She is well regarded in Victoria but also shares best practice from an international perspective. PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WORKING TOGETHER In the last week of term parents received a half year report on their child’s/children’s progress following the departmental guidelines. This report provided a snapshot in time of your child’s achievements as well as what the school and you the parent can do to support your child’s future learning. Reporting to parents is a very important part of our program and your child’s education. It is an opportunity to discuss your child’s strengths and work together with the teacher on areas of concern. Taking an active interest in your child’s education is a great step in ensuring your child’s success at school. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
GROWING WITH THE COMMUNITY
We are here to support the academic, social and
emotional development of our students to be resilient
to the challenges of a rapidly changing society.
OUR TEACHERS’ COMMITMENT TO GROWING AND LEARNING TOGETHER. The commitment of our staff to grow and learn together professionally is an attribute of which I am very proud. Throughout each year, they commit many hours of school and personal time to their professional learning to meet their individual goals and priorities as well as to support the school focus of ensuring teaching and learning is personalised to the needs of our students as 21st century learners. Last week our team leaders again spent time with Lyn Watts, an Educational Consultant who has worked closely with us for a number of years. Priorities for us are focusing on effective use of purposeful assessment, collaborative teaching and learning techniques and working together to more closely match the needs, aspirations and interests of students so they become better learners, broadening the range of skills and strategies that students can use to become more independent learners. We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible at our parent teacher interviews to be held on
Wednesday 7th August. All families should have received a notice in relation to this last week. Spare copies are available at the office should they be needed. One form needs to be completed per family. UPCOMING SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS I am pleased to let you know that I am in the process of finalising quotes to commence the tiered seating area of the design below in the space between the hall and the existing shaded area, pre-viously occupied by a portable classroom. Such a large project wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful support of our PFA and with CPS families generously supporting the fundraising efforts of the school. Once this section is completed we will work towards shading this area. There are still a few boxes to be ticked but I very much look forward to seeing the first stage of these plans come to fruition over the coming months. This work will certainly enhance our outside teaching and learning environment. WHOLE SCHOOL SWIMMING PROGRAM Planning is under way to ensure we have a highly successful swimming program at GESAC over ten days commencing on Monday, August 12th. This is, as always, a large undertaking and we ask for your cooperation in supporting Mr Champion and the GESAC staff to ensure each session runs smoothly. The viability of the program relies on the involvement of the overwhelming majority of our students so we do ask you to please get behind it. While the main aim of our school swimming program is to develop water safety capabilities and awareness in all students, especially those with limited experience in the water, the program offers excellent instruction in stroke development and swimming techniques for all students at their point of need. There is a ratio of 1:6 in each group and the lessons are good value considering the cost is about half that of out of school group swimming lessons. All children are bound to make good progress whilst having a fun, social experience as well. It is another great opportunity for children to develop independence and responsibility, taking care of themselves and their belongings. Once again, we welcome parents coming to GESAC to observe the program but we respectfully ask, on behalf of GESAC management, that parents remain seated in the areas allocated during lessons and refrain from communicating with pool staff. They take their responsibility seriously to group our students appropriately and to regularly review these placements. Mr Champion will be in attendance at the pool throughout the program and any questions about the lessons must go through him. He will ensure our program runs smoothly and that any queries are dealt with in a timely and informed manner. Please give him all the encouragement a PE teacher spending two weeks on the pool deck would need!!!! OPTIONAL ICAS TESTS Our next ICAS test being offered is in English and will be conducted this Friday. Those Grade 2 students sitting the test will be called at 10am and grades 3 to 6 students at 11:30am. This is the first time the tests have been offered to grade 2s. The University of New South Wales coordinate these tests to allow students to compare their results to other students in the state and to receive appropriate certificates, including participation, credit, distinction and
high distinction. We conduct the tests to provide this choice to parents. However, we do not use these results at all as part of our assessment schedule and we do not prepare students for these tests in any way. HEAD LICE ALERT Even though the term has just begun, we have again had several incidences of head lice in the school recently. Please check your child’s hair regularly and treat it if necessary. A head lice treatment fact sheet is available at the office. It would be appreciated if girls tied their hair back in a ponytail or plait to minimize the risk of spreading from person to person. WORDS OF WISDOM –
A smile is one of the most simple, silent statements
Linda Jones & Michael McCarthy Grose Presentations PERSISTENCE VS INTELLIGENCE - Parenting ideas by Michael Grose, Parent Educator Imagine at the birth of your child you are given a choice between bestowing great intelligence or great persistence on your baby. Which would you choose? Take your time and think about it! Your choice will make a profound difference. It will impact heavily on your child’s success at school and their future achievements - Smarts or persistence? What would you choose? If you chose persistence then you are on the money. You are giving your child a significant leg-up for future success. This is the finding of the ground-breaking research into factors determining children’s achievement levels by Professor Charles Desforges from the University of Exeter in the UK. Desforges found that the greatest individual characteristic that determined children’s success at school was persistence. It was number one by far. In fact, persistence was a staggering seven times more significant than intelligence as a determinant of a child’s achievement. The good news is that persistence is not merely an inborn trait. It is the one aspect of a child’s temperament that can be impacted by people. Desforges found that parents, rather than teachers, are the people most likely to impact on a child’s persistence. This is consistent with many other studies in the area.

What does a persistent child do? Persistent kids do some or all of the following:
They stick at tasks until the end.
They set goals and work toward them.
They are not easily distracted.
They don’t let failure stop them.
They are more likely to take risks as
learners.
They can sometimes be seen as stubborn
or unwilling to bend There are heaps of ways you can encourage your child to persist. But the BIG strategies all revolve around MODELLING, ENCOURAGEMENT and VOCABULARY. As a parent think how you: 1. Model persistence on a daily basis so your
child sees what persistence is 2. Actively foster and promote persistence so
your child sees it is possible 3. Develop a set of words and phrases about
persistence that your child hears routinely so that persistence becomes part of your child’s frame of reference.
4. Make a fuss when your child sticks at a task regardless of their success so they know it is valued.

Educational Consulting
‘Recognise. Recode. Reset.’
One teacher’s passionate dedication to unlocking the learning potential in all, led to the development of ‘The Triple R System’.
This is NOT tutoring. This unique system Identifies specific learning blocks and provides concrete solu-
tions. On average, a learning block is reset within 8 sessions.
The Triple R System is a unique approach to learning that allows children to suc-ceed by understanding how they, as individuals, need to ‘recode’ information to
achieve a genuine understanding of key concepts.
