A recent television program featured Sir David Attenborough holding a baby leather-back turtle between his thumb and forefinger, its front flippers thrashing the air as it instinctively tried to make its way to the safety of the ocean. Sir David has 32 honorary degrees from British universities, including an honorary Doctor of Science from Cambridge, but what inspires most admira- tion is his undeniable com- mitment to preserve the world’s flora and fauna. The little turtle was never in any danger and Sir David was only imparting an im- portant message about the perils faced by the species. His is a voice for the voice- less, a voice of concern and reason about the prolifera- tion of plastic in our oceans that is killing seals, alba- tross and other sea creatures and the coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef caused by global warming. …….. But we too, as Christians, are called to do God’s work. Moses, the great Jewish prophet (Deut:10), longed that all God’s people be prophets anointed by the Spirit (Num 11:29). Today, the psalmist has some special things to say about this divine Word; it is of infi- nite value, sweeter than honey, worth more than gold. (19:10-12) But how many Chris- tians facilitate God’s Word in their every- day deeds and actions? Being a prophet is no easy task. It takes courage. It is often the poor and humble “little ones” who show by example; and Jesus warns that pity help us if we cause them to stumble (Mk 9:35-48). Do we have family or friends who fit the bill of “little ones”? If so, do we support and encourage them in their mission or do we take a back seat? Despite the competition for wealth and power and the horrors of war in our world today, we know God is about love and care, not competition and violence. God is also about kindness and gener- osity, not cruelty and meanness. As for the leather-back turtle, there will be times when we are afraid or confused by a particular circumstance and our first reac- tion may be to retaliate or retreat to a posi- tion of safety. Like the psalmist, aware of our human fail- ings and understanding the power of our “helper”, the Holy Spirit, (Jn 14:16) when we falter may we ask for God’s forgive- ness. ……... Do we have the courage to swim against the tide and be prophets for God? Bet Green © Redemptorists 2018

OUR LADY OF FATIMA 1st Saturday Devotions

Rosary at Holy Family Church Lennox Head.

Saturday 6th October, at 8.00 am .

Everyone welcome.

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY: This weekend we are celebrating the annual Social Justice Sunday. Many of us in the parish will really notice the relevance of this year’s message from the Bishops of Australia. It’s called “A Place to Call Home – making a home for everyone in our land”. The document begins with the gospel story of the Good Samaritan. It goes on to cover the growing problem of homelessness and insecure housing in Australian society. Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen of Parramatta writes in his forward: “We pray that Australia will hear the challenges that this Statement offers: to confront an economy that has allowed housing to become out of the reach of so many; to reach out, like the Samaritan, to the wounded and helpless; and to call on our governments to make hard decisions that will allow everyone in our communities to find secure accommodation.” Download a copy of the pdf from the parish website and read it as a family. We have a limited number of printed copies for those who do not have access to the internet.

CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 12: Our Year 12 students at Xavier Catholic College graduated on Thursday 27th, with a school Mass and then a Presentation event at the Magis Centre at Xavier. They now begin their final preparations for the H.S.C. and we will accompany them in prayer.

CONGRATULATIONS ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY MEMBERS: Society members work quietly in the spirit of the founder, Frederic Ozanam and under the inspiration of St Vincent de Paul. They care for the less well off in our society at a time when mental illnesses are increasing and addictions are prevalent. Most of us just don’t notice the people in our streets who are suffering in these ways, and in many other ways as well. This week we congratulate the society on the 88th anniversary of its presence in Ballina parish. We should always keep society members in our prayers as they are parishioners at the same time as they are Vincentians

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY 2018

Today is Social Justice Sunday. The Australian Catholic Bishops have published a Social Justice Statement, titled:

A Place to call Home. Making a home for every-one in our land.

Australia’s growing homelessness and housing insecurity, affirms that secure housing is a human right and a public good, and draws inspiration from the life and teaching of Jesus and our Christian tradition Copies of the Social Justice statement, pamphlets and prayer cards are at the back of our churches, or a download of the Statement can be found on the website for the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au and on the parish website: www.sfxballina.org.au

St Vincent de Paul Society. An Invitation to discover more. Our St Vincent de Paul Conference is looking to recruit additional members to join us in this most satisfying work and engage in a grass roots and practical demonstration of faith in action. Jesus gave all Christians the command to “Love one another”; what better way to show both your Christian Love and your Aussie Spirit by offering a helping hand to those who are struggling with day to day social and economic issues in their lives? You don’t need a PhD in Counselling! ALL you need is a compassionate heart and a generous spirit! …Is this you? Speak to Father or to one of our members after Mass for more information. Brochures are available at the back of the church.

WHATSOEVER YOU DO

Refrain Whatsoever you do To the least of my

people That you do unto me.

1. When I was hungry you gave me to eat

When I was thirsty you gave me to drink

Now enter into the home of my Father. /R

2. When I was homeless you opened your door

When I was naked you gave me your coat

Now enter into the home of my Father. /R

3. When I was weary you helped me find rest

When I was anxious you calmed all my fears

Now enter into the home of my Father. /R

4. When in a prison you came to my cell

When on a sick bed you cared for my needs

Now enter into the home of my Father. /R

5. Hurt in a battle you bound up my wounds

Searching for kindness you held out your hands

Now enter into the home of my Father. /R

EMMAUS SONG By Monica Brown Used with permission ONELICENCE #A-621003.

Come journey with us walk with us, listen to our story

Our hopes, our dreams, our struggles, our joys, our story of life

We share with you as we journey, Jesus our God

Refrain May our hearts be warmed

And strengthened by your presence here In your holy word

And bread of life in the love we share May we go forth on our journey with you

Come journey with us, talk with us, tell us of your story

Open our minds to understand, the mystery of Your life with us Your risen life, Jesus our God. /R

Come journey with us, stay with us, make us

one with you In the blessing of bread, the breaking of bread,

may we truly know Your life in us your love for us, Jesus our God. /R
