PARISH STEWARDSHIP
Seeing Jesus transfigured made Peter want to do something to mark the event. But the voice from the cloud said clearly that the first task of those who recognize Jesus as Lord is to listen to Jesus - and then act!
Our financial stewardship to St. Thomas Aquinas for the weekend of July 28, 2019 will be reported in next weekends bulletin.

Readings for The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23
Ecclesiastes is one of the seven books in the Old Testament referred to as Wisdom books. Wisdom literature reflects on how to live in this world in a way that is pleasing to God. The author of this book calls himself Qoheleth, a term that perhaps means “teacher”. Qoheleth has a pessimistic view of life, in part because he doesn’t believe in life after death. The wisdom he teaches is that one should not be burdened by anxieties, but rather live each day as a gift from God. Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11
In our previous readings from Colossians, we have seen how Christ is the only mediator between God and the world, and how our baptism has made us one with Christ. The author will today remind us of the heights to which Christ has raised us, and then call upon us to live up to this.
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
8:30 AM Mass
Thursday, August 15
Father Rick’s Reflections . . . We are familiar with the teachings of Jesus. Some questions that come to mind when I think of them – What would we have considered the most popular topics that Jesus addressed? What are the most popular topics we heard about
today in our churches? Are the two related? Do the priorities of Jesus and his preaching align with preaching we hear at the parish? Interestingly, some of the issues that Jesus addressed more than others were about money and the right use of it. He rarely addressed issues concerning buildings of worship, parish schools, sexuality, LGBTQ, or even contraception. Jesus preached often about how people use their money. Today, we have two cases in point. The first story is about someone who wants his share of the inheritance. Rather than get in the middle of that quagmire, he gives a quick aphorism that’s appropriate for both Christian and non-Christian alike: “One’s life does not consist of possessions.” This teaching reflects certain schools of Greek philosophy and, even, modern sense. The second story is called the parable of the rich fool. God addresses the rich man as “You fool” for he spent his time on earth acquiring a bountiful harvest, a “treasure for himself.” But that very night he will die, not “rich in what matters to God.” Here it is clear that bountiful harvests, storehouses, and great material blessings are not what matters to God. The parable calls us to reconsider our own harvests and storehouses. What are we acquiring and for what purpose? “One’s life does not consist of possessions.” The lessons is so clear that we need to be reminded of it again and again. As a preacher, I would do well to echo themes introduced by Jesus himself. All other issues will naturally fall in line. How we spend our money says a great deal about us as human beings. Our values, priorities and interests are all expressed by the way we spend money.
It’s hard to believe that we are into August already. Soon school will be starting, and everyone’s lives will become very busy. Just a reminder that August 15 is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, our diocesan feast day. We will have only one mass at 8:30 am that day. I will try and gather the times for our neighboring parishes. Even though this is for early August, I am writing these words at the end of July after my vacation and before the installation of our new bishop. (Had to work around the parish staff’s vacations as well.). We have much to celebrate and pray for. We continue to ask God’s Spirit to guide us as we begin our new journey with Bishop Gruss as our bishop. Let us also pray for the Diocese of Rapid City as they await the naming of a new bishop for them. Have a great week.

A PRAYER FOR OUR NEW BISHOP
O God, eternal shepherd of the faithful, look favorably on your servant,
Bishop Gruss, whom you have set at the head
of your Church of Saginaw
as her shepherd; grant, we pray, that by word and example
he may be of service to those
over whom he presides, so that, together with the flock
entrusted to his care, he may come to everlasting life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit , one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Brothers and sisters, let us begin to serve the Lord, for until now, we have done very little.
