Use your vacuum cleaner only as describedin this guide. Use only with Searsrecommended attachments.

Do not leave vacuum cleaner when pluggedin. Unplug from outlet when not in use andbefore performing maintenance.

Turn off all controls before unplugging.

Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.Do not put on chairs, tables, etc. Keep onfloor.

Do not usevacuum cleaner to pick upflammable or combustible liquids (gasoline,cleaning fluid, perfumes, etc.), or use inareas where they may be present. Thefumes from these substances can create afire hazard or explosion.

Do not pick up anything that is burning orsmoking, such as cigarettes_ matches, or hotashes.

Do not use vacuum cleaner without dustbag and!or filters in place.

Always change the dust bag aftervacuuming carpet cleaners or freshener,powders, and fine dust. These productsclog the bag, reduce airflow and can causethe bag to burst. Failure to chage the bagcould cause permanent damage to thevacuum cleaner.

Do not usethe vacuum cleaner to pick upsharp hard objects, small toys, pins, paperclips, etc. They may damage the vacuumcleaner.

Do not operature the vacuum cleanerwithout the exhaust filter or filter door inplace.

The hose contains electrical wires. Do notuse when damaged, cut, or punctured.Replace if cut or worn. Do not pTckupsharp objects.

4. Select a height adjust setting by pressingthe HEIGHT ADJUST pedal on the rear ofthe PowerMate. The height adjust settingshows on the indicator. See SUGGESTEDHEIGHT ADJUST SETTINGS (page 13).

Afleniion: Refer to your carpetmanufacturers cleaning recommendations.Some more deffcate carpets may requirethat they be vacuumed with the PowerMateagitator turned off to prevent carpetdamage.

SUGGESTEDSWEEPING PATTERN

For best cleaning action, the PowerMateshould be pushed straight away from youand pulled straight back. At the end ofeach pull stroke, the direction of thePowerMate should be changed to point intothe next section to be cleaned. This patternshould be continued across the carpet orfloor with slow, gliding motions.

NOTE: Fast,random strokesdo not providecompletecleaning.

SUGGESTED HEIGHT ADJUST SETTINGS

For best deep down cleaning, use the XLOheight adjust setting. However, you mayneed to raise the height to make some jobseasier, such as scatter rugs and some deeppile carpets, and to prevent the vacuumcleaner from shutting off.

PERFORMANCE FEATURES i,_ WARNING

Always turn off and unplug the vacuumcleaner before cleaning the agitator areaas agitator may suddenly restart. Failureto do so can result in personal injury.

BELTRESET

The PowerMate has built-in protectionagainst motor and belt damage should theagitator jam. If the agitator slows down orstops, the BELT RESETshuts off thePowerMate and the red belt reset light willturn on. The canister motor will continue toruff,

To correct problem: Turn off and unplugvacuum cleaner, remove obstruction, thenpress BELT RESET button.

If the problem persists_ have the vacuumcleaner serviced by a Sears or otherqualified service agent.

THERMAL PROTECTOR

Thisvacuum cleaner has a thermal

protector which automatically trips toprotect the vacuum cleaner fromoverheating, if a clog prevents the normalflow of air to the motor, the thermalprotector turns the motor offautomatically. This allows the motor tocool in order to prevent possible damageto the vacuum cleaner.

To correct problem: Turn off and unplugvacuum cleaner to allow the vacuumcleaner to cool and the thermal protectorto reset. Check for and remove clogs, ifnecessary. See REMOVING CLOGS (page20). Also check and replace any cloggedfilters. Wait approximately thirty (30)minutes and plug the vacuum cleaner inand turn back on to check if the thermalprotector has reset.

CHECK BAG INDICATOR

When the vacuum cleaner is running withnormal airflow, the CHECK BAG light isoff. The light comes on whenever thedust bag is full, airflow becomes blocked,or if there is a clog. tf that occurs, firstcheck thedisposable dust CHECKBAGbag. Then check Indicator,the motor safetyfilter and otherpossible cloglocations shown inREMOVINGCLOGS (page 20).

To correct problem: See the TROUBLE-SHOOTING table (page 29-30).

NOTE: The CHECK BAG indicator light maycome on when using certain attachments,due to reduced airflow through attachment.The CHECK BAG indicator light may notturn on when the vacuum cleaner is used inlow suction power level due to reduced airpower.

The wand has a "U" shaped storage hookthat slides into the "U" shaped slot on thecanister.

The storage hook allows the wands andPowerMate to be stored with the canister toconserve storage space. The canister mustbe stored on end for this feature to be used.

To attach thePowerMate, ffmust be in theflat position. Usethe handlerelease pedal toplace it in thisposition.

The wand willslip out of theslot as it is liftedup for use andwill slide into theslot as it islowered for

storage.

- Check PowerMate for any dirt or debrisin the belt path area or in the agitatorarea. Carefully remove any string ordebris located on the agitator or endcaps. See TO CLEAN AGITATOR (page25).

If the vacuum cleaner still has poorsuction, do the following:

1. Connect the hose to the canister andturn vacuum cleaner on. Check the endof the hose for suction. If there is goodsuction on the hose handle, there is noclog in the hose. tf the suction is bad,remove any dirt or debris in the hoseand handle.

2, Connect hose handle to wand. Checkthe end of the wand for suction. Ifthere is good suction at the end of thewand, there is no clog in the wand. Ifthe suction is bad_ remove any dirt ordebris in the wand.

3. Check PowerMate swivel. Remove anydirt or debris.

1. Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner. DONOT drip water on vacuum cleaner.

2. To clean exterior_ or to reduce staticelectricity and dust build-up, wipe outersurface of vacuum cleaner and attach-ments. Use a clean, soft cloth that hasbeen dipped in a solution of mild liquiddetergent and water, then wrung dry. Wipedry after cleaning.

CAUTION

Do not use attachments if they are wet.Attachments used in dirty areas, such asunder a refrigerator, should not be usedon other surfaces until they are washed.They could leave marks.

For best cleaning results, the dust bag should be changed often. The CHECK BAG indicatorlight will come on when the dust bag needs to be changed or the airflow is blocked.

2. Remove hose from canister. (SeeASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION5_ page 8).

3. Pull hood release out and up.

4. Lift canister hood.

5. Pull dust bag outof the red bagmount and disposeof dust bag.

NOTE: Check themotor safety filterand replace, ifnecessary. (SeeMOTOR SAFETYFILTER CHANGING,page 22).

NOTE: The red bag mount will flip forwardafter removing dust bag. This will preventthe hood from closing until a new dust bagis installed.

REPLACING DUST BAG

Note: DO NOT bend or crease themiddle of the cardboard when installingthe dust bag into the bag mount slots.

1. Verify that vacuum cleaner isunplugged.

2. Rotate red bagmount clown and "\_install dust bag intoslots per illustration, _._pushing down untilthe cardboard tablocks into positionand the holes align.

3. Tuck the dust bag securely into the bagcavity so that none of the dust bag is ableto be pinched by the hood,

4. Close and latch canister hood.

5. Insert hose into canister until it snaps inplace. (See ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS,page 8).

CAUTION

NEVER EMPTY OUT AND REUSEA DUSTi BAG. Very fine materials, such as carpetfreshener, face powder, fine dust, plaster,soot, new carpet lint, etc. can clog theidust bag and cause it to burst before it isfull and may cause damage to vacuumcleaner motor. Change dust bag moreoften when vacuuming these materials.

I MOTOR SAFETYFILTERCHANGING IThe motor safety filter must be replaced when dirty. It should be replaced regularlydepending on use conditions. The motor safety filter CANNOT be washed as it will lose itsdust trapping ability.

DIRT SENSOR

Although the dirt sensor feature in yourKenmore PowerMate ® is designed foryears of trouble free use, the passage ofdirt through the air passage system cancoat the lenses causing the green light tocome on and stay on - never switching tored. When this happens the lenses mustbe cleaned.

_CAUTIONNever use water or any cleaning solutionwhen cleaning the lenses. The residue ofthe water or cleaners will accelerate therecaatlng of the lenses and make cleaningnecessary sooner.

2. Conecte la manguera al tuba telescoplco.Cheque el final del tuba telescopico parala succion. Si hay buena succton al final,significa que no hay obstruccion en eltuba tetescopico. Si la succton es mala,remover cualquier suciedad u objeto enel tuba telescopico.

3. Revisar el conducto de succion delPower Mate. Remover cualquiersuciedad u objeto.
