46th EDSA Meeting Report

August 22nd -28th 2010

Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The 46th EDSA Meeting and 36th Annual ADEE Meeting entitled “Digital Dentistry” took place in

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, between the 22nd - 28th August 2010. There were 99 students present at the

EDSA Meeting from 40 dental schools, 15 full member countries and 7 observers. Local organizing

committee made great efforts to promote the event and prepare the event to remember.

During the meeting, EDSA welcomed special guests:

GABA invited speaker, Ms. Dagmar E. Slot who lectured on interdental cleaning and halitosis

Dr. Korkud Demirel, president of the European Federation of Periodontology

ADEE (Association for Dental Education in Europe) representatives

As a results of EDSA cooperation

with other student organizations, Mr.

American Student Dental Association

(ASDA) was present. There were

further discussions about

collaboration on Research

externships and volunteer missions

between the ASDA and EDSA.

The meeting was supported by EDSA sponsors:

Colgate, GC, W&H and Planmeca. Students had a

chance to participate in two workshops, Simodont

dental trainer (Moog ) and Oral scanner (3M ESPE)

making preparations on virtual teeth and taking digital

impressions for dental restorations.

We also use this opportunity to welcome new members

to our big family, Timisoara Dental Student’s

Association and Liga Studentilor Targu Mures, both

from Romania, and we would also like to thank our

seven observer countries for joining the meeting, with our best wishes that they will soon become active

and full members of the association.

As usual, every year we thank to all the members that have been part of EDSA for long period of time and

to honour them in a way they deserve, due to their dedication to our organization and mutual friendship.

New EDSA Alumni members are Lucy Monk (United Kingdom), Ioannis Zogakis (Greece), Mortada Jaber

(Sweden) and Nikola Molnar is a new Honorary Lifetime Member.

Discussions about current EDSA projects and workgroups were held.

EDSA partneship: we decided to expand partnership database we already have and continue cooperation

with our contacts from IADR meeting. different strategies were discussed and future contact plans were

made.

EDSA Prevention: Leeds accepted continuation of the SM!LE project, which is going to be coordinated by

Imogen Bexfield. We established again contacts with P&G and arranged other dates for the pilot version of

the programme.

EDSA Finance: Budget for the next six months was made with estimated costs of all our incomes and

outcomes. We agreed on percentage of our spendings and established the way budget will be made in the

EDSA Students' Research Program's is a new project aiming to promote research activities among dental

students and create for each academic year a database of schools, companies, institutions partners who

can offer research and additional educational opportunities for students who are interested in developing

their skills in an international setting. Collaboration is planned among European and American dental

schools as well as with International Association for Dental Research and dental companies.

EDSA Volunteer Work: In collaboration with YMCA Southwest Branch Cameroon, EDSA is setting up a

volunteer work project to provide dental care for unprivileged people of the Southwest Cameroon in

summer 2011. So far more than 100 dentists and students applied for participation in the mission and

EDSA is working on seeking donators and ensuring necessary quantities of dental materials, instruments,

protective equipment and mobile dental chairs.

EDSA Dental Guide: Upon completion of production of the printed publication, the new, online interactive

version of the Dental Guide Manual will be launched. The new, digital manual will be connected with social

networks and should facilitate networking among dental students and professionals.

The new EDSA Annual Project Theme will be “Research and its impact on dental education”. Participants

of the group agreed on creating and distributing among dental students and teachers a printed

questionnaire covering important aspects of research as a part of dental education. Project will be

conducted at several European dental schools and presented at the ADEE 2011 Annual Meeting in Turkey.











After participating in the German version of the Meisinger training course in oral surgery in 2009, EDSA

arranged for the first time the training course in English for all European dental students. The hands-on

training is organised in collaboration with German MFF and Meisinger company at Seebruck am

Chiemsee, Germany. All places were taken only few days after announcing the event. Therefore, EDSA is

already working on arranging dates for trainings in 2011.

Last but not least, elections for the new EDSA Board were held. New officers of EDSA Executive

Committee for 2010/2011 are:

Treasurer: Diarmuid Coffey (Ireland)

New officers were also appointed: EDSA Prevention and Volunteer work Officer, Cristina Balan, EDSA

Scientific Officer, Elpida Samara, EDSA Partnership Officer, Danilo Arsenijevic, and EVP Officer,

Panagiota Sakellariou.

The new executive committee decided not to send a representative to the FDI Congress in Salvador, Brazil

in September this year due to high expenses . EDSA will participate in the next FDI Congress in 2011.
