Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

Readings for the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20
The book od Wisdom was written about 50 years before Christ, and was addressed to a group of Jews living in Alexandria, Egypt. In this pagan environment, some were tempted to abandon their religious beliefs and practices. In today’s passage, an unidentified person, referred to as the “just one”, challenges them to remain faithful to their traditional values. Early Christians thought this person sounded a lot like Jesus.
Second Reading: James 3: 16-4:3
Today we continue a series of readings from the letter of James. This part of the letter deals with sins that threaten harmony in a Christian community.
Father Rick’s Reflections . . . Do you ever think about having servants? Many of us probably never do. Yet, it is easy to forget about the grocery store clerks or the janitors or the workers who harvest our strawberries and fill the potholes on our roads. We have lots of servants, but since we don’t usually hire
them directly, we rarely take note of them. But, in the past couple of weeks, we have heard Jesus talk a lot about servants and how he was called to be one. Today, Jesus has an opportunity to talk just with his disciples. Knowing their expectations for greatness, he explained for a second time that he was going to be betrayed, killed and then rise to new life. His companions responded with silence. No questions, no sympathy, no protest. Maybe, they were shaking their heads hoping that he’d come to his senses when they finally sat down in the shade. Once he was out of hearing distance, they got into a lively discussion on their own. When Jesus asks them what they had been arguing about along the way, they again took refuge in silence. So, again, Jesus had to explain himself. Jesus tells them that he would be taken by force but not respond in kind. They were reduced to silence. He tried to explain his reasoning, but they couldn’t understand it. If Jesus had wanted fame and fortune, wouldn’t he have been better off catering to the powerful? Instead, the powerful were precisely the ones who were threatened by him and his attention to the outcasts and unnoticed. Jesus kept telling the disciples, “If you want to be great, look to God who has handed creation over to mere human beings. Think about it! Who is most important in society? Do emperors, generals and religious leaders surpass the importance of mothers? Whose role is truly indispensable – not to mention life-giving?” Jesus’ way of thinking was just too different. So, when the words didn’t suffice, he picked up a child to show his disciples what it looks like to be in first place in the reign of God. Why a child? Perhaps that like the child, they had been chosen not for their importance or even their potential, but because they were loved. Their mission was not to perform mighty works, but to receive the little ones, the needy, the forgotten and the rejected. Their mission was to share the love they had been given so freely. They were called to the humble, humbling service of embracing the little people just as Jesus did. Picking up the child, Jesus was performing a living parable – teaching that loving someone is the greatest service you can do them; everything else flows from that and nothing else is valuable without it.
We are still taking nominations for membership on our Pastoral Council. The Pastoral Council is an advisory and consultative board to the pastor to help discern where God is calling us as a parish community. We are looking for three new members – 2 to serve three-year terms and one to finish the term of a member who had to resign. Pray for those who will be nominated. We are starting up Theology on Tap for the fall with our first session this Wednesday, September 26. This year, because of the rising expenses, we have decided to shift the evenings to one of our local parishes. This week, we gather at Holy Spirit Parish with Fr Bob Byrne talking about “10 Myths of Catholic Morality.” After a brief talk, there will be time for questions and answers. Beer, wine and pizza will be available. Plan on joining us starting at 7 pm. I would encourage everyone to continue to offer prayers for our bishop, our diocese and our Church. We continue to walk through the present crisis, asking God for guidance and healing. As we all know, our bishop went through treatment for non-small cell lung cancer in the spring and was into immunotherapy as part of his treatment. It seems the present course has not been the best for him. He is back on another round of stronger chemo after they removed about a gallon of fluid that was surrounding his lungs. He has greatly reduced his schedule so that he can concentrate on the cancer fight. When he was first diagnosed, his doctor told him to “avoid stress.” With the present state of the Church, that is really a major challenge. There is a rumor going around that I have a birthday this week. Well, yes, it is true, but I think I’m going to start getting younger in my age. Someone once said, “Age is just a number.” Just continue to keep me and our Church in your prayers. I truly believe that we, as a Church, will be stronger. Remember, the cross is our sign of life and freedom. I am reminded what I learned long ago – the Church is “a divinely inspired, human institution.” As a human institution, we make mistakes along the way, but God keeps calling us forward. Seeking men/women to serve as hosts/hostesses for catered parish funeral luncheons.
Time commitment would be 2-2 1/2 hours. Job duties: greeting family, assisting with elevator and light clean up following meal.

Parent Baptism Preparation Class
The preparation class will be Monday, October 8 at 7:00 PM in the Church. Please contact the Parish Office to register.
Baptisms are held on the first weekend of the month. Parents are required to attend the preparation session and should be registered St. Thomas Aquinas parishioners attending Mass regularly.

PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY RALLY
The Knights of Columbus, Father Nouvel Council #4232, in Saginaw, will host a Public Square Rosary Rally at Noon on October 13th at its Social Hall at 4840 Shattuck Rd.
The Rally is part of the “America Needs Fatima” campaign to petition Our Lady for prayers of national conversion from immoral and secularist trends of our society.
21,570 Public Square Rosary Rallies took place here in America in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, Portugal. These Rosary Rallies all across America were a unanimous prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the conversion of America

Right To Life Month
The 40 Days for Life effort begin on September 26th and lasts through November 4th. You can protect mothers and children by joining this worldwide mobilization! Through prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils and community outreach, 40 Days for Life has inspired 750,000 volunteers!
Please consider participating and praying a vigil outside the Women's Center of Saginaw, 3099 Cabaret Trail South, Saginaw, in adjoining parking lot for one or more hours each week during these 40 days, and spread the word to others about this important life saving effort. Vigil hours 7:00 AM-7:00 PM daily.

What is Ministry Enrichment Day?
Ministry Enrichment Day is an opportunity to expand your understand-
ing of ministry and learn new ways of reaching out to those in need of
Christ’s loving touch. The day includes a keynote address by Joe Pap-
rocki, DMin., National Consultant for Faith Formation for Loyola Press.
He will discuss “How a Church on the Move Engages the World,” and
will challenge us, in the words of Pope Francis, to go out to the world
and encounter people “at the peripheries.” The surest way for a church
to die is to turn its focus inward on itself and its own needs. A Church
“on the move” shifts its focus outward and seeks to bring the Good
News of Jesus and the nearness of God to those who are experiencing
brokenness, emptiness, despair and lack of direction in their lives.
Breakout session topics include How a Church on the Move Functions,
Worships and Forms Disciples in Faith, Dealing with Difficult People,
Funeral Vigils and Committals, The Kerygma, Celebrating with Music,
and more. We conclude the day with Mass, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Ministry Enrichment Day is part of the Sixth Lay Ministry Assembly,
whose theme is “Who Do You Say that I Am?”
