AAUW Position Description: AAUW Funds, Development, or Fundraising Chair Core Responsibilities:

• Promote and oversee growth of AAUW’s mission through a fundraising plan with goals and measureable outcomes.

• Understand all facets of AAUW Funds philanthropic programs, fund names and numbers.

• Work with AAUW program and membership priorities.

• Consult with the state AAUW Funds chair regarding AAUW philanthropic structure, objectives, and contributions management.

• Disseminate AAUW research & fundraising updates to board.

Funds Responsibilities continued: • Submit all contributions generated by fundraising in a

timely manner to the national office.

• Help to identify potential donors and opportunities for building fundraising capacity, including collaborative partnerships with other organizations.

• Encourage attendance at AAUW Funds luncheon in the Fall.

• Encourage help with unfinished California endowments.

Monthly Duties

• July-August– Prepare budget needs, checking account transactions,

and income statement from previous years figures– Write introduction on funds for newsletter

• September-October-November– Prepare and send letter asking for funds from

individual members– Send monthly article on different aspects of funds for

each newsletter during September to May– Publish availability of fellowships and funds

Monthly Duties, continued• December 1 – Send Funds donation to national and copy

to state Funds Director

• February 15 – Submit to AAUW-CA names for a Named Gift (one per $750.00) to state – way to honor your members who work hard for the branch

• Can nominate member for state named gift – the state gives only one per year to an outstanding state member

• During months September to May– Help fund raising for Funds– In May check certificates for accuracy for branch

members and present them to members

Request a Fellow Speaker• Having a Fellow come speak at your event is

motivating to members.

• You may have one fellow speaker every two years. Two branches could meet together so every year a fellow would come to speak.

GUIDELINES FOR REQUESTING A FELLOW:

• Do not contact fellow or grant recipients directly. • No expenses should be incurred by the fellow.• Branches must offer a minimum honorarium of $50.• Transportation (.50/mile) or public transportation paid. • Must provide overnight accommodation, if necessary.• Speaker’s meal must be provided, if applicable.• Allow a minimum of 20 minutes to speak.

When you fund raise• Take advantage of our entire area

• If appealing to all members in your area as well as local community, you will generate more funds

• Take a look at the distances between our branches

• Often working together will be beneficial to all

• ASAP publicize to media and neighboring branches

AAUW Funds 2010-2011

• California had 45 fellowships and grant recipients and 9 members served on selection panels

• 45 Colleges and Universities are members.• 12 California women attended the National

Conference for college women student leaders. (NCCWSL)

• 28 attorneys provides pro bono reduced or contingency fee serves to those referred by AAUW.

The Legal Advocacy Fund (#3999)

• The Legal Advocacy Fund supports the protection of the legal rights of those who are facing discrimination. Some of LAF’s programs include

• Legal Case Support, which protects LAF plaintiffs by supporting workplace sex discrimination cases.

• LAF Case Support Travel Grants, which can provides programs delivered by LAF plaintiffs and lawyers.

• Campus Outreach Projects, which protect college students from discrimination, harassment, and assault through on-campus program grants.

The Educational Opportunities Fund (#4336)

• The Educational Opportunities Fund supports educational and lifelong learning opportunities that give women a chance for a lifetime of success. Some of our programs include:

• Fellowships and Grants: There are hundreds of endowed fund numbers, each for a specific fellowship, career development grant, community action grant, or selected professions award.

• The Fellows Alumnae Initiative, which inspires women by providing access to the network of past and current AAUW fellows and grantees.

• AAUW National Tech Trek, which educates and inspires eighth grade girls across the country in science, technology, engineering, and math through weeklong camps.

The Public Policy Fund (#4337)

• The Public Policy Fund supports advocacy for public policies and laws that are fair to women. Public policy programs include:

• Government Relations: AAUW advocates on Capitol Hill and in the White House, ensuring that our voices are heard in the halls of Congress and at the tables of power when decisions that affect women and girls are made.

• Civic Engagement, which helps women act as their own advocates by providing members with the information and tools to build robust woman-to-woman voter registration and turnout drives in their communities.

• Field Organizing, which engages individuals and branches in public policy advocacy through Impact Grants, Action Network, the Two-Minute Activist program, and Washington Update.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund (#9170)

• The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund supports AAUW research to provide analysis, data, and accurate information about issues that are important to women and girls.

• Past reports include Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (2010), Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School (2011), The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap (2012), and Graduating to a Pay Gap: The Earnings of Women and Men One Year after College Gradation (2012).

The Leadership Programs Fund (#4339)

• The Leadership Programs Fund (#4339) supports programs that develop women’s potential to lead in their schools, communities, and country. Leadership programs include:

• The National Conference for College Women Student Leaders held annually in Washington, D.C.

• Campus Action Projects: AAUW awards grants to deliver programs guided by the findings and recommendations of AAUW research to address a gender-based issue in their community.

• Elect Her, which teaches leaders the skills they need to run for student government. This program successfully increases the number of women who are involved in making decisions that affect all students on campus

How to Make a Donation• Please make all checks payable to AAUW Funds. If you

prefer to restrict your gift to a specific fund, please indicate the name or number of the fund in the memo section of your check or any accompanying document and mail to AAUW, P.O. Box 98045, Washington, DC 20090-8045. Or you can contribute online.

• If you have any questions about giving to AAUW or would like to receive information about including AAUW in your estate plans, please contact national at 202.728.3307 or contact them by e-mail ([email protected]<[email protected]).

• Contributions to all of these programs are fully tax deductible.

Two New Funds Added Recently

– International project grant is $50,000 for those who were previously awarded so they can return to their country and put their project to action

– Leadership Opportunity Fund is $100,000 where you can assign a name
