GOING GREEN
When it comes to environmentally friendly, ethically sound tourism, South Africa is a trailblaz-ing country. Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (www.fairtourismsa.org.za), the first such scheme established worldwide, has members located from Cape Town to just south of the Zimbabwean border. The index below features a range of ecotourist accommodation and activities, including gardens and reserves, lodges and hostels, tour operators, and even an award-winning winery with a carbon-negative footprint. However, the list extends beyond the traditional definition of ‘green’. In addition to the listings with an environmental slant, we have included all sorts of sustainable options that focus on areas such as developing the local community, educating local children, and bringing business to local craftspeople and guides. We have bolstered our coverage of community-run accommodation, in response to readers’ concerns that such options sometimes lost out to backpacker hostels. For ‘green’ activities such as cycling, hiking, all national parks and train travel, see the regular index.
Sustainable tourism is an ongoing initiative, so please let us know what you think of our cover-age via www.lonelyplanet.com/contact; for more information visit www.lonelyplanet.com/about/responsible-travel.
