Heritage Club Activities Days That Matter 8th June, World Ocean Day The 8th of June is celebrated as World Ocean Day to celebrate the beauty, wealth and the promise of the ocean. It is observed to raise awareness and to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean. Oceans are a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On 8 June, 2009, the day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly by its resolution 63/111.

Suggested Activity:
Write a Project Report on WaterBodies-❖ Identify a water body of your
choice.❖ Research and find out about its
origin, course and life state.❖ Find out the aquatic bodies
inhabiting it. Pick one animaland study its movements,patterns and behavior.
❖ Study the quality of the water –is it drinkable or usable.
❖ Find out the causes for itspollution, depletion ordestruction.
❖ The future of our environmentwill depend on our - 'actions'and 'choices'. The report can end with some easy pointers toprotect the environment such as:➔ How to Save Paper?➔ What to do with your leftovers at home?➔ What alternative to plastic to use?➔ How can you save water and electricity at home and in
school?➔ How can you contribute to stop pollution?
Other Activities:➢ Watch an Ocean Film➢ Clean-up Drive on a beach or near a
water body➢ ‘Save our Ocean’ poster making
competition➢ Volunteer or get involved with a local
organisation or institution that works toprotect ocean habitats and marine wildlife to
have a hands-on experience➢ Organise a Water debate to discuss the state of a depleted dirty
water body in your city.➢ Organise an ocean theme-based arts and crafts competition.
