Giving customers Choice. Choice of Chassis/Blades and Interconnects. 5 types of Chassis. Blades from Intel, AMD, Power and Cell. Any chassis any Blade. and then pick the combination of adapter and switch. Gives the most flexible solution Right from Chassis, Server and IO. 5 types of fabric: Ethernet – Cisco/BNT FC – Brocade, Qlogic, Cisco, Emulex Infiniband – Voltaire, Mellanox SAS – LSI iSCSI
So how does it work? Let us go through the high level steps: Step 1: Each Virtual Fabric adapter can offer up to 8 virtual ports. So imagine if you have specific network settings for different departments in your organization and want to allocate dedicated bandwidth (anything between 100Mb and 10Gb). You also want data segregation for security. You can create specific port groups on the switch Step2: Map each of the virtual adapters to port groups on the switch as if each virtual group has its own dedicated adapter of flexible bandwidth. Step3: If your solution requires Fibre channel ports also, you can upgrade both the switch and adapter via optional FCoE SW upgrade and convert few of the virtual adapters as virtual CNAs. This optional FCoE upgrade for the Virtual Fabric adapter will be available 1Q10 via optional software license key. Step4: BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager will offer the management and failover capabilities for both the virtual and physical ports. This capability will be available 1Q10. Clients also have CLI and the switch interface option to manage the Virtual Fabric solution. This will be available at GA.

Even when you don’t fill the rack completely with BladeCenter, you will always be better off with blades because they use those items that typically limit the installation’s density. For most of you, power and cooling run out before U space does. For some, the capabilities to deliver air is the limiting factor. Yet others have floor weight issues. No matter which it is, BladeCenter will use these precious resources smarter than 1U or other blades. In our example we look at the power from our engineering test. The Dell servers each draw 427W. The BladeCenter blades consumed 270W. This example has racks designed to hold no more than 10KW of power. Simple division tells us that Dell can only fit 23 servers into this envelope. IBM blades are more efficient allowing us to put in 37 blades with no additional power or heat consumption. The final build shows the effect of power virtualization. Stealing that typical 20% over estimation from all the existing servers and giving it to us for putting more blades in the rack. 90% more servers on the same power is the kind of improvement we can make here. Add virtualization and you can cut the power by even more on a per server basis.

IBM® Systems Director IBM Systems Director provides a platform management foundation that streamlines the way physical and virtual systems are managed across a heterogeneous environment. By leveraging industry standards, Systems Director supports multiple operating systems and virtualization technologies across IBM and non-IBM platforms. This breadth of support is key as customers look to manage costs by reducing the number of tools they deploy and learn. Through a single user interface, Systems Director provides consistent views for visualizing managed systems, determining how these systems relate to one another and identifying their statuses, thus helping to correlate technical resources with business needs. A set of common tasks included with Systems Director provides many of the core capabilities required for basic management, which means instant out-of-the-box business value. These common tasks include discovery, inventory, configuration, system health, monitoring, updates, event notification and automation across managed systems. Systems Director 6.1 adoption of a common agent with certain Tivoli products allows for simpler integration, with a single incoming port (firewall friendly) and common authentication and credential management.

Transition to HS23 for more flexibility and performance
IBM BladeCenter HS22
IBM BladeCenter HS22V
2S Workhorse collaboration blade designed to run multiple workloads well
•Up to 80% more processing power vs current generation
1. Protección de la Inversión. El mismo diseño de Blade/Switches desde 2002.
2. Mayor confiabilidad.
HP solo soporta 800MHz 4R DIMMs.

How many times a supposed BC advantage was written in a RFP spec? Is our BSS + BP team able to communicate and convince a customer on a specific BC advantage ? OLD CISCO compatibility. HP hasn’t CISCO switches in their portfolio so can be seen as less open than IBM. http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/blades/components/c-class-interconnects.html

BladeCenter Disadvantages vs HP - 2011
1. HP tiene DIMMs de 32GB, IBM solo 16GB. Esto permite tener384GB vs 192GB memoria máxima en BL 460 G7. Adicionalmente IBM 16GB Dual Rank DIMM 1333MHz es costoso vs HP 16GB Quad Rank DIMM de 1066MHz. (Especificar velocidad de la memoria en RFP)
2. IBM tiene mayor confiabilidad. CISCO no incluye PFA.
