SOUTHWARK SEA CADETS WELCOME

3

Welcome

This is my first welcome to our annual review, celebrating another successful year for Training Ship Cossack. I have taken over a strong unit from Lt (SCC) Bradbury RNR, who stood down as Commanding Officer Southwark Sea Cadets earlier this year, after eleven illustrious years. The unit itself is undergoing huge refurbishments and modernisation, a joint venture between the training team led by myself and the management trustees led by their Chairperson. Into our 75th Year, the unit, originally founded during warship week in July 1942, as 2 individual units, “Southwark” and “Walworth” before merging in 1964 to become one unit under the name Southwark. Since 1942 we have achieved amazing things with the young people who have come through our doors, they have gone on to enjoy careers in the Royal and Merchant Navy, become top water sports instructors in their discipline, moved halfway around the world, and some have even gone off to University to enjoy the

student life for a few more years. The one thing each of these young people have in common is that it was Southwark Sea Cadets who gave them a great head start in life. At Training Ship Cossack, we are all proud of those cadets and young people who have gone on to succeed in later life, and we hope that this will continue for many more years to come. We could not however have achieved any of this without the continuing support of our unit sponsors, the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers, The Tallow Chandlers, HMS Cossack Association, and so many more. Thank you to all of you who have contributed to our successes in 2017 and I look forward to celebrating even more success in the coming years.

SOUTHWARK SEA CADETS UNIT REVIEW

Unit Review 2017

I am delighted to announce that Southwark Sea Cadet Unit have been awarded an Efficiency Burgee for 2017. This year saw our score of 85 beating last year by 9 points. This is testament to the hard work and “can do” attitude of the Cadets, Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers and Unit Management Team Trustees attached to Southwark.

District Officers Summary

TS Cossack has, on the whole, had a very good year. The unit has improved in most of the lower scoring areas from last year’s review, specifically on areas A2 and A3. It has been very pleasing to see the staff team at Southwark offering support outside of the unit environment. The unit will want to look at the retention of cadets in the coming review year; although the unit retention is low, the unit’s recruitment and overall numbers are up on last year’s RNP. Once again, Southwark have exceeded the Annual Boating hours target with 98% of the cadets achieving waterborne qualifications. This is a testament to the well planned and executed training schedule for the unit.

The unit now has a date in place of the 1st August for the handover of Command to SLT James Thompson. This will be an exciting time for the Ship’s Company and District look forward to seeing TS Cossack continue to provide an ever evolving cadet experience. District would like to take this opportunity to thank Lt (SCC) David Bradbury RNR for what will be just shy of 11 years Commanding TS Cossack.

Lt Cdr (SCC) G Tolley RNR – District Officer

London Southern District Sea Cadets

Area Officers Summary A well-oiled Unit was on display when I visited to conduct TS Cossacks 2017 Unit Review. The Unit has clearly had a good year and has managed to achieve progression in many areas during the Review period, evidenced by 11 out of the 21 sections recording an increase in score. UR on Westminster is reporting some impressive scores, with 12 of the 21 sections scoring 5 and another 5 sections returning a score of 4, this leaving only 4 sections sitting at 3 or less.

Southwark cadets benefit from a great HQ building which is looked after well with all notices and information being up-to-date. Whilst they are some way from any water, this has not stopped them getting cadets afloat, reflected in their boating hours sitting at 32.28. On visiting the classes, it was clear to see that the cadets are doing well at TS Cossack, all seemed engaged and happy to discuss what they enjoyed most about Sea Cadetting, and indeed what they have planned for the remainder of the year.

The committee support the unit well and seem to have a good handle on unit finances and fundraising. All areas are compliant with all 3 audits achieving the top score of 5.

This year will see a change of OiC for the Unit with Lt Bradbury handing over the reins to S/Lt Thompson on 1st August once he has completed both the JOSC and CTC courses back-to-back in July. This handover signifies an exciting new chapter for Southwark SCU which should be embraced. My thanks must go to Lt Bradbury who has shown nothing but dedication and commitment to Southwark SCU over the last 10+ years as OiC, with many cadets having benefitted directly from his guiding influence. His remaining time must now be spent guiding and training S/Lt Thompson through the handover period, hopefully remaining on hand for the new OiC to call upon into the future.

To summarise, TS Cossack remains a solid Unit offering a great Sea Cadet experience to its cadets, this is testament to the adult team who are pulling in the same direction, BZ’s to you all and keep up the great work.

Impact – making a difference Many externally recognised qualifications have been gained this year by

both Cadets and Adults. This is vitally important for adults as those

qualifications awarded by external governing bodies enable Southwark Sea

SOUTHWARK SEA CADETS IN THE COMMUNITY

November Ceremonies

2017 saw a once in a lifetime opportunity for Able Cadets harry

& Paige, marching down the mall and past the Cenotaph on

Remembrance Sunday with 10,000 veterans, civilian services

and other cadets…

Every year the Sea Cadets attend November Remembrance Ceremonies at the Cenotaph in London but it is passed

around the country to give all cadets the opportunity, this means that it is only once in every 6 years that London

Area and Southwark unit will have this chance.

It wasn’t an easy weekend, they assure us, it was a weekend of public duties for Able Cadets Harry and Paige,

starting with the Lord Mayors Show on Saturday Morning. Up at 5am, to finish all the preparations, departing the

unit by 745am to be on time, and then the long march round the City of London as the new Lord Mayor waves

on…

For Able Cadet Harry, this wasn’t an easy task, at the head of the band and as such head of the Sea Cadet

Contingent too! This year as the Lead Drum Major for the London Area Sea Cadet Band. Able Cadet Paige on the

Military Side Drum and Able Cadet Andrew on the Bass Drum. From, here though, it was a quick change, boots

polished and onto the Mall on Sunday Morning to look their best along with their colleagues from throughout

London Area as the March Past the Cenotaph in an act of remembrance that sees the whole country fall silent.

SOUTHWARK SEA CADETS OUR CADETS & VOLUNTEERS

Our Cadets & Volunteers

Cadet and volunteer numbers are both on a slight increase since last year, although we now have 3 instructors

who are only part time, 2 at University and 1 at Sea with the Merchant Navy. Lt (SCC) Bradbury has now moved

onto a District and Area Role, overseeing BTEC Activity throughout London Area, a role that we wish him the best

of luck in.

Without a committed team of adult volunteers, all of the work we do would just not be possible, they all dedicate

much of their spare time to improving the lives of the next generation, giving them, a great head start in life

through nautical adventure and fun! Do you have what it takes to inspire young people? Can you donate 2 hours a

week to supporting young people?

• SOUTHWARK SEA CADETS OUR SUPPORTERS

Our Supporters – Thank You

Every year we receive incredible support from individuals, trusts and

foundations, corporate partners, volunteers and members, enabling us to

keep doing what we’re doing. While there are too many to list here, please

accept our thanks for your continued support. We are extremely grateful for

the time you volunteer and the funds you donate which are both vital to us.

Throughout 2017 we have again received the support of many benefactors including;

The Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers.

The Tallow Chandlers Company.

HMS Cossack Association

Jack Petchey Foundation

Marine Society and Sea Cadets

Baxter and Grimshaw Trust

Square Rigger Club Charity

RNVR Sail Training Trust

Lend Lease Ltd

But as well as the very kind support of the benefactors listed above there have been many many more,

with donations in kind of items that we would have instead had to purchase. Such items are an immense

help as we save the cost that the purchase of said items would have incurred.

For general running costs we continue to organise our Flag Week, Flag Day and Station Collections as

well as receiving support from local organisations. With a small band of trustees working behind the

scenes, this is becoming increasingly difficult for us, and we do require new blood to assist. If you are

available to assist either on an ongoing basis or an ad hoc basis, please email us. We would be

delighted to welcome you onboard.

To all of our supporters, we wish you a prosperous 2018 and thank you again for your assistance in

2017.
