Eden Garden Club On October 13, 2015, the Eden Garden Study Club was host to guest speaker David O'Donnell from the Eastern Monarch Butterfly Farm. Mr. O'Donnell presented a pro-gram on the life and behavior of the monarch and its recent major decline due to habitat destruction. Planting butterfly friendly perennials such as the non in-vasive swamp milkweed, (the preferred plant by the Mon-arch) cone flowers, and butterfly weed will help to restore the butterfly population. Pictured is Eden's club ornithol-ogy chair, Susan Stranges and David O'Donnell.

Dear North Collins Residents:
I want to take the time to thank you for your support, your encouraging words
and your votes in the September Democratic Primary for the North Collins Town Council. Although
I was not successful in the primary, I am still very interested in serving on the Town Council. Even though I am
not a lifelong resident of North Collins, I love living here and value this
community and you, the residents. I have spent time and energy on
assisting to find a solution to the water issues in Lawtons, serving on the Celebrate North Collins planning committee, and more importantly
creating a lasting tribute to our Veterans, which is currently being created between the Senior Center
and Fricano Park. I am honest, easy to work with and will get the job done. I am endorsed by the Conservative
Party and will be on the ballot November 3, 2015
on the Conservative line, row 9c. I would like the opportunity to
contribute more and would greatly appreciate your vote.
JAMES LINTThank you again,

Stolen Signs - Thanks A Lot!!To the individual(s) who stole my
campaign signs last weekend – this is despicable and unethical. It is also illegal
and a police report has been filed. The replacement value of the stolen signs is $25.00 each. Each of the six signs were on private property and placed with the
permission of the owner. This is the town of Eden, my lifelong home, and I’d like
to think that we are all for the good of the town, and are above such dirty tricks.

It was a normal distribution Wednesday for the volun-teers at the Eden-North Col-lins Food Pantry on Septem-ber 16, except for a special presentation. The group pre-sented Jim Smith, CEO and President of American Wire Tie in North Collins with a plaque for his donation that could soon find the pantry in a home all its own. Smith has given a one-plus acre tract the company owns on Franklin Street to the pantry for the bargain prices of one dollar. The pan-try plans to erect a dedicated building that will improve its service and offer additional programming possibilities. The Eden-North Collins Food Pantry has only had only two homes since its inception in 2007. Its latest has been Holy Spirit Church in North Collins. While that facility has ample space, its multi-use nature finds pantry volun-teers setting up and taking down their entire set-up each Wednesday they dis-tribute. “It's tough on the volunteers.” said Don Scha-sel, Pantry Director. The Pantry has been look-ing for its own building for several years. A plan to build on Town of North Collins land next to Fricano Park, withered away over the past several years. Schasel kept the plans from the earlier attempt and will du- plicate its features. “All we did was make the building a little longer,” says Schasel. The blueprint he has shows a two-tone, metal building covering approxi-mately 4,300 square feet. “It will have a waiting room, and a storage room,” said Schasel, “Clients will walk through much like going to a food store in making their selections.” Most importantly for Schasel and his group, “We are going to have a lot more storage area than we have here at the church. And, we won't have to set up for every distribution.” The space will also allow the pantry to oper-ate every Wednesday, rather than the current, twice per month.
The extra room will also allow the pantry to meet other needs. “We are actu-ally listed as an emergency food distribution center,” says Schasel, “With the ex-tra space, we will be able to have food on hand if am emergency would strike the community.” Schasel also hopes to bring in nutritionists that can instruct pantry clients on nutritious meal prepara-tion. For now though, the group is focused on getting the building up. “We expect it will cost about $500,000 to complete all of it,” says Schasel, adding, “We're short, we're only about half way there now.” Schasel has been informed that the pantry could be eli-gible for funding from vari-ous area foundations, but he wouldn't complain if com-munity mem- bers joined in the effort as well. “The need for the pantry is only growing,” said Scha-sel, “There are a lot of peo-ple who don't realize they are eligible to receive food here.” Schasel said eligibil-ity continues to rise as the federal poverty line increase, while wages remain stag-nant. And Schasel does not believe anyone should be embarrassed about getting a helping hand when needed. “We give billions away to other countries,” he says, “Why not give some to the people who pay the taxes?” The Pantry is confident
it can find the necessary money to complete its new home. “We've discussed this with the North Collins Vil-lage Board,” said Don, “We will pay for the con- struc-tion, and, when fully paid off, we will give the building to the Village. Then, we will lease it back from them.” Food is obviously the Pan-try's largest expense, but af-filiation with the Food Bank of WNY allows the Pantry to purchase stock for pennies on the pound. “We couldn't run this pantry without grants,” says Schasel. “Last year, we received $34,000. And individual collections and drives make up another component of the Pantry's success. Citing just one example, Schasel tells of a Boy Scout Troop in Hamburg that or-ganized a food collection at an area supermarket, “They collected 700-800 pounds of food for us,” Schasel said. For those wishing to be-come involved with either pantry operations, or to do-nate towards the construc-tion of the new building, Don Schasel may be contact-ed at 992-2884 or 861-4061. You can bet he will be happy to take the call. WITH THANKS- Don and Rosella Schasel, presented a plaque and handshake to Jim Smith, CEO and President of American Wire Tie in North Collins, for providing the land where the Eden-North Collins Food Pantry plans to build its own facility.
