EE - V1 Hull to sign loan star Meyler SPORT Evening Echo Carrigaline long puck picture special: P48, 49 Cork GAA stalwarts pass away GAA CORK GAA is today mourn- ing the death of Joe Mc- Grath, who coached county teams in football and hurl- ing and who also steered Blackrock to All-Ireland glory in the 1970s. He was joint coach with Eamon Ryan when Cork defeated Kerry by a point in the 1983 Munster fi- nal with Tadhg Murphy’s famous late goal proving decisive. And five years later the Down native coached Cork to the All-Ire- land U21 hurling title, defeating Kilkenny by 4-11 to 1-5 in the fi- nal. He was also very involved in set- ting up coaching structures at na- tional level and was one of the first full-time coaching officers in Cork under the Carrigdhoun banner. The McGrath Cup, which starts at the weekend, was his brainchild back in 1981 for the promotion of football in Munster. CIT host Cork in a first round game on Sunday at 2pm. The stu- dents are gearing up for first round Sigerson Cup tie at home to GMIT, but they’ll be missing Ciarán Sheehan, who is on holi- days. Meanwhile, Fermoy stalwart Jimmy Dennigan has also passed away. He was one of the leading inter-county football referees in the 1970s and 80s, handling the 1986 All-Ireland final between Kerry and Tyrone. Goals from Pat Spillane and Ger Power helped Kerry win 2-15 to 1-10 claim the last of five titles in the 1980s. GAA stalwarts Joe McGrath, left, and Jimmy Dennigan passed away. DAVID Meyler’s brilliant form for Hull City in their push towards of the top of the Championship will see the midfielder make a perman- ent switch from Sunderland this week. The former Cork City midfielder scored three goals in recent weeks for Hull, and played the full 90 minutes in their 0-0 draw away to Blackpool yesterday, which sees them consolidate second in the table in an automatic promotion slot, but seven points off leaders Cardiff. The deal for Meyler’s move will rise to €1.8 million including add-ons, quite a profit for Sunder- land who paid just €120,000 to Cork City in July 2008 when Roy Keane was in charge. The 23-year-old initially made his mark with the Black Cats under Steve Bruce, who is now at the helm in Hull, and his debut was against Blackburn in December 2009. However two successive cru- ciate knee injuries stinted his pro- gress, and he hasn’t been able to break into the team under Martin O’Neill. The son of former Blackrock hurl- er and Wexford native John, David will be hoping regular games for Hull will further his claims for a reg- ular spot in the Ireland squad, after his first appearance against Oman last September. Meyler could be joined full-time at Hull by precocious Dublin winger Robbie Brady. Bruce yesterday also tabled a bid to secure the 20-year-old services from Man United after excelling on loan last season and in recent months. ● `See P52, 53 for more.
