    Within the North American Continentthere exists a very special breed of peopie people who enjoy ice and snowand the unexcelled trails that lead tovirtually every corner of the snowbelt.They enjoy too the comfort of warmclothing the friendliness of companions and the recreational vehicle thatmade it all possible the Ski-Doosnowmobile.We like millions of North American families have never forgotten our pioneer heritage or our love of nature and

    the great outdoors consequently wehave designed and engineered all ourmodels with safety comfort and quietness foremost in our minds. We do respect your desires and that of others.This manual was prepared to acquaintthe owner / operator of a new 97snowmobile with the various vehiclecontrols owner-related maintenanceand safe operating instructions.This is accomplished via two manuals; The Snowmobile Safety Handbookand the Operator Manual . Both areinseparable toward proper use of theproduct and should be kept with thevehicle at all times.

    Each manual emphasizes particular in-formation denoted ytg wording andsymbols;

    WARNING: Identifying an instruction which if no t followedcould cause personal Injury.CAUTION: . otes an instruc-tion whicbi t followed couldseverely damage vehicle components.

    O NOTE: Indicates supplementaryinformation needed to fully com-plete an instruction.

    Although the mere reading of such information does not eliminate the hazard. your understanding of the infermation will promote its correct use.Ride safe and have fun.

    Use concentrated Ski-Doo oil availablefrom your dealer. This type of oil hasspecially formulated oil bases to meetthe lubrication requirements of the

    Bombardier-Rotax engine._ CAUTION: Never use outboard or straight mineral oils.

    Oil must be added to the gasoline inpre-measured amounts then both oiland gasoline should be thoroughly

    mixed together before fueling the tank. ~ o m m n G O ~ i n

    Refer to the following chart to selectthe correct gasoline grade

    With Ski-Doo snowmobile engines, abreak-in period is required before running the vehicle at full throttle. Manu

    facturers, recommendation for theBornbardier-Rotax engine is 10 to 15operating hours. During this period, aricher mixture is needed i.e, 4 parts ofgas for 1 part of 5 0 / 1 Ski-Doo oil .Maximun throttle should not exceed3 4 however, brief full accelerationand speed variations contribute to a oo break-in. Continued wide open

    throttle accelerations, prolonged cruising speeds, and lugging are detrimental during the break-in period.

    After the break-in period, each SkiDoo snowmobile must have an inspection check. This inspection is at the expense of the vehicle owner.

    u ~ iM b r t u r ~RoIrtffio

    The importance of using the correct fu-el mixture cannot be overstressed. Anincorrect fuel ratio results in serious engine damage. Recommended fuel ratiois 5 0 / 1

    5 gallons recommended gasoline plus 1can of 5 1 concentrated Ski-Doo oil::correct fuel mixture.

    O NOTE: To facilitate fuel mixing,oil should be kept at room temperature.

    10/40

    To mix the gasoline and oil always usea separate clean container. Never mixdirectly in your snowmobile tank. Forbest results acquire tw o containers either plastic or metal. Draw from oneuntil empty then use the second one.

    WARNING: Gasoline is flammable and explosive under certainconditions. Always perform procedures in a weI ventilated area.Do not smoke or allow open

    flames or sparks in the vicinity. Ifgasoline fumes are noticed whiledriving the cause should be determined and corrected withoutdelay. Never add fuel while engine is running. Avoid skin contactwith fuel at below freezing temperatures.

    1 Pour approximately one gallon ofgasoline into a dean container.

    2. Add the full amount of concentratedSki-Doo oil.

    3. Replace container cap and shakethe container thoroughly.

    4. Add the remainder of the gasoline.5. Once again thoroughly agitate the

    7. Allow the engine to warm beforeoperating at full throttle.

    Under certain climatic conditions, the

    track and skis of a snowmobile left out-doors may freeze to theground or snow surface. Always makeSUrf that the track and skis a re free be-fore attempting to start the vehicle. This procedure will eliminate unneces-sary drive belt wear .

    Check of steering mecha-nism by moving skis hand from sideto side. If roughness or binding is felt ,check for ice of snow that may beblockinq the mechanism.

    and release control levers se-veral times to check that they operate

    and smoothly. The throttle levershould return to the idle position whenreleased. The brake should fully applybefore the brake control lever touchesthe handlebar grip. If the control leversdo not operate freely do no t start yourvehicle, see your dealer.

    WARNING: Throttle and brakemechanisms should be checked
