Please join us in welcoming Professor Oscar Vilhena Vieira to
the University of Miami and Florida International University
February 24 -28, 2014 for a week of public lectures, class
professorships, roundtable discussions, and more.
The Latin American Visiting Professor of Law is a bi-annual
initiative of the Miami Consortium, inviting distinguished faculty
from Latin America to enrich the instruction of Latin American
and
inter-American law in Miami. This initiative is supported by the
UM School of Law and FIU College of Law.
A Week with Oscar Vilhena Vieira Distinguished 2014 Latin
American Visiting Professor of Law
Professor Oscar Vilhena Vieira is Dean of the School of Law of
the
Getulio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo, Brazil. His expertise
is
in Constitutional Law, Human Rights, and Law and
Development. Dean Vilhena served as legal advisor and
executive secretary at prominent institutions in Latin
America and is currently an active lawyer in several human
rights cases at the Brazilian Supreme Court.

CLAS PREPARES FOR PROFESSOR OSCAR VILHENA VIEIRA, DEAN OF LAW AT
FUNDAÇÃO GETULIO VARGAS
As part of its ongoing commitment to promote international and
area studies education at UM, CLAS will be hosting Professor Oscar
Vilhena Vieira as its 2014 Distinguished Latin American Visiting
Professor of Law. Oscar Vilhena Vieira is the Dean of the School of
Law of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV/SP), where he teaches
Constitutional Law, Human Rights, and Law and Development. He will
be visiting Miami during the week of February 24-28, 2014 for a
week of classroom instruction, public lectures, roundtable
discussions, and meetings with faculty and students. Dean Vilhena
has a B.A. in law from the Catholic University of São Paulo; a
LL.M. from Columbia University in New York; a M.A. and Ph.D. in
political science from the University of São Paulo, and completed
his post-doctoral studies at the Centre for Brazilian Studies at
Oxford University. Oscar Vilhena Vieira was legal adviser for the
Center for the Studies of Violence of the University of São Paulo
(1990-1996) and executive secretary of the Teotonio Vilela
Commission for Human Rights (1989-1991). He served as state
attorney for São Paulo (1993-2003) and as executive secretary of
the United Nations Latin American Institute in Brazil (1997-2002).
In 2000 he founded and directed Conectas Human Rights and the Pro
Bono Institute. He has written several books and academic articles
on constitutional law, human rights, and law and development. Oscar
is a member of several civil society organizations and academic
programs advisory boards, including OSI - Human Rights board, Pro
Bono Institute, ANDI (National Agency for the Rights of Children),
and the Law Schools Global League (co-president). Oscar Vieira has
also been an active pro bono lawyer in several human rights cases
at the Brazilian Supreme Court. The Latin American Visiting
Professor of Law is a bi-annual initiative of CLAS as part of the
Miami Consortium (MC) for the study of Latin America and the
Caribbean. Under this initiative, CLAS and the MC invite one
distinguished professor of law from Latin America with the view of
enriching instructional quality and content of Latin American and
inter-American law at UM and FIU. This initiative is also supported
by UM School of Law and FIU College of Law. For additional

Oscar Vilhena Vieira is the Dean of the São Paulo Law School of
