A New Era• David Esquer was named Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball on June 16, 2017. Esquer is the 21st head coach in program history, succeeding Mark Marquess, who retired after 41 years at the helm. • Esquer served as an assistant under Marquess from 1991-96 before spending the past 18 seasons as the head coach at Cal, where he was the 2011 National Coach of the Year and led the Golden Bears to five NCAA Regionals and the 2011 College World Series. • Esquer accrued a 525-46-2 (.528) record at Cal, mentoring 81 Major League draft picks and 13 All-Americans.

Middle Infield Duo• Stanford returns infielders Nico Hoerner and Duke Kinamon, who started all 58 games at shortstop and second base, respectively. • Hoerner was named All-Pac-12 and All-Pac-12 Defensive after leading the team with 77 hits and 18 doubles. An ABCA/Rawlings All-Region second-teamer, Hoerner led the Pac-12 with 52 hits in conference play, finished second on the team with 43 runs, and led the team with 20 multi-hit games. • Kinamon was named All-Pac-12 after finishing third in the Pac-12 with 15 steals and led the Pac-12 with 188 assists, including four errors on 305 chances (.987 fielding percentage).

Weekend Rotation Set• Stanford puts forth a promising rotation against the Titans – Jr. Tristan Beck on Friday, Jr. Kris Bubic on Saturday and So. Erik Miller on Sunday. • Beck was Stanford’s Friday night starter as a freshman in 2016 before missing 2017 due to injury. In 2016, Beck led Cardinal starters in ERA (2.48), strikeouts (76) and was named first-team All-Pac-12 and freshman All-America by Perfect Game/Rawlings, Baseball America and Louisville Slugger. • Bubic was named preseason All-America by D1 Baseball, Baseball America, NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper after leading Stanford starters with a 2.79 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 2017. An All-Pac-12 honorable mention, Bubic was named Cape Cod League Pitcher of the Year in August. • Miller served as Stanford’s midweek starter in 2017, finishing 5-2 with a 3.65 ERA in 61.2 innings. In Miller’s seven Tuesday starts, he posted a 2.05 ERA with Stanford winning all seven contests.

Preseason All-Americans• Hoerner, Bubic and Beck have each collected several preseason All-America honors. • Hoerner picked up second team honors from D1 Baseball and Perfect Game, and third-team honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Baseball America. • Bubic earned third-team recognition from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1 Baseball, Baseball America and the NCBWA.• Beck was named to Perfect Game’s third team.

Who Else is Back?• Other notable returners include Will Matthiessen, Daniel Bakst, Jesse Kuet, Brandon Wulff and Maverick Handley. • Matthiessen returns after posting a 2.33 ERA in 20 relief appearances as a freshman. He allowed 40 baserunners in 38.1 innings pitched with a 32-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. • Bakst appeared in 55 games, primarily as a designated hitter, finishing second on the team with a .311 batting average to go with 38 RBI and a .439 slugging percentage.• Kuet started the final 17 games at shortstop for the Cardinal, with his team-high 12-game hit streak ending in the NCAA Regionals. • Wulff leads all returners with six home runs, starting 44 games as an outfielder in 2017. • Handley finished second on the team with a .395 on-base percentage, while the Cardinal went 28-7 in games he started.
