Advent Litany and Gathering Rite
Composer NotesCreator of the Stars of Night, “Conditor alme siderum” (Latin, 9th century, Mode IV), is one ofthe office hymns from the ninth century used at vespers during Advent. While found in the Romanbreviary, its roots are in the Sarum breviary used in Britain after its inception in the ninth or tenthcentury. This is a good example of chant as it has a narrow range (eight notes) and one note persyllable. The translation is attributed to John Mason Neale (1818–1866).
The inspiration for this setting came as I was walking back to my hotel following the HolyThursday liturgy at St. James Cathedral in Seattle, Washington in 2006. On this beautiful clearnight in the Pacific Northwest, with the melody of the “Pange Lingua Gloriosi” ringing in myhead, I looked up to see the sky filled with a plethora of stars and instantly began humming the“Conditor alme siderum.” This unexpected seasonal shift at the beginning of the Paschal Triduumopened me up once again to the many aspects of the Paschal Mystery that are continually revealedto us as we make the yearly pilgrimage of climbing the holy mountain of Easter.
The handbell and chant opening by the choir can be used as a call to worship for the Adventseason. Consider placing your choir around the baptismal font or in the gathering space for thisopening. Then, as the organ introduction begins, form a holy procession with the choir and otherministers.
The verses are based on the texts found in the Sunday Gospels of the Advent season. Note that theverses are in a “Gelineau-style,” the style of the performance of the psalms employed by the lateJesuit Father Joseph Gelineau (1921-2008). The piece may continue with the sign of the cross, greeting, penitential act and Kyrie, with texts as found in the current Roman Missal, or it maystand alone as a processional chant for the entrance procession.
