City staged a fine comeback to get the better of Bohemians as fast goals from Danny Furlong and Daryl Horgan turned the game on its head to give Tommy Dunne’s side all three points at Turner’s Cross. It was a big improvement from last Sunday’s icy 0-0 draw with Limerick at Thomond Park as the Leesiders opened their home league programme with an excit- ing victory. “We had to play well to win the game and it will be no different up in Bray on Tuesday night and again at home to Derry City to- morrow week,” said Dunne. City now have four from a pos- sible six points after two games and a win on the road early next week will set things up nicely for the visit of the Candy Stripes in eight days time. City’s U19s are in league action at Bishopstown today (3.30pm) where a win over UCD will give them back-to-back titles and part one of a possible double, double. City will have midfield ace Alan Browne back from Schools Inter- national duty in Derry to play in the league clincher thanks to Cobh Ramblers’ Kynan Rocks’ father who drove both young footballers back from Foyleside late last night. SOCCER By NOEL SPILLANE Shane geared up for final showdown RETIREMENT could be put on hold for UCC Demons captain Shane Coughlan as his team get ready for next week’s Na- tional Champions Trophy final against DCU Saints at the national basketball arena, Before a capacity at- tendance at the Mardyke Arena last night, Demons defeated Bord Gais Nep- tune 79-74. Coughlan has hinted about retirement in recent weeks and after winning two SuperLeague titles and four National Cup medals the hunger for more success is still very much on the agenda for the stalwart. “I suppose it has been one of the hardest sea- sons I have encountered in recent years, but look that’s for another day and the most important thing for me now is to try and lead our team to victory in the next week’s final,” Coughlan said. “To criticise players is very easy for the hurlers on the ditch but this present Demons squad deserve a lot of credit and the reality is we were unlucky not to win the league and I do not mean any disrespect to UL Eagles who eventually won the title.” Coughlan is adamant that a win would be fitting end to what has been a tough season with many hurdles and obstacles to overcome. “The camaraderie in the squad is excellent and hopefully we can fin- ish our season with a win over DCU Saints but we will have to be ready for the mother of all battles. “When you play DCU if you fail to match them in the physicality stakes you are on a loser because they consistently play on the edge. “The only advice I can give my fellow players is to be ready and don’t be afraid as we have the scoring power to unsettle them and hopefully things will go to plan for us.” See P52 for more.
