The Pinellas County Public Safety Complex (PSC) is an $81 million facility built in Western Pinellas County, that brings together numerous public

entities into a shared campus.

The complex opened in June 2014 and houses the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch, 9-1-1 Emergency Communications, County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the County’s new Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The Complex also includes a Vehicle Maintenance Building, a Communications Building with a 300-foot-tall communications tower, a 667-space Parking Garage and a Central Energy Plant.

The PSC now consolidates all the above components of county government, previously scattered about the county in separate facilities. In addition to speeding and enhancing communications, the complex also provides a building for the emergency operations center which can withstand a Category 5 Hurricane.

Early in 2014 Trane Rental Services opened an Orlando Depot to service the entire State of Florida . To handle almost any emergency or planned outage of a chilled

water system, the Orlando facility has a large stock of air cooled chillers, water cooled chillers, cooling towers as well as support equipment such as generators, transformers, pumps, heat exchangers and flexible chilled water hose (2 .5”, 4” and 6”) . This equipment can be on your job site within just a few hours .

For DX projects Orlando has a large stock of medium and large rooftop units along with collapsible flex duct and electrical cables for quick installation . Oil free air compressors, desiccant

dehumidifiers and several types of heaters are also available .

In addition to the Orlando Depot, Tampa Bay Trane stocks over 150 tons of rental units in our six Trane Supply facilities . From Hudson to Naples, our customers have quick access to a variety of DX units —from 1-ton spot coolers to 25-ton trailer-mounted package units .

Seeing is Believing

There are numerous CVHS oil-free chillers being installed in

the State of Florida, but the first machine started and running on Florida’s West Coast was installed at Plymouth Harbor in Sarasota in August 2014 . The new chiller replaces a Trane Model CVHE Centravac which provided trouble free operation to the building’s residents for the past 28 years .

The CVHS utilizes Trane’s traditional low pressure, direct drive design, but the Model CVHS is equipped with ceramic bearings that require no oil . The machine comes equipped with permanent magnet motors and a built-in variable frequency drive to enhance part load operations along with advanced temperature and safety controls . The CVHS is

designed to fit through a double door without disassembly or if smaller components are required, the machine can easily

be disassembled and reassembled for replacement equipment projects . The chiller utilizes highly efficient Refrigerant 123 and every machine comes with Trane’s 0 .0% Leak-Tight Warranty . Under the 0 .0% Leak-Tight Warranty, Trane will provide replacement refrigerant at no cost for any refrigerant lost due to a leak for the first five (5) years of the chiller’s operation . Here’s how it works: if your servicer determines that there has been a loss of refrigerant, have him repair the leak

and contact Trane – any lost refrigerant will be replaced at zero cost for 5 years .

If a Trane Select Service Agreement is

continuously in place, the Trane 0 .0% Leak-Tight Warranty can be extended for the full life of the machine, thus providing a LIFETIME REFRIGERANT WARRANTY .

To believe it, you really have to listen to the RTAE super quiet air cooled chiller in operation. There are several RTAE machines already running in Florida, but the first machine with a full sound attenuation package on Florida’s West Coast is an RTAE 165 being built for The Ritz Carlton Beach Residents on Lido Key in Sarasota. The machine is replacing a 5-year-old competitive machine whose operating noise level was unacceptable to the residents of the luxury high rise condominium building being served by this equipment

The RTAE is available in 150-300 tons and utilizes direct-drive screw compressors with built-in variable speed drives that deliver far lower noise levels than standard compressors.

In addition, Trane’s unique condenser fan motor and fan wheel design make a significant contribution to the overall ‘near-silent’ operation. More words will not do the subject justice. To hear this machine in operation is to believe what Trane engineering has accomplished.

The project was designed by Harvard Jolly Architects while the mechanical and electrical systems were designed by Engineering Matrix. The project’s General Contractor was The Lend Lease Group and the mechanical contractor was Page Mechanical.

Tampa Bay Trane is proud to have provided Trane water cooled centrifugal chillers with condenser water sourced from geothermal wells, Trane air cooled chillers, Trane air handlers, Trane vav boxes as well as a campus-wide Trane digital control system.

The Trane Tracer ES Control System not only controls all of the temperatures and humidity related to the building’s comfort and data processing cooling equipment, but is also integrated with the following campus systems which are critical for the overall operations: Geothermal Pumping, Lighting Controls, Emergency Generators, Emergency Generator Fuel

System, Emergency Generator Paralleling Switch Gear, UPS systems, Transfer Distribution Gear, BTU Meters, Power Use Meters to Distributed Switch Boards, Building Fire Alarm, Building Main Security Panel, Electrical Branch Circuit Monitor and Building Branch Circuit Monitor.

Clearly, the Trane Tracer ES Control System plays a far bigger role at the Pinellas County Public Safety Complex than just managing the HVAC System.
