Performance NotesHere I Am, Lord is simultaneously a hymn of God’s compassion and of Christian ministry, makingit appropriate for vow profession, ordination, and commissioning liturgies. Its length and moodmake it an effective communion meditation song.
The song does take a bit of practice to perform well. We find that the refrain is very easy forcongregations to learn. The verses should be sung by a soloist if at all possible; this enables thedialogue between the Lord (verses) and his people (refrain) to unfold without confusion. Anoptional vocal harmony part has been provided for verse 3; if this is used, it should be sung by asingle voice or small group of voices with the same timbre as that of the soloist singing the versemelody (i.e. women singing with a woman soloist).
The guitar accompaniment is the most difficult element of this piece. The chords with complicatednames actually involve simple fingerings that have been moved to different fret positions. Fingerpicking, while it may take some practice, greatly enhances the effectiveness of the song. The styleand mood of this hymn suggest that it should not be strummed, since it would make theaccompaniment too heavy.
