General Humanities

Saint Louis University Dissertation FellowshipsDeadline: spring semester of each year Purpose: Dissertation Fellowships are competitively awarded to Saint Louis University Ph.D. candidates whose work, during their time at Saint Louis University, demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and whose dissertation will significantly extend the body of knowledge within their discipline. Students interested in being nominated should contact their department or PhD mentor.Award Details: Each eleven-month fellowship award carries a monthly stipend, 12 hours of tuition scholarship during the regular academic year, 3 hours during the Summer session and health insurance. Summer attendance is mandatory. Recipients of the award are expected to enroll in as a full-time graduate student each summer beginning with the first year of their fellowship. Houghton Library (Harvard College) Short-Term FellowshipsDeadline: JanuaryPurpose: Houghton Library is the principal rare book and manuscript library of Harvard College. The Library's holdings are particularly strong in the following areas: European, English, American, and South American literature, including the country's pre-eminent collection of American literary manuscripts; philosophy; religion; history of science; music; printing and graphic arts; dance; and theatre. Fellows will also have access to collections in Widener Library as well as to other libraries at the University. Preference is given to scholars whose research is closely based on materials in Houghton collections, especially when those materials are unique.Award details: Each fellow is expected to be in residence at Houghton for at least four weeks during the fellowship year (these do not have to be consecutive weeks), and each fellow is expected to produce a written summary of their experience working with the collection. The stipend for each fellowship is $3,000. Other than the Pantzer Fellowship, applicants need not apply for specific fellowships, as the Selection Committee would determine which fellowship is best suited to your research.

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation FellowshipsDeadline: FebruaryDetails: Year-long fellowships of $20,000 are awarded to graduate students who will complete the writing of a dissertation within the award year. Questions that interest the foundation concern violence and aggression in relation to social change, intergroup conflict, war, terrorism, crime, and family relationships, among other subjects. CLIR/Library of Congress Mellon FellowshipDeadline: NovemberPurpose: The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is offering a fellowship award to support original source dissertation research in the humanities or related social sciences at the Preservation Research and Testing Division of the Preservation Directorate at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC….CLIR seeks proposals from applicants whose dissertation projects will benefit from the opportunity to examine primary sources using the array of new technologies and equipment available at the Library of Congress. Applicants should explain how their research will reveal previously hidden content and properties of original sources, support new interpretations of those sources, and advance scholarship in their field.Award details: The fellow will receive a stipend of $2,000 per month for a period ranging from 9-12 months, and will receive an additional $1,000 upon participating in a symposium on research in original sources and submitting a report acceptable to CLIR on the research experience. American Association of University Women (AAUW) Dissertation FellowshipDeadline: November Purpose: American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly

Collections that are administered by UCLA Library Special Collections and available for fellowship-supported research include materials in the humanities and social sciences, medicine, life and physical sciences, visual and performing arts, and UCLA history.Award details: Research residencies may last up to three months between January 7 and December 13, 2013. Williams College Gaius Charles Bolin Dissertation Fellowship, Williamstown, MADeadline: NovemberPurpose: The Gaius Charles Bolin Fellowships at Williams College are designed to promote diversity on college faculties by encouraging students from underrepresented groups to complete a terminal graduate degree and to pursue careers in college teaching.Award details: The Bolin Fellowships are two-year residencies at Williams, and up to three scholars or artists are appointed each year. Fellows devote the bulk of the first year to the completion of dissertation work while also teaching one course as a faculty member in one of the College’s academic departments or programs. The second year of residency (ideally with degree in hand) is spent on academic career development while again teaching just one course.Terms: The annual stipend for the position is $36,000. Huntington FellowshipDeadline: December Purpose: The Huntington is an independent research center located in San Marino, California with holdings in American history and literature, among other subjects. It awards over one hundred short-term fellowships each year. Fellows are expected to live in continuous residence at the Huntington and to make a contribution to its intellectual life. Most fellowships are awarded in general categories, but there are also several specific ones. One application is sufficient to apply for multiple fellowships. Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society, Hagley Museum and Library, Wilmington, DEDeadline: NovemberPurpose: This fellowship is designed for graduate students who have completed all course work for the doctoral degree and are conducting research on their dissertation. We invite applications from Ph.D. candidates whose research on important historical questions would benefit from use of Hagley's research collections. Applications should demonstrate superior intellectual quality, present a persuasive methodology for the project, and show that there are significant research materials at Hagley pertinent to the dissertation.Award details: This is a residential fellowship with a term of four months. The fellowship provides $6,500, free housing on Hagley's grounds, use of a computer, mail and internet access, and an office. (Recipients who use this housing are strongly encouraged to have a car available for transportation during their residency.) Dissertation fellows are expected to have no other obligations during the term of the fellowship, to maintain continuous residence at Hagley for its duration, and to participate in events organized by Hagley's Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society.
