Eden Quilt Show 2015 Twenty-five years ago the Eden Historical Society hosted a quilt show at the Asa Warren House. No one at the time imagined that this would set in motion a process which resulted in the establishment of the Eden Quilt Guilt. No one at the time even thought of quilt auctions in Eden that would over the next twenty-five years contribute over for-ty-thousand dollars to Roswell Park Cancer Institute for breast cancer research. No one guessed that hundreds of lap and crib sized quilts would warm many while receiving chemotherapy, brighten the day a little for children with terminal illness, or bring a smile to the loneliest and most forgotten of tragically wounded veterans. The Eden Quilt Guild celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year. The Guild began with a small group assembled to de-sign and construct a quilt to enter in an international quilt show to be held in NYC. As they worked together friend-ships were stitched as well as the quilt. With the quilt com-pleted and on its way to Manhattan, the ladies began a quilt to auction for the Food Pantry. Soon others asked about joining the group. In order to facilitate working around a quilt frame, the Guild was set up with small bees who meet in homes of the members. The bees then all join together once a month to share their individual and group creations, to encourage one another and to contribute to community groups and service organizations through gifts of quilts. They will be sharing their work with all who wish to come to the Eden United Methodist Church, September 25-26, 10:00 to 4:00.

FLASHBACKBy Mick Marper
1. Name the Stevie Wonder song in the soundtrack for the 1998 fi lm “You’ve Got Mail.”2. Which ‘60s girl group released “Quicksand”?3. What Edgar Winter Group song is played in the opening scenes of the 1990 fi lm “Air America”?4. Which band wrote and released “Myzsterious Mizster Jones”?5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “True love means planning a life for two, Being together the whole day through, True love means waiting and hoping that soon, Wishes we’ve made will come true.”
Answers 1. “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” released in 1970. 2. Martha and the Vandellas, in 1963. It was written, as many Motown hits were, by the HollandÐDozierÐHolland team. Aft er a legal snit with Motown, the trio continued to write under the pseudonym “Edythe Wayne.” 3. “Free Ride.” 4. Slade, in 1985. 5. “Paula,” by Paul & Paula, in 1963. It’s one of a number of songs about girls’ names -- “Donna the Prima Donna,” “Sally Go Round the Roses,” “Judy’s Turn to Cry,” “Denise” and “Candy Girl” -- all done in the same year, 1963. Th e fad must
have run its course because 1964 saw only a few girl-name songs.GOOD
HOUSEKEEPING 1Jerk Pork Chops w/Pineapple
We love this shortcut Ja-maican jerk -- made with thick, juicy pork and succu-lent fruit. Try our jerk rub on chicken pieces or salm-on steaks too.
1 baby pineapple or 1/2 reg-ular pineapple1 lime2 tablespoons jerk season-ing (see note)1 tablespoon olive oil4 pork loin chops, 3/4 inch thick (about 8 ounces each with bone)Lime wedges and cilantro sprigs for garnish
1. With sharp knife, cut pineapple lengthwise through crown to stem end in 4 wedges, leaving on leafy crown.2. From lime, grate 1/2 tea-spoon peel and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice. In small bowl, mix lime peel and juice with jerk seasoning and oil. Rub both sides of pork chops with jerk mix-ture.
3. Place pork chops on hot grill rack over medium heat; cook 10 to 12 minutes, turning chops over once, until browned on the out-side and still slightly pink on the inside. While chops are cooking, add pineapple wedges, cut sides down, to same grill; cook 5 minutes, turning wedges over once.4. Transfer chops and pine-apple to same platter. Gar-nish with lime wedges and cilantro sprigs. Makes 4 servings.
Note: Seasoning mixes vary among manufacturers, es-
pecially with regard to saltcontent. Add salt to taste ifnecessary.

Preparing Pets for DisasterDEAR PAW’S CORNER: Here in Florida, we’re urged to have a hurricane pre-paredness plan between June and November, which is traditionally hurricane season. But oft en emergen-cy offi cials forget about pets. Can you remind readers to include their pets in any di-saster planning? Th ings can happen really fast, and pets are oft en forgotten and put at risk. -- Larry in Deerfi eld Beach, Florida
DEAR LARRY: Absolutely! We’ve seen in past natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina that our pets can suff er greatly if no plan is in place for them. Dogs and cats cannot fend for them-selves aft er a disaster.
Diff erent regions of the country can experience diff erent issues, too. For example, the Northeast had one of its coldest, snowiest winters in almost two cen-turies this year. Roofs col-lapsed, people had trouble heating their homes and many seniors, oft en with pets, were stuck indoors for days on end. It was a diff er-ent kind of disaster, but no less stressful for those who were displaced or suff ered health issues.Th e Humane Society (www.humanesociety.org), Amer-ican Red Cross (www.red-cross.org/prepare/location/home-family/pets), Ready.gov (www.ready.gov/car-ing-animals) and the Cen-ters for Disease Control
and Prevention (www.cdc.gov/features/petsanddisas-ters/) all have detailed in-formation to help you pre-pare pets in case you haveto quickly evacuate yourhome.Guidelines include but ar-en’t limited to: making sureyour pets’ vaccinations areup to date and that theywear ID tags, license andideally are microchipped;having a pet carrier foreach pet; adding pet sup-plies, medications and extraleashes and collars to yourdisaster kit; and keeping acopy of all pet records withyour critical family docu-ments.

RE-ELECTJOE GIAMBRONE!
YOUR TRUE FRIENDAS TOWN OF BRANT HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT
Joe Giambrone’s political life has spanned over 30 years. Joe has provided the Town of Brant with technical, mechanical, and physical expertise that is necessary to carry out an proj-ect required by the Highway Department. The undertaking of Highway Superintendent is a hands-on job and also includes a political interconnection. Working with and for the electorate is all part of the position. Working with people of many different personalities and viewpoints sometimes brings upon both agree-ment and conflict. Many should understand that their way of seeing things is not always shared by their elect-ed officials. They should accept it as being part of the democratic process and that others will go to great lengths to express their discontent using dishonest methods. A valuable public servant does what is good for all people, not only a chosen few. Joe Giambrone has alway lived his life with HONESTY and INTEGRITY and by nature has run a clean campaign, never engaging in acts of DIRTY POLITICS or enlisting aid from surro-gates to carry out underhanded tactics in order to minimize or denigrate his opponents.
