WEDNESDAY EARLY EDITION 30 NOV 2011 State of the Program Speech Graphs Growth On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the 55th State Assembly began with the State of the Program from Youth Governor Glory McClure. McClure addressed the monumental accomplishments and challenges that the Youth In Government program has endured in its 55 years. Governor McClure emphasized the service activities and programs that YIG and the YMCA have planned and executed. These service projects include Valentines for Veterans and Healthy Kids’ Day, a YMCA event planned for April of this year. These service projects are sure to show a great face of Youth In Government and McClure is more than happy to promote them to local media sources, and motivate chapters to promote their own projects. McClure p l a c e d importance on the fact that it is no longer enough to simply learn about democracy. Delegates must also utilize their knowledge to “stay informed and stay involved.” McClure said that, “if you choose to solely attend State Assembly, you are only scratching the surface of what this program has to offer.” All YIG chapters should talk to their local Y’s about local and state service projects. McClure is proud and excited that one of the many changes this year is the addition of five new chapters. “So many of our new chapters have been really involved.” Several Supporting Officers are from the new chapters. Though the changes this year have been stressful, McClure is “so, so thrilled with how everyone has handled [them].” BY CAT SMITH Editorial Board First time State Assembly attendees stand to be recognized, both advisors and delgates. Some changes that have taken place this year can be found in the Bill Book, and have been influencing delegates throughout the program year. Among these include the requirement of having a lobbyist, the opening of submissions to The Page Note, and the ability to apply for an alternate position to the Conference on National Affairs. It is now required that all legislative delegates who have their bill on the docket and wish to continue to the cabinet have a lobbyist to support them. Lobbyists are only taking clients until 9 a.m. this morning. For those interested in journalism and reporting, the Press Corps. is accepting open submissions for the program’s blog, The Page Note.
