

for summer! Nonetheless, we should take what we get and enjoy the sun and rising

temperatures now before it all goes by so quickly, leaving us wondering what happened to

time. Having just read a short novel “Einstein’s Dreams” by Alan Lightman, I can draw

the conclusion that when we ask ourselves “what has happened to time and where has the

summer gone?” it’s because we often spend our time doing so much at such speed that we

can’t even remember it.

With this issue I want to encourage everyone

to go outside every time the sun shines, even if

it’s just standing on your balconies, taking a

stroll through a nearby park. Whatever you decide to

do, enjoy it slowly, savour the moments you are just

simply happy that the sun is out and I guarantee

that those moments will come to you in the fall and

the winter to keep you warm. Gather up a few friends

and enjoy an afternoon picnic in a nearby park,

sleep, read, walk in the sun and you will see how

that clears everything else away even just

temporary.

Savour each moment this Spring and Summer, each conversation, each laughter and

each individual friend, and everything you do will last a lot longer if you stop and take

it all in. In this issue I have added some recipes that are easy to take to the park,

easy spring and summer drinks and inexpensive ideas to have some fun outside. I hope

your spring and summer is filled with wonderful things to do and that you are able to

enjoy it at an all deliberate speed!

Happy Reading!

Meet The Volunteers

Krisztina Csilla Katona Those who have met Krisztina know they have someone who will listen attentively to your ideas, plans and goals and share in on their enthusiasm. :Krisztina is Hungarian and was born in Transilvania(Romania), she has been working as an au pair in The Nederland’s since September 2010. She has been volunteering with ACCESS since December 2011 working for the Information Resources Department and Training Department. She has also been of invaluable help with the programme "Accessing the Netherlands" which she really has enjoyed being a part of. Krisztina studies English Literature and Grammar and her hobbies are: dancing, singing, organizing events, and learning languages. She is a strong believer that “God has given everyone many sets of skills and they are there to be put to use” Everyone that knows Krisztina also knows that she is a devout Christian and enjoys the company of her Church society as well as singing in the choir. Her dream is to highlight the tourism of Transilvania and to have her own happy and fulfilled family someday. She says “The biggest goal in my Life is to love Life and to follow the way which was planned for me”. Krisztina, Thank you for all you do at ACCESS and beyond, we wish you all the best in everything you do and glad to have you as part of the team!

Juliana Bernardes da Silva To find Juliana at ACCESS one has to look for someone always doing her job dutiful in a corner but with a wide smile on her face, everyone that has met her knows she is a warm and kind young lady. Juliana was born in São Paulo Brazil and has been volunteering at ACCESS since March 2011. Juliana considers herself a very active person who likes to keep busy, no wonder she works within 3 departments at ACCESS, the IRD, Finance and Administration Departments, wow! Talk about keeping busy. She uses her free time to study languages such as Dutch, working on improving her English and Spanish, among these things she is also likes reading, cycling and going to the gym. Going to the gym is like therapy for her, which she enjoys but also helps her to feel better overall. She also likes zumba and aerobics classes. Travelling is also a hobby for her, whenever she and her husband can they travel around Europe and or simply take small trips around the Dutch cities. Living in the Netherlands has been her first trip abroad and she would like to enjoy this opportunity as much as possible. Her background is in Finance and Human Resources and one of her goals is to receive an MA in Finance. At the moment she is studying for the IELTS ( English Certificate requirement) and intends to start the course next year. She says “Volunteering at Access is a great pleasure for me because I like to help people, to be part of an expat team in which people are in the same situation as I am , and to keep using my professional skills. People at ACCESS are very friendly, kind and I feel so happy when am helping.” Thank you for all you do at ACCESS and beyond, we wish you all the success in all your endeavors!

UTRECHT INSTITUTE of LINGUISTICS, UTRECHT UNIVERSITY EARLY CHILD BILIGUALISM PROJECT

We’ve just started a new follow-up project to the Early Child Bilingualism project on language proficiency in bilingual children. As part of this project, we are looking for families in the Netherlands with young children growing up with English and Dutch. The goal of the project is to find out to what extent children are dominant in one of their two languages, and whether this is directly related to the amount and type of exposure to Dutch and English the children receive. Who are we looking for? We are looking for families in the area of Utrecht and Amersfoort with children around the age of 3 who have been brought up with English (from one parent/caregiver) and Dutch (from the other) from birth. Participation would involve two home visits from our research team, once for English and once for Dutch. Each visit will consist of two parts: the child participating in spontaneous play with the parent/caretaker who speaks the language in question (45 to 60 mins) and the child completing a vocabulary assessment (10 to 15 mins). In addition, on one of these two visits, one of the parents will be asked to fill out a questionnaire (approx. 30 mins). If you have a child who matches this description and you would be willing to take part, we would be very pleased if you would contact us by replying to this message. If you have any questions or would like to receive further information before deciding whether or not you wish to take part, feel free to contact us by e-mail. WORKSHOP What does the Heart have to do with achieving your ideal weight?

Where: Het Coachhuis Raamweg 4 The Hague When: Saturday, June 16th from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm Contact either Jacinta or Mary Jane for more information and/or to register Stress can make you fat! Wouldn’t it be great not to count calories and be able to count on yourself? In this one day workshop you will learn how to gain control over your stress reactions. You will achieve greater emotional balance and learn how to eliminate emotional eating. Instead of going on another diet, we’ll teach you about going to your heart. Jacinta Noonan and Mary Jane Roy combine their two complementary approaches in this new and unique workshop. You will discover that developing and nurturing yourself on the inside has a direct effect on what happens to you on the outside. You will learn how to recognize the stress triggers which lead to emotional eating patterns. As well, you will learn how to transform your stress reactions into supportive emotions. You will leave the workshop taking with you

new insights into why you do what you do and how to do it differently

valuable information based on fact

practical tips and suggestions that you can implement immediately

The workshop is highly interactive and will include demonstrations, pair work activities and lively discussions. The fee for this one day workshop is 75,- euro inclusive VAT, refreshments, lunch and a personal workbook. Please reserve your place by Monday June 11th. [email protected] [email protected] www.creatingwaves.nu www.bigontheinside.com

Here are some comments from participants of our previous presentations: “I really enjoyed both presentations very much. After many attempts to follow a diet I start to realise that the problem is not just food, but also emotion and "brains". It was really interesting to hear more about the subject and it made me curious to learn more. The solution is not the "perfect diet", but the perfect mind set. And maybe I should focus more on myself for a while instead of making everybody else happy. “

“I thought both sections of the presentation were very interesting, motivational and useful for my situation…Jacinta’s

presentation gave very useful tools to help start working through it. Your presentation, Mary Jane was hugely interesting. I

didn't know that stress can have so profound effects on the heart and the body. It really gave the motivation to recognise

the stress triggers and try to minimise them. And also to try to be kind to myself and remember to laugh more. The venue

was very nice too and the group small enough for everybody to have a chance to comment if they wanted to.”

MICROSOFT WORD 2010 DEMYSTIFIED On Monday 7 May about 11 volunteers attended a workshop about formatting in Word 2010, given by William Rumbley-van Gurp. William is an ACCESS trainer and certified Microsoft trainer. He offers courses for all Microsoft software at all levels. To begin with, William asked us for which purposes we used Word. Most of us mentioned personal documents and some also mentioned reports. William explained that formatting is only useful for longer documents, such as reports. One-page documents like application letters don’t need much formatting. During a 1,5 hour session we learned the basics of formatting, such as the 4 levels of formatting (file type, section, paragraph and font). We also learned that headers and footers don’t have to necessarily be the same for the whole document. They can be different for every section and even for even odd pages. For me, a very valuable tip was the use of “reveal formatting”. This is an overview in a separate small screen where you can see how your document or a part of it has been formatted. This is especially useful if things don’t work out as you want to. You can easily see what is wrong and/or compare it with a part of your document that has been formatted in the right way. It reminds me to the old days of WordPerfect 5.1 (in the early 1990s) which had a function to see the codes that were used so you could easily see what went wrong with the formatting. I have been missing that option since I used Word and now I learned that it is available in Word as well. A wonderful discovery! When you try to copy charts or tables from Excell to Word it often doesn’t work out as you would like to. William taught us that you can create those tables and charts with Word as well by using “insert chart”. At the end of the training we learned lots of new things which are very valuable in the daily use of Word.

http://cftrainingtoday.com/. An overview of the trainings, William offers, is available on If there is a group of ACCESS volunteers who would like to have a tailor made training in any Microsoft Office product and they have similar needs, William can organise a course for them for a special price. Thank you very much William for this interesting workshop.

ACCESS SOCIAL DRINKS MAY 15TH @ HET HEDEN

On Tuesday afternoon, the 15th April, we had our monthly social drinks at Het Heden, where we were joined by a group of volunteers for a few drinks, to chat and catch up. We toasted the volunteer of the month Marcelle D`Netto, who was really happy to receive her award. As usual we exchange a few laughs and brief catch ups since these are a few of the times we can all come together at the same time. I encourage you all to join us at the social events we organize in order to keep in touch and get to know the many volunteers that make ACCESS a possibility! Thank you for being there and see you again at the next social gathering! A few pictures here below having fun with the ACCESS crew! .

SCHEVININGEN FLAG DAY (Vlaggetjesdag)

When: Jun 2012 (annual) Where: Scheveningen Beach Cost: Free The Dutch love their herring so much that they devote a day each year to celebrating the first big catches- Scheveningen Flag Day! The coast and harbour at Scheveningen fill with a hungry crowd ready to sample the fish Flag Day also gives local tradesmen the opportunity to display their wares, while the fishermen show off the fruits of their labour. The herring ships race back to port, where the first to arrive is awarded a cash prize (which is donated by the winning ship's captain to Greenpeace). Needless to say, Queen Beatrix is given the first barrel of the new herring catch. If you are going to sample some herring while you stroll around, it's worth knowing that the

. Dutch eat theirs raw, with plenty of chopped onions http://www.vlaggetjesdag.com/
