The IBM BladeCenter chassis covered in this guide are those that are currently marketed in North America. The intent of this guide is to provide power information for installation planning of IBM BladeCenter. This guide is best used in softcopy form since it contains hyperlinks for navigation. This document can still be used in hardcopy as reference only. You can obtain the latest copy of this document by sending an email to [email protected] (put “Latest BC Power Guide for NA” in the subject line).
How to Use This Guide
The “IBM BladeCenter Quick View” section provides links to the various chassis in addition to overview information. Power connections to the IBM BladeCenter chassis must be wired to comply with local and/or national electrical codes. Consult your local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) to ensure compliance. Important Notice: All wiring examples provided in this document are based on nameplate label ratings for the systems. IBM BladeCenter chassis are designed with separate, isolated power domains. Throughout this document, power domains are color coded. Here is an example of the power domain color coding: Blue Indicates Power Domain One Brown/Burgundy Indicates Power Domain Two

IBM BC-HT DC Terminal Block Wiring
Connection and disconnection of the IBM BC-HT from DC source must be done by a qualified electrician. Each dc terminal has four #M6 (0.25-inch) studs, one for -48 V dc, one for RETURN (RTN), and two for connecting the safety ground wire (GND). See page 14 in the “IBM BladeCenter HT Type 8740 and 8750 Installation and User's Guide” for further details on connecting DC power to the IBM BC-HT.
In addition to the examples shown in this section, combinations from “One IBM BC-HT Power Configurations” section can also be used to create IBM BC-HT configurations with two chassis.

Humidity: 8% to 80%
Air temperature:
On:
Altitude: 0 to 914 m (3000 ft) - 10° to 35°C (50° to 95°F)
Altitude: 914 m to 2134 m (3000 ft to 7000 ft) - 10° to 32°C (50° to 89.6°F) Off: -40° to 60°C (-40° to 140°F).
IBM BC-T Power Data
The IBM BC-T has four power modules (PM) that can be powered by AC or DC, depending on the model purchased. The AC model has one IEC320 C14 connector for each PM. The DC model has one terminal block for every two PMs.
AC Model (8720) DC Model (8730)
PM Max Input Amps 8.0A (AC) 44A (DC)
PM Input Voltage 200-240V (AC) -38V to -75V (DC)
PM Max Output Watts 1300W (DC) 1300W (DC)
Chassis Max Input Amps 32A (AC) 70A (DC) Per Terminal Block
See IBM BC-T installation manual for details on connecting power: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/bladectr/documentation/topic/com.ibm.bladecenter.8730.doc/8720_8730_installation_guide.pdf

Basic Power Management (Non-redundant Mode) o Highest available power per Domain. o Possible power loss to some or all blades in the event of a power fault.
Power Module Redundancy (Fully Redundant Mode) o No throttling will occur, even if a power supply fails. o Blades allowed to power on are limited by capacity of one power module per Domain
Power Module Redundancy with Blade Throttling Allowed (Fully Redundant Mode With Throttling) o All Blades will be powered on. o Possible power loss to some or all blades in the event of a power fault and blades cannot be
throttled below the available power limit. Additional Power Policies for IBM BladeCenter S
AC Power Source Redundancy o Chassis powered from two separate sources (circuits)
AC Power Source Redundancy with Blade Throttling Allowed o Chassis powered from two separate sources (circuits) with throttling
