The palace located on the banks of the Moika River and is one of 57 palaces in Russia, four of which are in St.Petersburg and were owned by Felix Yusupov – often said to be almost as wealthy as the Tsar himself. Thispalace was Yusupov’s favorite and exemplifies his wealth and eccentric style. Among the palace's treasures areFrench tapestries and porcelain, Venetian mirrors and woodcarvings. It was here in 1916 that the notoriousGrigory Rasputin was assassinated. The tour will take you through the rooms of the palace and you’ll see the veryplace where Felix Yusupov and his accomplices assassinated Grigory Rasputin. This marvelous old Russianstyle church was built on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated onMarch 1, 1881. Built in 18831907, the church was designed in the spirit of 16th and 17th century Russianarchitecture, inspired particularly by St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, Moscow. With its distinctive cupolas,the Muscovy design is unique to St. Petersburg and provides a dramatic contrast to the NeoClassicalarchitecture which dominates the city center. The interior of the church, a memorial to the late Emperor AlexanderII, is decorated with different marbles and several thousand square yards of mosaics. The Cathedral ofResurrection, as it is also called, is the only surviving monument to Alexander II in the city.

The State Hermitage is a museum of art and culture, one of the largest and oldest in the world. It was founded byCatherine the Great in 1764. Its collections, of which only a small part is on the permanent display, comprisenearly three million items. Today the Hermitage museum encompasses buildings on the Palace Embankment andits neighborhoods. The Hermitage Museum occupies the Winter Palace – the winter residence of the RussianTsars, and four more buildings: the Little Hermitage – Catherine’s original collection – the Old Hermitage; theHermitage Theater – Catherine’s private theater – and the New Hermitage. In her lifetime Catherine's acquired paintings from old masters, books, engraved gems, drawings, coins and



medals and a natural history collection. Later Russian emperors continued to expand the collection and in 1852the Hermitage was opened to the public. Immediately after the Revolution of 1917 the Imperial Hermitage and theWinter Palace were proclaimed state museums. The range of the Hermitage exhibits was further expanded whenprivate art collections from several palaces of the Russian Tsars and numerous private mansions were beingnationalized.

The 50 minute drive to the Tsar’s Village in Pushkin will take you through Moscow Prospect, then on the KievHighway to the Egyptian Gates, the entrance to the Tsar’s Village. Catherine’s favorite palace is without a doubtone of the masterpieces of world art. Peter the Great presented this estate to his wife Catherine in 1710, and on ita small palace was built by the architect Braunstein. From this time until the time of the last Russian Tsar, it wasused as the summer residence of the Royal Family. In 1756, it was expanded in the Baroque style.

The palace contains a series of magnificent rooms, including the famous Picture Gallery and, of course, the GreatHall and the famous Amber Room. The parks of the estate add to the splendor of the palace and several have anumber of charming pavilions. Among them are the Grotto Pavilion and the Hermitage. The town of Pushkin isknown not only for its remarkable palace and parks, but for the man it was named after. Since 1937, it has beennamed after Alexander Pushkin, the most celebrated poet in the country.

This tour offers you an exciting opportunity to view St. Petersburg from a completely different angle. You’ll see thecity from the water surrounding its numerous squares, monuments and palaces. Your coach will bring you to thepier in the city center, where you’ll start your fascinating journey through the rivers and canals of the ‘Venice ofthe North.’ The exact route of your trip will depend on the boat size and traffic conditions of the waterways.

Your river cruise will end in the city center and your bus will take you to the Cathedral of Spilled Blood Cathedralto tour this remarkable building. The cathedral was built in 1907 on the spot where the Russian Tsar Alexander IIwas assassinated in 1881. In a strikingly original way, the architect Parland incorporated all the features of oldRussian churches, embellishing it in exuberant style with ornate decorations loosely modeled on St. Basil’sCathedral in Moscow. The area covered by mosaics is about 23,000 square feet, believed to be the largest indoormosaic work in the world. The best painters, masters of mosaic stone carving, ceramic and enamel of the 19th20th centuries, took part in the decoration of the church.

An outstanding feature of the interior decor is a variety of Italian colored marble and Russian semipreciousstones. Restoration of the church started in 1974. It was a very painstaking process. The restorers employed onlythe same type of materials and technology used when the cathedral was built, including 30 kinds of rare marble



and about 100 types of precious stones. In August of 1997 the Cathedral of the Savior on Spilled Blood wasopened to the public in all its original extraordinary appearance. You'll also have some free time for shopping onthis tour.

You’ll visit the metro’s stunning stations, intended by Stalin to be the palaces for thepeople. The best Soviet architects were employed to design St. Petersburg’s metro stations. Thousands of tonsof marble, granite and limestone were used to face the walls, and sculptures, mosaics and chandeliers werecommissioned from leading artists. The first line, opened in 1955, is the most fascinating.

You’ll be shown a few stations on this line and take a short ride on the train. A peek at St. Petersburg’s marketsand food stores provides an intriguing insight into local life. Many locals shop for food in the food markets whichsell fruits, vegetables, fresh meat and fish, delicious homemade cottage cheese and wonderful natural honey.Sellers in the markets come from all over the former Soviet Union and one can witness quite a variety ofnationalities there and enjoy friendly attitudes. You’ll be treated to a variety of vodkas and traditional Russiancondiments served to compliment this famous Russian drink. After the vodka sampling, you’ll be shown to yourcoach for the return transfer to your ship.

For those of you, whose main interest in Peterhof is the beauty of its magnificent gardens and fountains, you’ll



find this to be the perfect tour as they will be the sole focus of this outing. Peterhof, the town of palaces,fountains and parks, was built by Peter the Great to rival Versailles and a great part of the work was focused onthe lavish gardens. The estate construction spanned two centuries and upon its completion it encompassed sevenparks and more than 20 smaller palaces and pavilions. Peter himself designed the layout of the 300 acre park andspectacular fountains, 144 in total, all operating without the use of pumps by a combination of naturally generatedwater pressure and magic.

The Upper Park has as its centerpiece the Neptune Fountain, ending up here after Paul I bought it during one ofhis shopping trips to Germany. The Lower Park where you find the famous Grand Cascade – often considered thechief delight of the grounds – consists of three waterfalls, an avenue of 64 fountains and 37 gilded statues.Samson, constructed in 17341735 and the main attraction of Peterhof, is located at the base of the GreatCascade. A hydrofoil will arrive at the pier located in the Low Park to whisk you back to the city while you havethe great opportunity so see the city from the perspective of the Gulf of Finland.

Travel to the city center and be introduced to the history of St. Petersburg. Your first stop is at the Cathedral ofSt. Peter and Paul. The Peter and Paul Fortress was founded in 1703 and is considered to be the birth place ofSt. Petersburg. The cathedral, designed by Trezini is a distinctive, majestic landmark and known to be the burialground for many members of the Romanov Royal family.

From the fortress you’ll head towards the Church on the Spilled Blood, built in memory of Alexander the II on thespot where he was assassinated. Inside is a collection of mosaics that covers over 8,400 square yards withjeweler's enamel. Your last stop is at St. Isaac's Square. The St. Isaac's Cathedral, built between 1818 and 1858,is the largest church in St. Petersburg with the capacity of 10,000 people.
