1 OUR FAVORITE THINGS: Girls’ Night Out A NOTE FROM WCU PRESIDENT, WENDY STIPPICH Welcome to the concluding concert of our 2017-2018 season, Our Favorite Things. Tonight, we celebrate women composers with modern selections, as well as, historical classics. I would like to personally thank you for your continued support of our mission to bring beautiful music to the patrons and community of Waukesha and its surrounding areas. This season has been truly enchanting - from our season opener, “Simple Gifts…A Collaboration, where we partnered with New Berlin Eisnehower’s A Capella Choir and the Lake Country Children’s Choir, to “A Choral Union Christmas” that bought the time-honored tradition of Christmas music to life, and then our free community concert “Handel’s Messiah” bringing this beautiful piece to our most highly attended concert of the season. Rounding out our season with our “Girls Night Out!” concert is the perfect conclusion. Partnering with other non-profits has proven to be a win-win for our community, as this year we gained more awareness from the Wisconsin Parkinson Association and NAMI of Waukesha. Fittingly, our non-profit partner for “Girls Night Out!” is The Women’s Center in Waukesha. The Women’s Center’s mission is to provide safety, shelter and support to empower all impacted by domestic abuse, sexual violence, child abuse and trafficking. A portion of our ticket proceeds will be donated to this worthy organization. Thank you for your partnership! Director Michael Chapel is busy creating our theme and choosing repertoire for our 2018-2019 Season. You’ll get a sneak peek by visiting our website, www.choralunion. org, in August! We’ll make our Season Tickets available at that time, always the most economical way for you and your family to enjoy our wonderful performances! We hope you have enjoyed Our Favorite Things as much as we have appreciated your support. Our upcoming 2018-2019 season will begin after we’ve all enjoyed a spectacular Wisconsin summer. We hope to see in the fall. The Waukesha Choral Union can trace its roots as Waukesha’s premier choral society back to 1949 at Carroll University. Over the years, under various names and outstanding artistic directors, WCU has developed a reputation for excellent choral music performances in SE Wisconsin. Adhering to our educational mission, we have collaborated with Carroll University choirs, with music groups from Waukesha South, Waukesha North, Kettle Moraine, Muskego, Hartford Union, and New Berlin Eisenhower High Schools, and with the Waukesha Children’s and the Lake Country Children’s Choirs. We’re proud to have shared the stage with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Choristers, Jubilate Chorale, and Bel Canto Chorus. In 2016 we achieved our dream of singing the National Anthem at Miller Park. Our potential is endless!

MISS ION

The Waukesha Choral Union will challenge, enrich, and engage its singing members, audiences, and community through the pursuit of excellence and a variety of programming. The WCU mission includes expansion of the effectiveness of its educational efforts throughout Waukesha County through collaboration with schools, area performing artists, and community arts organizations.

ABOUT THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

Michael Chapel is the choir specialist at Brown Deer Middle/High School, where he directs nine different ensembles including: three

middle school choirs, five high school choirs and a hand bell ensemble. He is also the musical theatre director, and is the fine arts event scheduling and performance facilities coordinator for the School District of Brown Deer. Mr. Chapel is currently the

Choir Coordinator for the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) Middle Level Honors Project, and is active as an adjudicator

for solo/ensemble festivals and honors auditions sponsored by the WSMA. Additionally, he is beginning his 20th year as the choir director and lead service accompanist at Parkside Community UCC (formerly St. Peter’s) in Saukville, WI.

Mr. Chapel is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music and a Master’s Degree in Music Education – with an emphasis on choral conducting.

Good evening and welcome to our annual May concert. The Waukesha Choral Union is excited to return to Carroll University. The Humphrey Chapel / Art Center will showcase wonderful acoustics and an intimate setting to share our final concert event of the 2017-18 season: “Girls’ Night Out.”

Tonight we celebrate the music of female composers and arrangers. The nine choral composer/arrangers chosen for this performance demonstrate great diversity among their pieces - but these women are not the only quality female composers (there are so many, we could not possibly fit them all into one evening ). These are but a sampling of the historical, personal, and even locally relevant selections that are in the repertory. More discoveries from the past will emerge and be made available for performance; and there are already a great many wonderful compositions of the present time as well. We hope you enjoy tonight’s program.

As always, thank you for your gracious and continuing support of the arts in your community. We look forward to bringing you another season of high-quality choral music starting back-up in the Fall. If you are not a member yet, watch for that opportunity over the summer months.

WAUKESHA CHORAL UNION presents:

Girls’ Night Out: Music of Female Composers

Saturday, May 5, 2018 – 7:30 PMHumphrey Chapel / Art Center

Carroll University, Waukesha, WI

Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal .........................................Traditional Hymn (tune “Invitation”) arranged by Alice Parker (b.1925)

Alice Parker studied composition and conducting at the Juilliard School where she began her long association with Robert Shaw. This famous arrangement was originally written

for the Robert Shaw Chorale, with a strong walking pulse and juxtaposed motives.

O frondens virga..............................................text and music: Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179)(O Branch, Coming into Leaf) edited by William T. Flynn

Hildegard of Bingen’s O frondens virga is one of forty-four antiphons surviving with music in manuscripts connected with Hildegard’s community at Rupertsberg, Germany. The

original was copied by Hildegard and sent to the monks of Villers circa 1175.

To sit and dream ......................................................................................Rosephanye Powell (b.1962)text (from “To You”) by Langston Hughes

Set to the poetry of Langston Hughes, the text addresses “our problem world” with the hope that those who dare to dream can “make our world anew.” The composer sought to capture,in concert form, the jazz influences harmonically

that were such a part of Hughes’ world.

If We Only Have Love ................................................................................Jacques Brel-Sherman-Blau(Quand on n’a Que L’amour) arranged by Paula Foley Tillen (b.1958)

With a quite obvious homage to Gabriel Fauré’s classic choral piece Cantique de Jean Racine, Waukesha-native Paula Foley Tillen crafted this

arrangement (c.2004), incorporating a portion of a Jacques Brel tune, for Dr. Sharon Hansen and the Milwaukee Choral Artists.

Gartenlieder, Op.3 .................................................................................... Fanny Hensel (1805-1847)text by J.V. Eischendorf

1. “Lockung” 2. “Schöne Fremde”

Fanny Hensel (Fanny Mendelssohn, prior to marriage) was the older sister of composer Felix Mendelssohn. She had over 400 piano compositions to her credit, and she also wrote a number of lovely choral works including these two from her

six-song opus Gartenlieder.

Morir non puo il mio core ....................................................... Maddalena Casulana (c.1544-1590)

Casulana was an Italian composer, lutenist and singer during the Renaissance and was one of the first (if not the very first) woman to have her music printed. She is remembered for her madrigals – many of which (60+) were published in

collections throughout her lifetime.

Three Madrigals .........................................................................................Emma Lou Diemer (b. 1962) 1. “O Mistress mine, where are you roaming?” 2. “Take, O take those lips away” 3. “Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more!”

Emma Lou Diemer, who earned her composition degrees (bachelor’s/master’s at Yale and PhD at Eastman) created this set of madrigals that was published in 1962. They are considered among the first modern American madrigals,

each having text taken from a different Shakespeare play.

I will be earth .................................................................................................... Gwyneth Walker (b.1947)Text by May Swenson

I Will Be Earth is a musical setting of a poem by American poet May Swenson who, in her lifetime, published over 450 poems. This musical setting is intended to

present the poem in a simple and straightforward manner which seeks to portray the beauty, humor, and passion of the words.

How Can I Keep From Singing? ........................................................................................Quaker Hymnarranged by Gwyneth Walker (b.1947)

This song is based on a Quaker hymn dating back to the 1800s in the United States. References to the persecution of Friends are heard in the lyrics,

yet faith and courage prevail.

Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye .....................................................................................Traditional Irish Tunearranged by Alice Parker (b.1925)

While many Parker/Shaw settings of choral music form an enduring repertory for choruses all around the world, she wrote hundreds of pieces on her own ranging from

operas through song cycles, cantatas and choral suites, anthems and folksongs.

Non nobis, Domine .................................................................................Rosephanye Powell (b. 1962)

Non nobis, Domine has become one of Rosephanye Powell’s most celebrated works. The driving energy and ostinato rhythms are classic elements used throughout this work.

All Works of Love ...................................................................................................Joan Szymko (b.1957)text by Mother Teresa

“If we have no peace it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.Remember. All works of love are works of peace.”

“Do not wait for the leaders; Do it alone, person to person.”< Mother Teresa of Calcutta >

An Irish Blessing ............................................................................................Traditional Gaelic Blessingarranged by Paula Foley Tillen (b.1958)

There are many arrangements in the repertory that feature these words and the Brown Deer High School Concert Choir performs an arrangement annually at their school’s commencement. Paula Foley Tillen was commissioned to create this

arrangement, for the BDHS class of 2012.

O BRANCH, COMING INTO LEAFO branch, coming into leaf, standing in your nobility, just as dawn advances;now rejoice and be glad, and deem us, helpless ones, worthy;free us from evil habits, and even reach out your handto lift us.

ENTICEMENTDon’t you hear the trees rustling through the stillness outside? Doesn’t it entice you to listen  from the loft to the ground,  where the many brooks flow  so wonderful in the moonlight and the silent castles look into the river from the high rock? Do you still know the sweet songs from the old, beautiful time? They all awaken again at night in the forest’s solitude when the dreaming trees listen and the lilac smells so sweet, and in the river the nymphs listen: “come down; here it’s so cool.”

BEAUTIFUL STRANGERThe treetops rustle and shudder as if held at this hour, around the half-crumpled walls, the old gods were gathering in a circle. Here under the myrtle trees in sweetly dawning splendor, what say you, in confused dreams, to me fantastic night? All the stars sparkle at me, with a glowing loving gaze; the drunken distance speaksof future, great happiness.

MY HEART CANNOT DIEMy heart cannot die: I would like to kill it, since that would please you, but it cannot be pulled out of your breast, where it has been dwelling for a long time; and if I killed it, as I wish, I know that you would die, and I would die too.

NON NOBIS DOMINENot to us, O Lord, not to us,but to your name be the glory.
