3 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PASTORAL PONDERINGS This weekend we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. As I reflected upon today’s Gospel account, I asked myself why John was complaining to Jesus: “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us?” Why was he concerned with someone doing a good deed? Was he upset because the person was doing the same kind of ministry that the Lord commissioned “the twelve” to do? Did he see the person as an outsider? Did John feel that he was not worthy to perform works in the Lord’s name? I decided to read a bit about this Scripture passage, and it answered some of my questions. The reading contains pronouncements of Jesus regarding acceptance, hospitality, and scandal. John’s intolerance is directed at one who is not a member of the “chosen twelve”, someone perceived as performing marvels (casting out demons) on their own. The disciples were the ones who had been commissioned to share in the ministry of Jesus. Jesus knew that the man had some degree of faith in Jesus so as to use his name to cast out demons. Jesus communicates that no one who performs a mighty deed in his name cannot at the same time speak ill of him. Jesus does not question the motivation of the man, but authenticates his right to cast out demons. Then Jesus goes on to warn the disciples about scandal, and how detrimental it can be to a person’s life and relationship to God. He uses drastic examples in making his point about the deadly consequences for those who give scandal to the “little ones” (which may refer to children or to the whole community who have faith in Jesus). Those who cause others to sin will be severely punished; Jesus uses the word, Gehenna, to explain the kind of exile they will experience. Gehenna was a valley outside the city of Jerusalem where the early Canaanites offered human sacrifice. The Israelites turned the sacrilegious site into a garbage heap where refuse was burning continuously. It became the symbol of unquenchable punishing fires of the afterlife.

The answers to last week’s quiz are on page 4 of today’s bulletin. This week’s topic is saints. The questions are: 1) Who is the patron saint of the Universal Church? 2) Who is the patron saint of the United States? 3) Who is the patron saint of our diocese? 4) Who are the patron saints of our parish? 5) Who are the patron saints of grandparents? 6) To whom does one pray when losing something? 7) Whom does one invoke while battling cancer? 8) Who is the patron saint of musicians? 9) Who was the first martyr of the Church? 10) Who is the patron saint of the blind? 11) who is the patron saint of artists? 12) Who is the patron saint of children and the poor?

Blessings on your week! Sister Chris Gretka, CSJ

Answers to September 19th Quiz

How did you do with last week’s quiz? Are you feeling smarter than a Catholic fifth grader? Here are last week’s answers:

1) There are 12 apostles. Bartholomew, Andrew (bother of Peter), Simon Peter, Phillip, Thomas, James (son of Zebedee), John (son of Zebedee), James (son of Alphaeus), Jude (also know as Thaddeus), Simon the Zealot, Matthew (the tax collector), Judas Iscariot (who betrayed Jesus and was replace by Matthias).

2) There are 8 beatitudes. One of them is ”Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God.”

3) There are 8 Corporal Works of Mercy. One is: to feed the hungry.

4) (All) Sundays are days of obligation. Since the Ascension of the Lord (a holy day) falls on a Sunday in many dioceses, it is covered by the Sunday obligation. Other holy days of obligation most often occur on weekdays and they are: Mary, of God (January 1), Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15), All Saints (November 1), Immaculate Conception (December 8), and The Nativity of the Lord -Christmas (December 25). If January 1, August 15, or November 1 fall on a Monday or a Saturday, the obligation to attend Mass is re-moved.

5) There are 9 days in a novena. One of the oldest novenas sanctioned by the Church is the Novena to the Holy Spirit (nine days before Pentecost).

6) There are 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment (Counsel), Fortitude (Courage), Knowledge, Piety (Reverence), and Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe in God’s presence).

7) There are 10 commandments. They will be listed in next week’s bulletin.
