Fullerton women return
Story by.
A group of young women stood in a line facing the far side of Cal State Fullerton's Titan
Gymnasium. All wearing matching orange shirts and white shorts, all ready to take the court.
They bowed their heads and gripped one another's hands, silent in a moment of reflection.
Hailey King, close to the end of the line, let go of her teammates' hands. She used the collar of
her warm-up shirt to dry her tears. Cameras flickered on King and the cry-stained faces of her
teammates and coaches, with one noticeably absent.
The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team was
set to face UC Riverside in the first game since the
tragic death of assistant coach Monica Quan last
Sunday, Feb. 3, and a Riverside police officer on
Thursday. The team played with heavy hearts for
"Coach Mo" Saturday afternoon in a Big West
Conference game.
The final score — a 64-45 loss — held significantly less
meaning than usual. What was important was that for 40
minutes, the team was able to channel its grief, shock and confusion on the hardwood, all the
while honoring Quan through its play.
"I can't begin to tell you what it feels like to function without your family," Titans head coach
Marcia Foster said while holding back tears. "We want to do our best as the season goes on to
honor Monica Quan."
Patrick T. Fallon-Los Angeles Times
The Titans played the game against a
backdrop of a story that has gripped the
nation all week. A manhunt for Christopher
Dorner, a former Navy-reservist and LAPD
officer accused of killing Quan, her fiancé
Keith Lawrence and an LAPD officer, wages
on for a fourth day in the snowy Big Bear
Lake mountains, his whereabouts still unknown.
following tragic week Quan's father Randal, a former LAPD captain and lawyer,
represented Dorner in a hearing that ultimately led to his
dismissal from the force. In an online manifesto posted the
day after the murders of Quan and Lawrence, it was
revealed that Randal Quan and members of his family
were some of Dorner's targets.
It has become a twisted saga that seems more like a Hollywood script than real life. While the focus of the story
continues to shift as the details unfold, in Fullerton, the reality is just starting to sink in.
"It doesn't make sense to any of us," Foster said. "She was a rising star and that's what's so hard
about it all. There was so much life for her to live."
Alex Thomas, a junior team captain, felt the depth of the devastating loss during the pregame
moment of silence.
"Not being able to look down the line and
see her with the other coaches, I know
for me that was really difficult," Thomas
said. "It was harder than I thought. There
were a lot of emotions."
College sports are true, family units.
Athletes reach beyond their respective
teams and study together, hang out
together and most importantly look out
for one another. A team is only a more nuclear family tree. Players spend most of their time
outside of class with their teammates and coaches — practicing, traveling, watching film and even
eating their meals together.
Assistant coaches often take on the role of older siblings. Quan was no different.
"She's someone we all looked up to," Thomas said. "It's nice because she was so young. She was
someone that we could talk to and go to, we could talk about things other than basketball. ...
Several Cal State Fullerton athletes were in attendance at Saturday's game, with the men's basketball team even staying for the first half before having to board a bus to their evening game at Riverside

How The Rock Has Made the WWE World
Heavyweight Title More Important Than Ever
By David Levin
(Featured Columnist) on February 10, 2013
The WWE may have the WWE champion it wants in The Rock, but it does not have as many
luxuries with its current title holder as it may like. Because of scheduling, movie premieres and
what I still think is a bad decision to have the current movie star wear the gold around his waist,
this is a different title reign for the "People's Champion."
And in doing what the WWE has done, making The Rock the company centerpiece for now, the
World Heavyweight Title has become more
important to the success of the company.
Current champion Alberto Del Rio is the
perfect title holder to carry the strap heading
into WrestleMania 29.
The Rock and the WWE Title were absent
from Raw last Monday night, killing some of
his momentum moving toward the Elimination
Chamber pay-per-view on February 17.
Because the idea of putting the title on a
part-time wrestler is risky at best, the need for “
The Great One" to be on camera each week
is crucial to the success of this WWE foray.
The fact the WWE Title is MIA at times makes
the title held by Ric Flair, Harley Race, Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat "the" title in the
company right now.
No, I am not exaggerating, just stating a fact.
When the WWE relied on branding to establish competition within the company, the WWE Title was
"the" title to win and the World Title sat on SmackDown as the redheaded stepchild. Don't get me
wrong, Randy Orton, Christian and Mark Henry are top talent and defended the belt admirably, but
when it came to reality, the WWE Title carried more weight.
I'm not so sure that is the case anymore.
What the WWE has done is choose a quick fix (putting the strap on The Rock) to help with ratings
and a build toward WrestleMania 29. The fallback to that is what happens when the event is over
and done with, and The Rock returns to the rock star lifestyle of Hollywood? He has charisma and
excitement and catch phrase after catch phrase, but it ends at some point, and fans and wrestlers
get complacent with it.
There are plenty of WWE superstars who could challenge for that belt. CM Punk is in a holding
pattern. Vince McMahon is on the shelf after hip surgery. What is the WWE to do?
Most likely nothing.
And while we wait for something to happen, where we see The Rock in the ring week after week,
the WHC and the feud between Alberto Del Rio and The Big Show has become the best thing
going today.
Yes, I guess it's true about how much The Rock is needed by the WWE, only this time, his
presence is helping others and not himself.

RAVEN WIN Super Bowl 2013: Joe Flacco, Ray Lewis and Ravens hold on to beat
49ers, 34-31
When the lights came back to the Superdome, America’s biggest sporting event had changed. This was the story line that no one predicted, a dose of unexpected drama that no one wanted. Super Bowl XLVII stopped for nearly 35 minutes because of a power outage, and while the Baltimore Ravens tried to protect an enormous lead, the San Francisco 49ers somehow were recharged.
No, the lasting memory from this game will not be that John Harbaugh defeated his younger brother, Jim, or that Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis ended his
career with a championship. It’ll be that Baltimore survived an unexplainable collapse — defeating the 49ers, 34-31 — by leaning on its most dependable presence, quarterback Joe Flacco. “We don’t make anything easy,” said Flacco, who was named the Super Bowl’s most valuable player after his 287-yard passing performance. Let it be said now — and more than that embraced — that Flacco is one of the game’s best. He was, anyway, during these playoffs — the most challenging and legacy-defining period in a player’s career.
THE SUPERBRO This wasn’t a showcase game of a fifth-year player who simply rode his team’s wave to the Vince Lombardi trophy. Flacco improved his mechanics and response to pressure, and he was at his best during the postseason. Eleven touchdowns this postseason and zero interceptions. The only other quarterbacks to pass for that many touchdowns in a single postseason were Joe Montana and Kurt Warner. Still, Flacco didn’t do this alone, but he became the face of the team that’s now the face of the NFL. Baltimore’s defense
is still considered among the league’s most formidable units, and running back Ray Rice shook off a second-half fumble to help his team protect a lead that was dissolving by the minute. Flacco is his team’s most recognizable survivor, and this is true now of his career. Drafted in the first round in 2008, he heard for years that he wasn’t among the league’s elite passers. The Ravens haven’t yet signed him to a contract extension, though it was assumed he would be back in Baltimore. Now, though, the team’s gamble has likely cost it money; even if few are willing to admit that Flacco is a top-tier quarterback, he almost certainly will be paid like it this offseason. “Joe has been so huge for us all year and especially the postseason,” Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta said. “Nobody deserves this more than him in this organization.”
In this game, Flacco watched as San Francisco’s second-year quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, sidestepped his own stress and shortcomings, pushing his team to a remarkable comeback that’ll be discussed for years. “They handled that better than we did,” John Harbaugh said of the 49ers. “The momentum turned, and they handled it well.” When the electricity went off early in the third quarter — a Superdome spokesman apologized for the delay, but the league issued no reason for it — the 49ers trailed the Ravens by 22 points. Jacoby Jones began the second half with a 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. But by the time the fourth quarter began, Kaepernick and his team had chipped the lead to five. Then, as the minutes ticked away, to two. Story by: By Kent Babb
From Larry Brown Sports: Michael Jordan may be turning 50 next week, but current NBA player Antawn
Jamison thinks the legend could still be a
solid contributor in the league.
Jordan hasn‟t played in the NBA since retiring
following the 2003 season when he was 40.
Jordan retired from the game two previous
times — once to attempt a professional
baseball career, and the other time after
winning his sixth NBA championship following
the 1998 season.
During his 2009 Hall of Fame induction
speech, Jordan threw out the possibility of
making a comeback at 50.
“One day you might look up and see me
playing the game at 50. Oh, don‟t laugh. Never say never. Because limits, like fears,
are often just an illusion.”
Jamison, who played college ball at North Carolina like Jordan and is now with the
Los Angeles Lakers, believes MJ could still play in the NBA.
“I wouldn‟t doubt that in the right situation with a LeBron (James) on his team or with
a Kobe (Bryant) on this team, he could get you about 10 or 11 points, come in and
play 15-20 minutes,” Jamison told ESPN LA‟s Dave McMenamin Friday. “I wouldn‟t
doubt that at all, especially if he was in shape and injuries were prevented and
things of that nature.”
Jamison also says Jordan wasn‟t joking about possibly returning to the NBA at 50.
“He wasn‟t joking,” said Jamison of Jordan‟s Hall of Fame speech. “You hear stories
still to this day, especially last year, him going to the practice facility and playing 1-
on-1 with the guys and still they can‟t stop him.”
Jamison‟s words shouldn‟t come as a surprise. In December, Jordan, who is a
majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, worked out with his players. Both Gerald
Henderson and Bismack Biyombo said Jordan could still play in the league.
Jordan would have to get in much better shape to think about a comeback, but it
would be worthwhile just so we could see this moment recreated in real life.
Michael Jordan could still contribute in NBA at 50
LeBron knows Kobe is same old scorer
A new Kobe Bryant supposedly has emerged in
recent weeks for the Los Angeles Lakers. But
not for LeBron James.
He believes he‟s the same old Kobe.
James, the Miami Heat star, couldn't care less
that the Lakers star recently had a run of 39
assists in three games and 56 over five. He‟s
doesn‟t buy that Bryant all of a sudden has
become a facilitator.
“Do I buy that? No,‟‟ James said. “He told you
all before, he‟s a scorer. He said it every day,
„I‟m a scorer and this is what I do.‟ So I don‟t
buy it. No. You guys (the media) buy it, though. I
see how you all go, '(48) assists in four games,'
whatever. You guys are going crazy about that. I
don‟t buy that. He‟s a scorer.‟‟
So James won‟t be expecting the Lakers
shooting guard to be dishing off too much when
he runs into him Sunday at American Airlines
Arena. Indeed, Bryant‟s passing has fallen off in
the past week after his five-game streak of
averaging 11.2 a game ended Feb. 1. Since
then, Bryant has averaged 4.3 assists in four
games.
Nevertheless, the Lakers (24-27) have been
winning as they try to dig themselves out of a
huge hole and make the playoffs. They arrived
in Miami having won seven of their past nine
and four of five.
Even though the Lakers recently lost forward
Pau Gasol for at least six weeks due to a foot
injury, they still have Bryant, who is averaging
27.4 points and 5.3 assists, Dwight Howard and
Steve Nash
Dennis Rodman Releases Children’s Book ‘Dennis the Wild
Bull’ to Preach Acceptance
Dennis Rodman„s children‟s book has
been released, and it‟s as great as we
expected — at least if we can judge the
book by its cover.
Dennis the Wild Bull, which Rodman
wrote earlier this year as part of an effort
to spread acceptance and teach children
good lessons, is now on sale. A Rodman-
like red bull, complete with flowing red
hair, nose rings and a tattoo, is on the
cover.
“They‟ll see me, literally see me,”
Rodman told The Associated Press.
“They‟ll say, „Wow, this is just like him.‟”
The story centers around Dennis the bull,
who is taken from his family and has to
live with other bulls in a rodeo. He
doesn‟t look like the other bulls, but they
become friends.
“More than anything, I just want little kids
today just to understand: Ain‟t no matter
what you do in life — be different, rich or
poor, man — guess what? It‟s OK to be
who you are pretty much, and you‟ll be
accepted,” Rodman said. “… For a guy
like me to be very eccentric, to even go
to extremes to write a children‟s book
with all the wild things I do and make it
believable, was pretty much incredible.”
Rodman said he drew from his — ahem
— varying life experiences and the
obstacles he had to overcome as a child
to write the story.
As strange as Rodman‟s path has been,
it sounds like an entertaining tale. And
you can‟t beat that bull drawing on the
cover.
The discussions over the increasing number of football head injuries are sprouting up
everywhere from Pop Warner fields, high school gyms, the NFL Commissioner's
office and all the way up the the White House.
Suggestions on how to stem the tide of
serious, long-lasting health concerns
have included everything from
upgrading equipment, limiting what
constitutes a legal tackle and/or fining
and suspending players for flagrant hits.
Now one New York politician wants to take it one step further and has quietly
introduced legislation to prohibit children younger than 11 from playing organized
tackle football anywhere in the state, according to The New York Daily News.
"I want to protect the children," said Bronx Assemblyman Michael Benedetto. "I want
them to get an appreciation of the game but I also don't want them to come out of
this wonderful sport in a damaged condition."
Benedetto's push to ban the sport for children is the first such proposal in the nation.
President Obama recently publicized the debate over kids playing football when he
said he would think twice about allowing a son, if he had one, to play football.
And a newly-released book by Dr. Robert Cantu, a Boston neurosurgeon, urged kids
under 14 to avoid the sport altogether.
Benedetto agrees with the doctor's assertion that big hits on little children could be
hazardous to their health in the future.
"I think the evidence is now out there that kind of warrants another look at youth
activities," he said Friday.
NY politician pushes to ban pee
Youth football officials have debunked Benedetto's bill as an overreaction to a few
high-profile incidents involving college and pro players.
"This is absolutely the first we have heard of
any state doing something like this," said John
Button, executive director of Pop Warner
Football. "Frankly, it is disturbing."
More than 250,000 children — some as young
as 5 — play tackle football in Pop Warner
leagues across the country. Benedetto said it's
too early to tell whether the bill will pass the
Assembly this session and is still looking for a
sponsor to take it to the State Senate.
State Sen. Martin Golden gave the proposal
little chance of success in the conservative Senate.
"Somebody always wants to regulate something," he said. "And regulating 6 and 7-
year-olds playing football is not the place to do it."
Still. Where's there's smoke, there's fire — especially with the blades of the
helicopter-parent society of today fanning the flames.

Story by Golf Week Sean Martin
Brandt Snedeker‟s incredible start to the 2013 PGA Tour season continued with a
victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He shot 19-under-par 267 (66-
68-68-65) to win by two shots.
Here are Five Things to take away from the Pebble Beach Golf Links:
1. Unbeatable Brandt
Snedeker, the reigning FedEx Cup champion, moved to No. 4 in the Official World
Golf Ranking, but no one can compare to him thus far this season.
The Pebble Beach victory was his fourth top-three finish in five starts this year. He
was runner-up in his two more recent events (behind Tiger Woods and Phil
Mickelson) and third in his season debut at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
"Feels great to finish one," he said. "The last two weeks, playing great but running
into two Hall of Famers, really motivated me to go out and prove that I can handle
the lead."
Snedeker started the final round in a tie for the lead. He then played the first seven
holes in 5 under, including an eagle at the par-5 second hole. He had a two-shot lead
at the turn after three-putting from 22 feet for his only bogey, but responded with
birdies at the next two holes to grow his lead to four. He made a 27-footer on No. 10
and followed with a 16-foot birdie putt at the 11th. He parred the next five holes
before making a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th and parring No. 18.
Snedeker lived up to his billing as one of the PGA Tour‟s best putters. He made four
birdie putts outside 10 feet Sunday.
It was Snedeker‟s fifth career victory.
Max Pacioretty claims Mikhail Grabovski bit him
Written by Laura Astorian on Sunday, 10 February 2013 04:56.
It's no secret that the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens do not get along. It's also no secret that teams get chippy during one-sided blowouts, as the game between the two teams on Saturday night demonstrated in clear fashion. In a
melee along the boards at about 11:30 into the third period, Max Pacioretty decided to put Mikhail Grabovski into a headlock. Fair enough. That happens all of the time in fights. However, the headlock happened to involve Pacioretty's un-gloved hand and forearm being draped right in front of Grabovski's mouth. Obviously, if you're silly enough to put bare skin practically into someone's mouth during a scrum, then you're inviting someone to -- on purpose or not -- take a taste. It's not clear from the video that Grabovski did in fact chomp down, but Pacioretty's making that face for a reason. First off, biting is gross. Secondly, don't put body parts inside of someone's mouth and not expect this to happen. There's not really conclusive proof, so I'd be surprised if discipline czar Brendan Shanahan doles out punishment. As it stands, it's just another embarrassing aspect of a terrible loss by Montreal.
Beckham had double for his rear in underwear ad
While the interwebs were abuzz over
the latest H&M ad featuring David
Beckham showing off his assets,
some Debbie Downer felt the need to
reveal something shocking.
Apparently, according to the Today
Show, H&M used a body double for
some parts of the video shoot. Then
H&M actually confirmed it:
"David was very involved in the
advert, including doing most of the
stunts. Due to his tight schedule, a
body double was used in smaller
parts of the video."
Is that PR-speak for "his butt isn't
tight enough?" Is Beckham's body
not perfect enough for H&M? I know
body doubles are used in movies all
the time, but this man is a
professional athlete. If even HIS
body isn't cutting it for H&M in
"smaller parts" of the video, what
hope do the rest of us have?
Victoria's Secret does the same
thing, and maybe it is just a reality
we need to expect. In advertising, we
always see products in their best-
case scenario, which is probably why
H&M chose to use Beckham to hock
their underwear to begin with.
It's not surprising that H&M would
want to use the best male body they
could, but when even Beckham isn't
good enough, it makes me worry.
Live condor escapes handler,
causes chaos before ECHL game
It’s days like this that you can feel safe the Bruins don’t actually have
a live bear for a mascot. The Bakersfield Condors brought a
live condor to the team’s latest game against the Las Vegas
Wranglers, and things quickly got out of hand. Almost immediately
after the condor was removed from its cage, the bird began
struggling with its handler. After breaking free during the national anthem, it was corralled by the handler, only to slip free again
when the poor guy wiped out on the ice.
The condor then made a break for it, invading the Bakersfield bench and briefly terrorizing the players and coach before heading down the tunnel and, presumably, to
freedom.
The Cleveland Indians have signed first baseman-designated hitter Jason Giambi to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The Indians announced the signing Saturday, six days ahead of
the team's first full-squad workout.
The 42-year-old Giambi spent the past three-plus seasons filling a
part-time role with the Rockies. The 2000 AL MVP was a mentor to
younger players and he interviewed for Colorado's managerial
position this offseason.
Giambi could become the Indians' DH, a role filled by veterans Jim
Thome and Travis Hafner in recent years.
A five-time All-Star, Giambi has 429 homers - just one in 89 at-bats for Colorado last
year - 1405 RBIs and a .280 average in 18 big league seasons with Oakland, the
Yankees and Rockies. Known for his patience at the plate, Giambi has a career on-
base percentage of .403.
The words “pending a physical” give pause to any baseball player on the verge of
signing a contract. The latest, reportedly, is Mariners ace right-hander
Felix Hernandez.
Hernandez last week agreed to a seven-year, $175 million contract
with the M‟s, according to major-league sources.
However, the deal is not yet official, and ESPN.com reported Sunday
that an issue with Hernandez‟s elbow is a concern for the club.
Hernandez has two years remaining on his current deal, so neither
side is necessarily in a rush to resolve the matter.
“There are many issues to be worked out,” one source in Hernandez‟s camp said.
“We are not in a hurry.”
The reported elbow issue apparently surfaced during a physical that Hernandez took
as a condition of the new deal. Hernandez did undergo a physical Thursday, a major-
league source confirmed.
Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik, without commenting on Hernandez‟s
elbow, said in an email Sunday that the pitcher was on his way to the team‟s training
facility in Peoria, Ariz.
