Summer Reading List Dear Parents/Guardians of Rising 3rd Graders, Welcome to Third Grade! It is extremely important that your child continues reading over the summer so that he/she does not experience the “summer setback” when they return in the fall. Research shows that the best way to become better readers is to spend time reading. Below are the novels each third grader should read this summer along with activities to complete. The first novel “Donavan’s Word Jar” is a novel that all third graders must read and complete the activity for. The second novel is student choice. Students must choose one novel from the list to read and complete the attached book report or Comprehension Packet. Students are free to read more than one novel from the student choice list. All assignments will be graded and used during the 1st week of school. Thank You, 3rd Grade ELA

Donavan’s Word Jar – Tic Tac Toe Menu
Directions: Complete the three questions of your choice to make Tic Tac Toe. Circle the questions you chose to answer. Answer them in complete sentences (restate) on the back of this page. 1. What is Donavan’s problem in this story? How does the problem get solved?
2. You have to give an exciting word to Donavan to put it in his jar. It has to describe you. What word would you put in and why?
3. Choose one character from the story that you found interesting. Write about what you found interesting and why.
4. Donavan’s hobby is collecting words. What is your hobby? What do you like about it? How did you start that hobby?
5. How does Donavan react to people taking his words? How do his feelings change as he watches what is happening?
6. Thus suffix “ful” means “full of.” Like the word beautiful means “full of beauty”. Write five “ful” words and their meanings.
7. Describe a connection you made to the story (something that made you relate to a character or event). What happened in the story to make you make that connection?
8. Compare the illustration on pg 61 with the one on pg 69. What change does the author show?
9. One of Donavan’s word in “bamboozle.” What does that word mean? Write a sentence using this word.
