In a bid to ‘green’ the area, the local municipal authority decided to plant the trees at intervals along a stretch of pavement in a busy roadside location. The trees were deposited in a mixture of soil and VYDRO ® substrate: 2kg of soil mixed with 20-30% VYDRO ® flakes per tree. Using VYDRO ® flakes dramatically improves the ability of soil to retain water. This means plants and trees are more likely to survive during prolonged dry periods, and the need for irrigation is greatly reduced – a major benefit in areas such as Yeongdeungpo, where there is no proactive tree management program in place. VYDRO ® substrate was originally invented to transform the installation of green roofs and living walls, but the technology works equally well in landscaping projects – particularly in hot, dry countries where water is often in short supply.
