What’s new at Advanced? Of course you get more calls and more formations. However, Advanced dancing is a little more than just learning a bunch of new calls. It’s thinking about dancing in a different way—it’s dancing in a thinking way. The calls that you learn require more positional awareness (are you a lead? center? who’s your current partner? Where’s the center of the square? Where’s the group of 4 that you’re working with?). Many Advanced dancers memorize the call definitions. Some people like Advanced dancing; some don’t. Being an Advanced dancer does not mean you’re a better dancer. It means you like to think while you dance, you want a little more challenge and variety, and you’re willing to put some time into learning new stuff. I think Advanced dancing is fun, and I hope you will too. I’ll certainly do my best to make learning it fun. You can reach me at [email protected] or 265-6094 or talk to me between tips. Let me know what you think. Advanced Notes by Kris Jensen Remember, in a Half Sashay, the Right Hand dancer (belle) crosses in front of the Left Hand dancer (beau). This call used to be on the Basic list; it was removed about 5 years ago because callers didn’t use it much. I think one reason for its disuse was because of confusion over the ending formation. New Naming Convention: Belles andBeausDefinition: In a couple, the dancer on the left is the“Beau,” and the dancer on the right is the “Belle.”

Needless to say, Beaus andBelles have nothing to dowith Boys and Girls.

Whether you’re a Boy or aGirl is determined at thebeginning of the tip andstays the same throughoutthe tip. Whether you’re aBeau or a Belle can changeafter every call.

The hard part here is notovershooting on the quarterturn.

You also need to rememberthat this is a Right Handcall: it always starts with aright hand (like Swing Thru).

And yes, there is a LeftQuarter Thru.

Quarter ThruStarting Formation: Any appropriate 4-dancerformation, including RH Box Circulate, LH FacingDiamondsDefinition: Those who can Cast Off 1/4 by the Right, then those who can Trade by the Left. There must bedancers who can do each part -- the call is not legal, say, from a right-hand tidal wave.Ending Formation: Depends on starting formation

If there are two side-by-side formations each of whichcan do the call, dancers don't move from one to theother. From parallel columns, for example, each of thetwo box circulate formations does the call independently.

What’s a general line? It’s aline set-up where the dancerscan be facing in or out of thesquare. Any Wave is a generalline, as is a 2-Faced Line, anInverted Line, a 3 and 1 Line,Facing Lines, and OutfacingLines.

I might indicate a general linelike this, to show that itdoesn’t matter which waythe dancers are facing.

Notice that thediagram for After Half Tagis the same for all thestarting positions, nomatter which way thedancers are facing in theiroriginal General Line.

The hard part with Turn andDeal is remembering whichway to turn!

On Turn and Deal, it may helpto note that you always endup standing beside theperson who was your partnerwhen the call started, butyou’re holding opposite handswith that person and you’refacing the opposite direction of the direction you werefacing when you started.

This is our first major multi-part call. While it’s commonlycalled from LH two-facedlines with the boys in themiddle, it’s not uncommonfor it to be called from otherformations and boy/girlarrangements.

Ends: Use your outside handfor the 3/4 Arm Turn. Endleads, you’ll roll back towardsthat outside hand, so youshould be very clear on whichhand to use—make itobvious to the trailer.

Outfacing center: Rememberto cloverleaf away from thecenter of your line.

Infacing center: You get thewhooping and holleringpart—but don’t do thestyling until you’recomfortable with the call.Otherwise, you’re likely to gothe wrong way. So whenyou’re starting, just extend, hinge, and extend withoutusing both hands.

Cast A ShadowStarting Formation: General lines with the endsforming a tandem [At Advanced, this call is used onlywhere at least one center in each line/wave is facingout.]Definition: The ends do 1/2 Zoom, Arm Turn 3/4,and Spread, to become the ends of the resultingformation. The centers facing out Cloverleaf to step inbetween the casting dancers. The centers facing inExtend, Hinge, and Extend to fill the vacant spot.Ending Formation: Depends on starting formation

Start Finish Start Finish

From promenade: The caller must designate twocouples, e.g., “Heads Cast a Shadow.” Everyone actsas though the formation were two-faced lines, with thedesignated couples as the leads. Thus, the outsides doa 1/2 Zoom (with the designated outside acting as thelead), Arm Turn 3/4, and Spread, while the designatedcenters Cloverleaf, and the other centers Hinge andExtend. Ends in parallel waves.

It’s easy to confuse this callwith Pass In. In a Pass In,first you Pass Thru, and thenyou turn 1/4 to face thecenter of the set. In aQuarter In, you turn 1/4 toface your partner. ThinkQuarter=Partner.

Remember: Belle walks, beauflops over.

These two calls (a) don’tdance very well, and (b)usually cause massconfusion. They are yet more“quick twitch” calls that acaller can use todiscombobulate the dancers.

Ed Foote usually teaches thisby telling the belle to use “thefinger” to point at the beauwho needs to get out of herway. In gay styling, the bellepretends (emhasis on thepretends) to slap the beauwith her right hand, therebyinducing him to flop out ofthe way. Neither techniquereally helps, but it can makethe confusion funy.

Concept: As CouplesStarting Formation: Any formation composed only ofcouples, for example double pass thru, facing lines, orparallel two-faced lines.Definition: This is used to modify a call, e.g., “AsCouples Walk and Dodge” from parallel two-facedlines. Each couple acts as though it were a single dancer, and does the part of the call appropriate to its positionin the starting formation. For example, the diagrams below show As CouplesWalk and Dodge. Each couple works as a unit, and thedancers act as though they were in a box circulateformation. The couples facing in take the part of singledancers facing in, and the couples facing out take thepart of single dancers facing out. The result is shownat the right.Ending Formation: Depends on starting formation andcall

Doing Concepts is a littlelike playing Simon Says: ifthe caller doesn’t prefacethe call with the concept, then the call is donenormally.

When doing As Couples, youmight want to put your armaround the other person inyour couple so you won’taccidentally becomedetached during the call. Atthe very least, keep holdinghands during the call.

Dancersthink this

Basically, the ends stepforward, face in, and stepforward. That last stepforward is important; theends sometimes have atendency to step forwardand face in, and then theyforget to step forward again. This can leave them out ofposition for the next call.

Ends BendStarting Formation: Any formation with the Ends in aline.Definition: The ends do their part of a Bend the Line.Note that dancers can Roll after this call.Ending Formation: Depends on starting formation

This is a “normalizing” call;you’ll always end up in acouple with boy on the leftand girl on the right.

It means that you need toremember whether you’re aboy or a girl AND you needto figure out what to do toeither become normal (u-turn back) or stay normal(courtesy turn).

The hard part of this call isthe 3/4 cast. If you haveproblems with it, you mightconsider it as a Trade plusanother quarter. I’ve foundthat approach a little easierthan counting walls.

Three Quarter ThruStarting Formation: any appropriate 4-dancer formation(e.g., right-hand box circulate)Definition: Those who can Cast Off by the Right 3/4,then those who can Trade by the Left. As with QuarterThru, there must be people doing each part of the call.Ending Formation: Usually a wave

Cycle And WheelStarting Formation: 3x1 LinesDefinition: The dancers in the mini-wave do a Recyclewhile the couple does a Wheel And Deal. If the ends ofthe line are facing opposite directions, this will end incouples facing. If the ends are both facing the samedirection, the right end must pass in front, to end intandem couples.Ending Formation: Facing or Tandem Couples

Both of these calls aresimple variants of QuarterThru and 3/4 Thru. The hardpart is to NOT do a GrandQuarter Thru when you’re ina column (like NOT doing aGrand Swing Thru insteadof a Swing Thru in a TidalWave.
