A Note From Pastor Carol

Have you read the book In His Steps? It has been in print for over 100 years and is still having a powerful impact on the people who read it. The book cen-ters on the theme found in I Peter 2:21: To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

The author imagines Jesus coming into the worship service of a wealthy church. He is in the distressing disguise of a “very dusty, shabby and generally tramp-like” young man. The young man represents Jesus. The question that runs through the book is, “How would Jesus live, if he walked the streets of our hometown, if we looked around our church building”? Using the words and actions of Christ as our guide, we continue to ask this question of ourselves and of our church. How can we follow in these holy footsteps or our friend and Savior? Who is our neighbor and how can we extend Christian hospitality to them? “Where the Spirit of God is moving, love for God always, always, always overflows in love for neighbor”. (McLaren, We Make the Road by Walking, p. 216) We know God’s plan is that the Holy Spirit fuels all the friends of Jesus with the job of spreading the good-news message of God’s love, a message that includes both deeds and words. Being involved in mission locally and around the world is what motivates us to put all our effort and energy into our upcoming Spaghetti Feast and Auction Fundraiser. Why do we need funds? So that we can faithfully live as Christ’s followers; continuing to reach out in mission, following in Christ’s footsteps. I am asking each person at our church to boldly ask for donations for our auction. Also, I encourage you to be generous in donating your time through a service item (see my letter for ideas). An example from my own local experience: I asked my haircutter for a donation and she asked what we were fundraising for. I explained that we were raising funds so that we could continue to offer our building to the community and explained the many groups that do so and the services they provide. We are fundraising so that we can continue to offer help to the community. She was happy to put together a basket of products for a donation! (If someone needs a tax-deductible receipt, get one from the office). ***This week our church has been given an invitation to be involved in an exciting part-nership. The Board from the Astoria Warming Center has asked us to consider being their new home for 2015-2016. They feel our social hall and kitchen provide the ideal location to offer food and shelter to people who need a safe, warm space to sleep when the weather gets too severe. Board members will join us at our Council Meeting in June to give us information and to field any questions we might have. Please start praying for God to guide and direct us re-garding this amazing opportunity for mission in our own church.

It is a joy to serve with you,

Pastor Carol

A Note From Pastor Jane

Living in the Rhythms of Ordinary Time

(inspired by Rev. Jan L. Richardson in Sacred Journeys) We are moving into the longest season of the Christian year, the season to celebrate the while we have times and rhythms of predictability, we spend a lot of time deal-ing with the day to day, often unpredictable happens and encounters with life in our place, in our community and in our internal seeking. I invite you to a time of celebra-tion for the ways we are sustained between the feast times and the fast times of our human condition.

We never know when the divine presence may show up as we go about our daily work and routines. Drying dishes, digging weeds, washing cars, repairing broken shelves and choosing our food are all part of our everyday. Be alert to your inner atti-tude toward these chores, activities and en-counters. God is always with us--seeking that crack to illuminate with Love's Light.

Blessings for this time, Pastor Jane

Please know how precious your connections with us have been during these months since Jim's death in late January. Last year at this time, you were with us to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. It was such a great time of celebration. Now, those cards, calls, gentle hugs, messages, memorial do-nations and special gatherings have all been part of this early adventure with deep grief. The family has appreciated the ways you have shared your expe-riences and invited us to be in contact whenever needed. Your private atten-tion to me is so special. You are our treasure. Thank you. The contributions

to KMUN have exceeded $5000. Jim would be honored and humbled for that support. This short poem was written by granddaughter, Krysta and I wanted to include it for all of you to share. Our gratitude is overflowing.

My Guardian G-Papa Dear Guardian G-Papa , ever at my side. How lovely you must be to leave your home in heaven to guard a child like me.

When I'm far away from home or maybe hard at play, I know you will protect me from harm along the way. Your handsome and sweet smiling face, I see not, though you're near. The humor in your charming voice, I cannot really hear.

When I pray, you're praying too, Your prayer is just for me. But, when I sleep you never do, You're watching over me.

Marked By God: A pastor who recently traveled to Russia observed a curious sight on the roads. In their back windows, certain cars displayed a large card bearing only an exclamation point. After inquiring, he discovered that new drivers in that country are required to keep those signs up for seven years. What an incentive to stay on the

“straight and narrow” as one undertakes the responsibility of driving! The exclamation points made the pastor wonder: How are we “marked” when we enter into a relationship with Jesus? As we travel through life, what evidence indicates that we’re faithfully following him? How are we exclaiming our joy at being forgiven and redeemed? Try this: Write some exclamation points on sticky notes, and put them where you’ll see them often. No matter what detours or roadblocks you encounter, remember that you’re a beloved child of God — marked by him, through faith, for eternal life!

Hello Neighbor! Soup’s On! Thank you to everyone for your participation in our first Soup Service. We hung 48 Door Hanger Invitations and handed out many more. Did you meet anyone new? Remember to reach out to them in the coming weeks and invite them to have coffee or simply give them a call and tell them how special it was to have them here to share soup with us. Don’t be afraid to invite them to worship with us.

Pastor Carol described the planning and implementing of the soup service as a “Living Sermon”. It caused us all to dig deeper and maybe even made a few of us uncomfortable. Sometimes when we step out in faith, the unknown scares us. That should not stop us from following Jesus and spreading the good news of the gospel...even through the simple act of breaking bread with our neighbors and friends.

Bits & Bites

All mankind is one volume, when one man dies,

one chapter is not torn out of the book,

but translated into a better language. And every chapter must be so translated,

God employs several translators,

some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war,

some by justice,

but God's hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again for that library,

where every book shall lie open to one another.

John Donne, 17 century English Poet quoted in the movie "84 Charing Cross Road"

Thank you for all your prayers for my husband, Paul Leighton. He is doing very

well after his stem cell transplant last July. He has now passed 2 months without any anti-rejection meds, and is off all other meds! He still doesn’t have any im-

munity so we’ll all feel a little better when he begins his baby vaccines in Au-gust. You can see in the picture how well he looks with our twins who just

turned 12 on May 1st, and my mom Marge. Below is an anonymous letter from

his donor in Germany. In 2 years we can share contact info. Sincerely, Laura Littlejohn

(This is the letter from the Stem Cell Donor)

Hello to a person in USA! At the beginning you have to know that I am not the best writer in your language. So I will try by the medium of “dict.cc”.

After more than a half-year after transplanting stem cells it appears to me the right amount of time to send

you my best wishes. Donating stem cells in July 2104 was a very interesting and exciting enterprise for me and my family. But

for you it should be one of the most exciting and exhausting experiences humans can do for health. And so I hope that your health will be better. God will give the rest.

To the present it seems that you are headed in the right direction. That’s why this letter shall convey our

pleasure to you. All, all, all the best…

Priorities By Harmon Killebrew My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, “You’re tear-ing up the grass.” “We’re not raising grass,” Dad would reply. “We’re raising boys.”

“The greatest gift I ever had cam from God. I call him dad.” - Anonymous

What is a Dad? A dad is someone who wants to Catch you before you fall But instead picks you up, brushes you off, And lets you try again.

A dad is someone who wants to Keep you from making mistakes But instead lets you find your own way, Even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, Scolds you when you break the rules, Shines with pride when you succeed,
