To us, location means reputation. That’s why we chose

Bishop’s Waltham, one of Hampshire’s most beautiful

and sought-after areas. It’s where we’ve combined our

love of traditional village architecture with everything

you’d expect from a modern home – for the life you

want to live.

Arthur Helps was instrumental in the growth of Bishop’s

Waltham. In 1862, he established the Bishop’s Waltham

Clay Company – manufacturers of world-class bricks

and terracotta. He was also involved with the Bishop’s

Waltham Railway Company, which linked the brickworks

and the town with the main London to Southampton line.

His influence is still felt to this day.

Today, only fragments of the railway remain,

but you can still trace the track bed that carried

precious cargo to and from the local area.

That historic route runs alongside The Brick

Station, forming part of the beautiful country

walk right on your doorstep.

The legacy of brickmaking and the railway lives

on in The Brick Station – named in honour of the

founding industries that made Bishop’s Waltham

what it is today.

The Bishop’s Waltham Clay Company garnered

a first-class reputation around the world as a

brickmaker. The company’s pottery was fine enough

to be presented to Queen Victoria – and this royal

influence helped bring the railway through the village.

Once the local line was established, the village’s

prime exports grew beyond bricks and tiles, and

an economic boom continued for over 100 years.

Bishop’s Waltham grew from a little Saxon hamlet

that slowly blossomed into a thriving market town

– but it wasn’t until the 19th century that the

brickworks and railway really put Bishop’s Waltham

on the map.

Before we buy new land to build on, we ask

ourselves; “would we live here?”

Bishop’s Waltham was a definite yes from us.

We knew we could continue and preserve the

traditions of the area, boost the local economy

and do some good beyond making our vision

a reality – and thanks to excellent road and

rail links, this charming little rural paradise has

become more accessible than ever.

The major hub cities of Southampton,

Portsmouth and Winchester are all roughly

half an hour’s drive away, and trains from

nearby stations at Eastleigh and Botley run

regular regional services.

At Bargate, we aim to combine the best of

quiet country living with connectivity to the
