Your Connection – Online Learning

• Almost any dedicated broadband connection – Spectrum cable and Verizon Fios are most common here – is easily fast enough for most distance learning applications

• “Dedicated” = not shared – be aware of other applications and people that are sharing your bandwidth

• Mobile phone “hotspots” can work if needed• Online testing with UBLearns / Respondus requires a

continuous, stable Internet connection

https://www.speedtest.net/

Page 8: Academic Computing @ UB - emmer.com

Available Wireless Networks• 802.11 g/n/ac wireless network (Wi-Fi) covering much of UB’s

campuses• Eduroam – preferred, works at many other schools• UB_Secure – secure, only at UB• UB_Connect – for visitors and devices – AVOID THIS

NETWORK• Extended outdoor access – Parker, Furnas and Greiner Lots

Page 9: Academic Computing @ UB - emmer.com

UB Networking - VPN• VPN = Virtual Private Network

• Simulates an on-campus connection from off campus – but only if you’re accessing UB resources

Your Computer - Storage

• Be careful on quiz and exam days – running out of disk space can crash your computer!

• Internal hard drives MIGHT be upgradeable, but often aren’t• Some computers also support SD cards• External hard drives are an easy, inexpensive option (4TB <

$100)• Backing up to an external drive

• MacOS: Just connect the drive• Windows: connect the drive, then run “Backup and Restore”

or “File History”

Page 17: Academic Computing @ UB - emmer.com

shared by others may not automatically sync

Page 18: Academic Computing @ UB - emmer.com

Cloud Storage – Box Sync vs. Box Drive

• Box Sync – copies files to your local hard drive• Advantage: files are available even without an Internet

connection• Disadvantage: uses up local disk space

• Box Drive – creates a virtual drive on your computer that’s connected via the Internet

• Advantage: doesn’t use local disk space• Disadvantage: files not available without an Internet

connection
