Maslow's was of an opinion that until these needs were satisfied to a degree to maintain life, no other motivating factors can work.

Until a man’s physiological needs get fulfilled, he can not move to the next level in hierarchy.

Once physiological needs are met, one's attention turns to safety and security in order to be free from the threat of physical and emotion.

Safety: A Most Powerful Safety: A Most Powerful NeedNeedBasically these needs

are related to freedom from fear or pain.

Security needs serve as motivators and affects one’s attitude towards the choice of job.

Such needs can be satisfied by the management by providing pension plans, insurance plans etc.

Once a person feels a sense of “Belonging", the need to be feel important arises. Esteem needs may be classified as internal or external.

Esteem Needsemotional (ego)

Internal esteem are those related to self esteem such as self respect and achievement. External esteem needs are those such as social status recognition, some esteem needs are:

Self-respectAchievementRecognitionReputationAccording to Maslow, once people begin

to satisfy their need to belong, they want to be held in esteem both by themselves and by others.

Self-Actualization NeedsSelf-Actualization NeedsMaslow regards as the highest need in

his hierarchy. one’s It is the drive to become what one

is capable of becoming ,it includes growth, achieving one’s potential and self-fulfillment.

Self actualization is the desire to become more and more what one is and to become every thing that one is capable of becoming.

Page 21: Abraham Maslow Theory

Self-actualized people tend to have needs such as:

Truth JusticeWisdomMeaning• According to Maslow, only a small

percentage of the population reaches the level of self -actualization

Page 22: Abraham Maslow Theory

ConclusionConclusionAmong the five levels of needs hierarchy

people have greater satisfaction at the physiological and safety levels.

At other level, by and large people are not satisfied and if satisfied they are partially satisfied.

As each of these needs are substantially satisfied, the next need become dominant.

From the standpoint of motivation, the theory would say that although no need is ever fully gratified, a substantially satisfied need no longer motivates.

Page 23: Abraham Maslow Theory

So if you want to motivate someone, you need to understand what level of the hierarchy that person is and focus on satisfying those needs or needs above that level.

Maslow’s need theory has received wide recognization , particularly among practicing managers.

This can be attributed to the theory's intuitive logic ease of understanding.

However, research does not validate these theory.

Maslow provide no empirical evidence and other several studies that sought to validate the theory found no support for it.
