THE BRIEF.Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style). Maximum four members to a group.

I AM A MAG.. REFLECTION AND EVALUATION.

MASTHEAD.This is the title of my publication, which appears at the top of the page so that it is always seen when stacked on a news stand. It takes up 1/6 of the page so that it stands out on the page and the audiences are able to recognise the magazine.

STAR.

STRAP.

BUTTON.This button was used to advertise a competition within the publication, it stands out on the FC and catches the audiences attention.

This strap was used to suggest the theme of this addition of the publication. “FESTIVAL FEVER” suggests that this is a summer addition filled with music and festival stories. With the strap being at the top of the page it not only adds extra information it also attracts the reader in the first place.

In this case, the star/stars on this magazine is me “REBEKHA” the use of camera angle CLOSE UP and eye contact is essential to draw in the audience.

Page 14: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

HOW I WOULD IMPROVE...

• USE OF COLOURS AND HOUSE STYLE- The colours I used, I now feel are too dull and do not stand out enough to draw in the audience and grab their attention.

•FEATURES- A list of features and stories are needed on the front cover. Interesting, eye catching headlines are also needed to retain the audience.

AQUINAS COLLEGE MAGAZINE.AUDIENCE RESEARCH.

We surveyed the class to find out many things about the pupils at Aquinas college, we found out from what they studied too what they get up to in their spare time, we also found out with bus route they used. We did this so we could include useful stories and features that the students

would want and what would interest them to make them want to consume the product.

BUTTON.This button was used to advertise a competition within the publication, in this case it was too offer student discount which would really appeal to the target audience.

FEATURES.This list of features coordinate to the colour scheme of the front cover, I tried to use different angles to seem edgy.

This strap adds extra information and shows other features contained within the publication.

MASTHEAD.This is the title of this publication, which appears at the top of the page. In this case the title is AQUINAS- I made the A stand out my making it a different colour to match the colour scheme of each issues colour.

STAR.For this publication the star didn’t to suggest the ideal reader/student.

REJECTED IMAGE.I didn’t use this image as I felt there was too much going on in the background and there was no colours that would go well together.

SIMILAR PRINT MEDIA- RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS.

These are the three magazine I can compare my own publication to.The genre of my magazine is similar to NME and UNCUT however the features are focused on unsigned acts

who are yet to make it big in the music industry, they have also all been written for different audiences. I can also compare my publication to mixmag as I am also using the bold, bright colours to attract my audience.

NME DPS DECONSTRUCTION.DROP CAP.This is the first letter of the first word of the story which is larger then this rest of the text. It clearly states where the text starts.

PULL OUT QUOTE.Quotes are sometimes used in the headline, on the picture or in the stand first or to break up the text.

STAND FIRST. The stand first introduces the article and is positioned under the headline.

Page 27: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

IMAGES. Usually one large image is used, however even if more, colours are usually kept minimal and the DPS may only contain one or two main colours.

HEADLINE.The headline sometimes uses stylised font. It doesn't tell the reader much about the article, it is simply used to draw the reader in without them reading the article.

PHOTOCAPTION.Explains the image show, gives names and places to the pictures on the DPS.

COLUMNS.Writing in columns make it easier for the consumer to read.

ELIZA DOOLITTLE DPS.(BASED ON MUSIC VIDEO)

In order to understand and be able to use double page spread conventions in a musical context, I made a Double Page Spread using screen shots from the music video Pack Up

by Eliza Doolittle.

Page 29: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

How I made this.Rejected Images. These are the images which did not

make it onto the double page spread, some were due to quality and some were due to the fact they simply did

not portray the story of the video well.

This shot was blurry.

This shot wasn’t used due to lack of eye contact.

Page 30: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

How I made this.Rejected Images.

This shot doesn’t help tell this story of the music video.

This shot was not used as Eliza’s facial expression wasn’t portraying her well.

Page 31: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

Drafting- colour, arrangement on the page.

•I first started to plan my DPS my placing the headline and images where I wanted and also placing textboxes where the columns could go.

•I decided to go with a plain colour scheme of black and white, so that the consumers eye would be drawn to the images first.

UK TRIBES.

UK TRIBES RESEARCH WITHIN THE UK.•I research into the many tribes within the UK today, and found which ones would be most suited to the genre of my magazines. I was surprised to see which tribes linked together and who fit in to which group. Everything from what music they listen to, too what they drink changes which tribe people belong to.

FRONT COVER IMAGES.

FINAL FRONT COVER IMAGE.

•I first decided that this photograph (right)would be my front page image as I felt the star would be a good representation of the genre I had chosen. I also edited the picture using the program called; PICASA, I did this so the image would be brighter and seem more edgier.

•However I soon changed my mind whilst starting to arrange the features and decide on the colours. I found that this image (left) was a lot better quality and allowed me to be experimental with my colours and fonts, I also edited this image to make it brighter and increased the contrast.

BUILDING MY BRAND.

FONT. COLOUR.

STAR.

MODE OF ADDRESS.

FONT.

There are many ways I can build my brand using fonts, colours and connotations. They make the magazine stand out and recognisable week after week or month after month, the same house style on every issue helps brand loyalty and allows the publication to create a need for the consumers.

The person on the front cover used shows genre and allows the audience to instantly know the genre of music contained within my publication.

Means how the publication speaks to the audience which allows the consumers to relate to the magazine.

•The bright yellow colour of the masthead allows the audience to recognise the product, every issue. •The colour scheme plays a large part in building the brand. •Colour can also allow for the publication to stand out on the news stand from other music magazines, with similar genres.

Font also helps in building the brand and making it recognisable to the consumers.

Page 37: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

FIRST DRAFT + audience feedback.

The set out of my features were brought up in my audience feed back especially this section. The cross looked messy and unprofessional, also the colour of the headline and caption were the wrong colours and needed to be the other way around.

The button was brought up in my audience feed back, the font used didn’t look right as it is all spaced out wrongly.

The anchor written in large yellow font was too large and cramped, also being in the same font and colour as the masthead it took the attention of it.

Page 38: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

FINAL FRONT COVER.

Page 39: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

CONTENTS IMAGES.

I firstly chose these three photographs to be on my contents page.

I chose these three images as I felt they were all good quality photos and would go together well when placed is coordinating positions. I also thought they could be anchored well, with page numbers and captions.

However I soon noticed that these images were a lot better, they were able to carry on the genre within the publication. They also allowed me to continue the colour scheme and house style using the same bright and bold colours.

Page 40: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

CONTENTS PAGE.FINAL CONTENTS PAGE.

During audience feed back it was suggested that maybe a quote could be used on the contents pages instead of using caption after caption. So for my final version I included a quote- making it bold and stand out, which would automatically attracts the audiences attention.

Page 41: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

Page 42: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD IMAGES.MAIN IMAGE.

This photograph was my first choice of image for my double page spread as I feel it really represents the band and story. It also reinforces the genre within the publication. In addition this image also goes along with the quote used for the headline, which created a need for this to be the main eye catching image on the double spread.

Quote used for headline.

I chose to use these images as well to show the band at work and to introduce all members of the unsigned band. Which allows the audience to be able to relate to the artists by seeing what they look like/what they wear and also in these images I feel that their personality is shown to.

Questions 1: Who would be the audience for

your media product?

Page 46: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

My PRIMARY and SECONDARY target audience/demographic;

QUESTION ONE.

DEMOGRAPHIC.GENDER:

HOBBIES:

P: The target audience would be female due to the colours used and the star used.S: this could be a male audience as there are many features and stories within my magazine which would appeal to this gender however also the ratio of male indie bands and artists to female bands is quite high.

P: My audience’s main hobby would be music and to be in a band or to be a solo artist wanting to break into the industry.

S: People who just generally enjoy listening to music but are more focus on other areas of the media such as; Film or Journalism.

P: Between the ages of 16-22.S: Older people within the music industry looking for new talent.

P: Student and member of a band or just involved in low key music production.S: People who already have their foot in the music or media industry.

These are the main UK tribes my magazine would appeal too, as their music taste would match the genre of my publication.

Page 48: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

HOW MY MAGAZINE APPEALS TO MY AUDIENCE;QUESTION ONE.

STAR.Reflects ideal reader and is inspirational to audience, a role model for many of them. The star must also reflect the genre or the magazine as students want it to be clear and in their face.

EYE CONTACT.The use of eye contact allows the audience to connect and relate to the star.

BUTTON.This button advertises a competition within the magazine, the band used on the button is another way the publication can show genre, this specific competition also appeals to my demographic as students don’t have a lot of money to spend on tickets.

COLOURS AND FEATURES.The colours are bright and bold and the features contain stars which are inspirational to the audience.

HOW I ATTRACTED MY AUDIENCE.

This BUTTON, quite low down on the page, it shows a competition. The larger, capitalised, bold font grabs the readers attention instantly.

The MASTHEAD is in a block bold font, which addresses the target audience, I chose the lime green/yellow colour to continue with retro urban theme and to contrast with her hair. The word UNSIGNED suggests simply the what the publication is about. The tagline is an inspirational line that the audience can follow.

Page 53: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

HOW I ATTRACTED MY AUDIENCE.

•The colour scheme I have chosen is a lime green/yellow, because it isn't gender exclusive and is bright, bold and in your face.• It would stand out well on a news stand.•The colour also goes well with the colour scheme of the contents and the double page spread even though the double page spread doesn’t include the same colours however still uses bold stand out colours.

Questions 3: How does your media product

represent particular social

groups?

Page 56: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

HOW STARS REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

In this Lily Allen image, Lily looks very glamorous, attractive and smart, she is appealing to a fashion conscience, designer wearing, girly target audience.

However In this Lily Allen image, Lily looks more rough and dangerous. She is representing a more indie, musically inspired, rebellious target audience.

Page 57: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

HOW STARS REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

•Stars used within publications and especially those used on the front cover must represent the target demographic.

•The audience must also be inspired by the star and admire their work and the way they are.

•The stars attitude and personality must be able to come across in the photography, the confidence of the artist must be inspirational.

Page 58: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

•Use of font and colour and language can represent social groups also.

How does publications represent particular social groups?

•This masthead is in a block bold font, which addresses a typical indie social group as it continues with retro urban theme of the publication. •The word UNISGNED suggests those who are very musically inspired and are in band- a lot of the unsigned band scene consists of indie/soft rock bands.

This is the masthead for the publication; KERRANG made by the institution Bauer. The font of this masthead suggests danger and was not made to look polished, this represent the social group KERRANG is aimed at. The actually word KERRANG is the sound a guitar makes when strung, the social group and the target audience will relate to this as the music they would listen too would be the heavier rock sound.

FONTS.

www.urbanfonts.com

URBANFONTS.COM was used for all fonts on the front cover and a few more throughout the rest of the publication. For most fonts I went for a simple, bold in your face font however on the front I used

one font which I want to look like handwriting (font above) I did this to contrast the rest of the text and make the main story stand out.

Page 63: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

COLOURS.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product.

I wanted the colours used to be one of the main reason my publication could stand out from the rest. At first my masthead was a grey colour however after a while I found it dull and that it was not

standing out enough especially as the picture was so bold. So I then went for the bright yellow colour as I felt it really went well with the house style. The red and blue also used was got from the star’s shirt however I felt it was essential to carry on this colour scheme throughout the magazine to

show that the publication is based on British music.

Page 64: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

PUBLISHER.

I enhanced my publisher skills also through

constructing this product. Using different word art

techniques and positioning my images and text to fit

my house style. This made my publication look more appealing to the audience

and also more professional.

Challenging forms and conventions of real media products...

VsOne of the main differences between my publication and others is that my magazine is very much

focused on the not so well known unsigned music scene, it will contain signed acts which my consumers would aspire to be. However most publications such as; NME only contains signed

bands/artists from large record labels.

Page 68: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

Challenging forms and conventions of real media products...

These two mastheads are from two well known indie/rock publications, however both aimed for different audiences the two mastheads use similar colours which are then used throughout the rest of the magazine. I wanted to challenge this convention by using an unusual colour which may not

be associated with the music genre Indie.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Page 71: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

Uncut and NME are sister publications. Many of the audience who have grown up with NME move on to Uncut as it is aimed at the older audience but still contains similar bands and same genres. I think my publication would go well with these two as my magazine as contains the same genre and contains similar bands/artists however focus’ on the unsigned music scene.

Page 74: A Grade PowerPoint "Unsigned " Music Mag

I would only sell the publication, UNSIGNED in the United Kingdom (focusing on England) as it is the British audience that know more of the indie genre from the music to the fashion- it would also focus on the main cities where music is well known especially the unsigned scene, such as: Manchester.
