Our basic needs are the same, but some of our cultural values vary because of history and location.

Similarities and Differences

• Education is valued and teachers are respected

• Guests are often treated with food

• Art, music and literature are all important in the different cultures

• “Saving face” is important in China and Vietnam

• Anything of nutritional value is considered food

• Members of the same sex might hold hands in public, but not men and women

Students will view a picture each day with a caption, and they will have to decide if the picture is from far-away destinations such as China or Vietnam, or if it was taken in their city of residence -- Raleigh.

This will make them realize the Western influences present in Asia, as well as the Asian influences in their hometown.
