Welcome to Cornerstone

Dear Friends, I’m so excited that another year of AWANA is about to begin! Every year, we see God at work in such amazing ways in the lives of our children through this ministry. As I think back to the incredible way God used AWANA in the lives of my own daughters, I’m so grateful that we can offer it for your children here at Cornerstone. Thank you for helping your children memorize their verses, bringing them faithfully to club every week, and making this investment in the development of their spiritual lives. Like me, I believe one day you’ll look back at the time your children spent in AWANA and praise God for the difference it has made in their lives. Have a great year! Pastor Bill

Dear Parents, Welcome and thank you for giving us the opportunity to share Jesus in AWANA Club with your child! I am so excited to have you and your family become a part of this ministry that helps make Spiritual Champions! We are here to serve you this year and hope that you will call on us if you need us. Cornerstone AWANA Club gives your child the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with God and grow in His Word. It also provides the opportunity to develop a friendship with other children. Your personal involvement will be an encouragement for your child to pass their handbook sections and activities each week. We want you to take the time to read this handbook because it will provide you with information about our AWANA ministry. We consider this a serious responsibility that we do not take lightly. May you and your child have a fantastic year in AWANA! Pam Thornton, Awana Commander [email protected] • 843.617.0560

Have you heard about AWANA? Each school year Cornerstone offers this incredible ministry program for your child’s spiritual growth. Awana is an acronym for Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed, based on 2 Timothy 2:15. Understanding the acronym helps, but what is AWANA? 1. A Time to Play Awana incorporates intentional, engaging activities for kids. Sometimes these are highly organized competitions and events, while at other times it’s more relaxed fun. For children, play is work—it’s how they learn, grow, interact, create, discover, and so much more. 2. A Place to Belong Kids need physically, emotionally, and spiritually safe environments, especially in the context of a Christ-centered family of faith. Matching vests and t-shirts may help kids feel included, but shared experiences, stories, and memories are way more important for relational bonding. 3. A Space to Grow Awana is purposefully designed to move kids (and leaders) forward from salvation toward spiritual maturity in Christ. It presents the Bible from cover-to-cover, introduces a doctrinal foundation, highlights individuals in Scripture who walked with God, emphasizes the importance of the church and disciple making, and equips participants in spiritual practices like Scripture memory and serving so they will know, love, and serve Jesus Christ for life. 4. A Mission to Serve Jesus’ Great Commission in Matt. 28:18-20 is central to what the ministry of Awana is all about—making disciples who make disciples! Children who experience the worldwide mission of God’s good news in action as part of a thriving ministry will be ready to carry this baton to the ends of the earth. 5. A Journey to Remember There are people all over the world who credit their walk with Christ today to the faith foundation that was laid as a child in Awana. Sure, they reflect back on it as a club – for better or worse – but that pales in comparison to their lifetime of vibrant discipleship. You never know how God will use the kids Awana ministry reaches. Regardless of what their future holds, they will definitely remember more than a kid’s club—they’ll look back on the beginning of a faith journey that pointed them directly to Jesus forever. -Pastor Jason Associate Pastor of Children’s Ministry

What is AWANA?

Young people hold a special place in Jesus’ heart. He created them. He sacrificed His life for their sins. He longs for them to know, love, and serve Him. He desires to spend eternity with them. His kingdom belongs to such as these. That’s why kids matter so deeply to AWANA. As a worldwide ministry, AWANA believes that Jesus is the answer to every child’s needs, particularly for salvation. The AWANA ministry and materials have been carefully crafted to help churches clearly and consistently communicate the good news of Christ and His plan for their lives, as expressed in His Word, each week of the AWANA year, and to build a biblical foundation that helps them follow Christ through adulthood. The goal of AWANA is to reach ALL children with the gospel of Christ and to train them to serve Him. Cornerstone Baptist Church began AWANA in 2003. Each Sunday night during the school year, clubbers enjoy exciting AWANA games, hear challenging Bible messages, and memorize the Word of God. We want to help your child become a spiritual champion! The word AWANA stands for “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed” and comes from 2 Timothy 2:15…”Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.” Our weekly club night is divided into 5 Segments:

1. Opening Ceremony (pledges, announcements, & prayer) 2. Game Time (playing games) 3. Small Group Time (prayer, scripture memory, discipleship) 4. Large Group Time (music & teaching time) 5. Closing Ceremony (Awards)

Clubbers sign in with their secretary at 3:45 PM. Opening Ceremony begins promptly at 3:55 PM with all leaders and clubbers assembled around the game square (except for Puggles & Cubbies—they stay in their preschool area the entire night). After prayer, each club is dismissed to their activities for the night.

The AWANA leaders’ goal is to help your child grow spiritually. Club directors or leaders will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to acquaint you with the AWANA ministry of Cornerstone Baptist Church, and how it can benefit not only your child, but also your entire family!

A Very Important Reminder: ALL clubbers MUST check in at the security kiosk & with their secretary upon arriving to club, or they will not be counted present for club. Thank you for helping us by checking your child in each night.

Leader Expectations

We have some requirements that our leaders must meet, however, we also have some expectations we encourage them to consider. The following may give you some insight into the type of leadership we strive for here at Cornerstone AWANA Club:

• A leader must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. • A leader must have a desire and passion to work with children. • A leader must complete our children’s volunteer process, which

includes a background check, child protection policy training, security training, club training and an interview with our Children’s Pastor.

• A leader must agree with the AWANA doctrinal statement. • A leader must be a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. • We expect our leaders to be at club on time each night. • We expect leaders to surrender their Sunday afternoons to the

Lord while working in AWANA and stay committed all year! • We expect our leaders to be examples by wearing clean, neat

uniforms and check-in and get their security nametag each week. • We expect our leaders to follow the rules. • We expect our leaders to display a proper attitude before the

clubbers, other leaders, and parents. • We expect our leaders to pray for our club on a regular basis. • All club directors are expected to have their materials prepared

before each club night begins, including any copies needed for that night.

• All secretaries are expected to have their club records up to date and materials ready before each club night.

• All leaders are expected to lead the children on their assigned color line during game time, opening ceremony, and dismissal.

• All leaders are expected to attend meetings and training opportunities offered during the club year.

Parent Expectations • ALWAYS encourage your child. Children have much more fun when

Mom & Dad show interest in their accomplishments.

• Help your child to attend AWANA every week and to arrive on time consistently. This builds friendships, achievement, and self-discipline.

• During the week, help your child prepare for the sections required for the week. This will ensure that they complete their handbook and receive their special rewards.

• Please do the “Parent At Home Sections” at home with your child!

• Attend all major events. Parents are always welcome and are encouraged to attend special events as a way of showing your support and approval for your child’s accomplishments.

• Please review the discipline guidelines in this handbook with your child. AWANA has very few rules of behavior, but in order to insure that all clubbers have the opportunity to learn as well as have some fun, some rules of behavior will be enforced.

• All clubbers must be checked in by a parent or guardian and escorted to their appropriate area in club each club night.

• Parents must have their child’s security nametag number to pick them up.

• Please plan to pick up clubbers promptly after club in their designated pick up area. Clubbers will not be permitted to leave the building without an adult to pick them up.

• Please DO NOT park on the driveway in front of the church! Park in a parking space. We want to keep a safe environment for our little ones.

• If your child needs to be excused from Game Time, please send a note letting their leader or directors know, otherwise, they will be expected to participate with other clubbers in all activities.

• Yearly club fee with registration per child.

• We will have contests to raise money for our Awana Missionary.

Club Rules • Respect God • Respect Your Leaders • Respect Other Clubbers • Listen for the 5-count. When a leader starts counting to five, clubbers are to

stop what they are doing and listen for instructions. • Study at home. Be prepared to say the weekly verse(s) when you come to

club. • There is NO playing during Small Group. After saying your verse(s) for the

night, sit quietly, and study for next week’s verses. • Verses are said during Small Group or Fast Track unless approved by the

Commander. • You are allowed only two helps while saying a section. You must say the

entire sections at one time. Your leader will assist you if you are having problems with completing a section.

• All sections must be said or completed in the order of the entrance booklets and handbooks unless stated differently.

• During Game Time, you are to give full attention to the Game Directors as well as your leaders. Listen to the instructions so you will know how to play the games. Cheer for your team, but always show good sportsmanship toward the other teams and your own team clubbers.

• All clubbers are expected to participate during game time unless there is a physical limitation.

• You are expected to participate in the flag ceremony, stand at attention, reciting the American & AWANA pledges. During prayer, you are expected to show respect by bowing your head and closing your eyes.

• Running through the church is NOT allowed at any time, except as part of the supervised activities of Game Time.

• You must get permission from your leader to go to the restroom or to use the phone (for emergency purposes only). No child will go to the restroom unescorted!

• Because of Game Time, we suggest clubbers wear proper running shoes. We prefer tennis shoes. No Heely’s are allowed! No short shorts are allowed. The clubber’s middle finger should touch the bottom of their shorts when they are standing up straight.

• Vulgar language and/or offensive clothing are NOT allowed. • If you do not complete a section after 3 consecutive weeks, we will help you

get back on track by working with you during your Game Time and Fast Track.

• If clubber misbehaving continues to occur, you may be sent home (see 3-count under the Discipline section of this handbook).

• Club sign in starts at 3:45 PM. Club starts promptly at 3:55PM and pick up time is 5:30 PM.

• Uniforms must always be worn under any Theme Night Costumes! • You are expected to learn the Gospel Wheel verses, your club song and

pledges to the American and Awana Flag

Discipline

In the event that discipline is required, we have two procedures that will be used by all clubs: The 5-count and the 3-count. The 5-count is for all clubbers, while the 3-count is for individual clubbers.

5-count: When a leader needs the clubbers to be still and quiet, he/she will count from 1 to 5. All other leaders are to join in the count. All clubbers need to stop talking immediately and be still. Clubbers who are not quiet by the count of 5 run the risk of losing AWANA Bucks...Yikes! Listen carefully!!!

3-count: If a child is disrespectful or is disruptive to the club, the following procedures will occur:

A “1” count will be given for the first offense. A “2” count will be given for the second offense, and the child will be counseled by their Director or Leader outside of the club room with another leader as a witness and then return to club.

A “3” count is given and the child is taken by the Director to the Commander. The Commander will decide if the parents are to be called. If disruptive behavior continues, the Commander and parents will need to discuss when the child can return to club.

It is our prayer that no situation will have to be restored in this manner, but in fairness to the clubbers and leaders, the above will be enforced as necessary. Thank you for your help.

Membership & Cost

Your child will bring home an entrance booklet, which is the first step to his/her AWANA achievements (except for Puggles). We hope you will help him/her complete this booklet. We will be doing this booklet together as a group. Upon completion of the entrance booklet, your child will be eligible to receive his/her handbook and uniform if they do not already have them. We love visitors! They are welcome to our club, but on the 3rd visit to our club we expect them to become a club member!

There is one fee for everything your child will need for the entire club year. (See Awana Brochure). Uniforms and books cannot be given out or ordered unless payment is made ahead of time. Please do not allow cost to keep your child from being in AWANA. We will work out a payment plan for you if necessary. Please speak with our Club Commander about this.

Uniforms

Clubbers AND Leaders are expected to wear their AWANA uniform to each club meeting. A properly worn uniform helps AWANA clubbers and leaders earn respect and credibility.

Uniform standards are as follows: • Cubbies & Sparks vests must be clean and buttoned. • Puggles and T&T shirts must be clean and do NOT have to be tucked in. • All awards should be put on the uniform as they are earned and put in

the proper place. Please check for placement in the back of you child’s handbook.

• Uniforms are to be worn under any theme night costume. • If your child does not wear their uniform to club, we will keep their

uniform awards until they have their uniform on.

Puggles Handbook Progression

Puggles (older 2’s and younger 3 year olds) do not have a handbook. Puggles teaches toddlers simple lessons through teaching cards, activities, music, and more. They will be taught one lesson a week built around 4 concepts: God made everything; God saw it was good; God is love, and Give Thanks. Take home cards help parents reinforce lesson concepts throughout the week. They also encourage the whole family to learn about God together. There are no awards to put on their t-shirt.

Cubbies Handbook Progression

Cubbies (3 to 4 year olds) have two handbooks (Appleseed & Honeycomb). Your child will work in one handbook each year. The handbook is divided into weekly “Bear Hugs” that teach basic truths about God. They learn the verse at home with you and then repeat it to their leader at club.

Cubbies (preschoolers) will progress through their books together. The sections will be completed in order except for some sections for special times of the year. Each lesson contains required memory work and activities that should be done at home as well as an optional extra credit activity. There are additional materials available for purchase for those children who need an extra challenge. Since the progression through the main book will take the entire club year, the extra credit materials should be completed concurrently. If your child misses a week of club, be sure to check with your director to catch up for the next week. DO NOT work ahead in the handbook. We work together each week. Please do not go ahead of our progression.

Sparks Handbook Progression

Before working in a handbook, all Sparks will complete the entrance booklet —Flight 3:16– together. This centers on the gospel message of John 3:16. There are 3 handbooks—one for each year in Sparks Club. HangGlider (5K,) WingRunner (1st Grade), and SkyStormer (2nd Grade) will take Sparkies on a sequential journey through Scripture—Genesis through Revelation—with regular layovers to meet important Bible characters along the way. Each book includes verse memory sections, Bible biographies, and activities. The handbooks are enhanced with an audio handbook CD. The CD includes dramatic readings of the Bible biographies and a helpful timeline. All Sparks will begin in the handbook of their grade. Sparks who register later than the beginning of the year will begin wherever their grade is in their handbook. A schedule of verses will be given out to let you know what your child needs to know each week. Parents do not have to remove the clubber’s previous rank emblem on the uniforms before applying the new one. Sparkies also receive pilot wings to display their achievement jewels. Please help your child at home with their handbooks and do all of the “At Home” sections prior to club.

T&T Handbook Progression

T&T 3rd & 4th Graders All 3rd & 4th graders will begin in the Start Zone Entrance Booklet each club year. There are two handbooks for Ultimate Adventure. Mission: Grace in Action & Mission: Evidence of Grace. All 3rd and 4th grade clubbers will work in the same handbook together. Clubbers will progress in their handbooks according to the handbook schedule given with their handbooks. We suggest you help your child complete the “At Home” sections prior to club and review the verses each week to help your child stay on track. Each segment contains optional extra credit work. After completing a segment they will receive an emblem as an award to put into their uniform T&T 5th Graders All 5th graders will begin in the Start Zone Entrance Booklet each club year. All 5th graders will be working together in the same book each year. A patch will be awarded each time they complete 4 consecutive segments. It is suggested that you help your child complete the “At Home” segments and do the segments on the schedule each week in order to stay on track. Each segment contains optional extra credit work, which may be done along with the segment, or at the completion of the handbook.

Rules for Sparks and T&T Handbooks

• Clubbers may be given 2 helps per section. “Help” is whatever aid the leader chooses to assist a clubber in the completion of a section. One help would equal no more than three words or any other hint.

• Clubbers must recite both reference and verse. It is suggested clubbers follow their clubs handbook schedule to be able to finish their handbook by the end of the year.

• Sparks and T&T will follow the “together we move” method. Each handbook has a printed schedule of the sections that are due each week.

• Please note the “AT HOME” sections on each handbook schedule. Parents…please make sure these are done prior to club. Bible reading sections should be done at home. Each Bible reading section has two or three parts to be completed on different days. The goal is to help clubbers develop a daily quiet time. Answers to Bible reading questions must be correct. If an answer is wrong, the leader may assist the clubber in finding the correct answer. If the right answers are given, the section will be passed. If wrong answers still appear after handbook time is over, the clubber must work on the Bible reading at home with their parent and try to pass the section next week at club.

• Club attendance is a requirement for completing a handbook. One unexcused absence per quarter (8 weeks) is allowed. Sickness is always an excused absence.

• Sunday School/Church Attendance is another requirement. Only 2 unexcused absences are allowed per semester (16 weeks). A clubber receives 2 awards for their books or vest.

• If you do not bring your handbook to club, sections will not be checked off by your leader. You will have to wait until the next club to receive credit. You may borrow a book and study during handbook time.

Please remember your handbook every week!!!

Verse Schedules We are doing “Together We Move” in our club. Our clubbers are all doing the same verse each week according to the verse schedules that will be given to your child. Parents, please follow the verse schedule, so that you and your child will know what verse to know each week. These schedules will also be on our church website at www.exit137.org in case your child loses their schedule.

AWANA Special Events

CBC Bible Quiz Bible Quiz is a competitive event which tests clubbers’ knowledge of the handbook material and provides individual recognition and awards. The competition motivates young people to increase their Bible knowledge. This is for T&T clubbers only.

CBC Grand Prix AWANA Grand Prix is a car-racing event popular among AWANA clubs nationwide. Weeks before the race, clubbers purchase small, pine blocks of wood or car models and plastic wheels from which they construct their cars, usually with the help of a parent or leader. During the Grand Prix, clubbers compete within two categories: speed and design. Cubbies, Sparks, T&T and Open Division (any Adult) can participate.

Mission Offering Patch Shouldn’t kids everywhere hear the gospel? We have adopted Cuba. Your help is their lifeline. Half of the offering goes to Cuba and half to our Awana Missionaries, Bill and Dee Fugel. When your child pays $5.00 at registration or at club he/she will receive a patch for their uniform. Please Note Special Event Change: All of our Special Events will be held at Cornerstone and the teams for Bible Quiz will comprise of the clubbers from Cornerstone Awana Club. Please encourage your children to participate this year. Watch for the newsletters and fliers promoting the events this year!

Children with Special Needs

Please let our Commanders or Director know if your child has any: • Medical Conditions • Food restrictions (allergies). • Physical limitations that limit Game Time participation. • Learning problems that could prevent or slow the pace of scripture

memory. • Hearing or speech problems. • Difficult family situation that might be influencing your child's

personality or behavior. We want to do all that we can to help your child learn about God & His Word!

Bring-A-Friend Options

• The intent of the Bring-A-Friend sections in the handbook is to give

friends the opportunity to hear the gospel at club. We realize that it is sometimes difficult to bring a friend. If your child has tried to bring a visitor without success, we have provided alternative activities to help them accomplish their handbook sections. The following suggestions will be accepted:

• Invite 5 friends—ask them to sign a piece of paper saying they have been asked and give it to your leader.

• Do an outreach project such as going to a nursing home, working at a shelter or soup kitchen, or sending a card to a shut-in

• Wear your AWANA uniform to school. Bring a note from your teacher verifying you did so.

Parents must sign in their child’s handbook that their child could not bring a friend and state which option they did to complete the section in their handbook.

Club Songs

AWANA Theme Song Firmly AWANA stands, led by the Lord’s commands; Approved workmen are not ashamed, Boys and girls for His service claimed! Hail! AWANA! On the march for youth; Hail! AWANA! Holding forth the truth; Building lives on the Word of God, AWANA stands! Our Savior following with steps unfaltering, and love unfaltering, His praise we sing, His banner over us, in service glorious, we’ll fight victorious for Christ our King!

Puggles Theme Song I like to be where the love of God is taught to me Puggles! Puggles! (Kids Shout) I want to be a part of God’s big family Puggles! Puggles! (Kids Shout) I want to be where I can see God’s goodness flow down over me A place where I belong (repeat)

Cubbies Theme Song We are AWANA Cubbies, we’re happy all day long. We know that Jesus loves us! That’s why we sing this song. We hop because we’re happy And we jump and shout for joy. For Jesus is a friend to us. He loves each girl and boy.

Sparks Theme Song We are “Sparks” for Jesus; “Sparks” to light the world, We will shine for Jesus, as we tell each boy and girl! We will hide God’s Word in our hearts; We will serve Him right from the start; From His love we never can part For we are “Sparks!” “Sparks!” “Sparks!” “Sparks!” “Sparks” to light the world.

T&T Theme Song I am off on the Ultimate Adventure! Trusting Jesus all along the way. To the truth of God’s Word I will surrender, No matter where I am from day to day.

Chorus: In the sky, under sea, in the wild, Christ with me. Here at home, around the world, His love is clear to see. Won’t you come along with me On the Ultimate Adventure!

I will train for the mission He has for me. I will trust in Him to give the victory. As I read His Word and pray, He gives direction, As I follow Him each day and every day.

Pledges American Flag Pledge: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. AWANA Flag Pledge: I pledge allegiance to the AWANA flag, which stands for the AWANA Clubs, whose goal is to reach boys and girls with the gospel of Christ, and train them to serve Him.

Visitors

We LOVE for clubbers to invite visitors to our Awana club; in fact, we STRONGLY encourage them to invite their friends, family, and neighbors! After all, we are about leading kids to Christ! We have a general rule for visitors. Visitors are allowed to visit 3 times before they must join. On the 1st visit, if the visitor is in a different grade from the clubber who invited them, they may go with the clubber who brought them. If the same child visits thereafter, they must attend the club/grade they are currently in (Exceptions, for example, if the visitor is a three year old, they cannot go with the older grades). If there are any questions, please see the Commander.
