December Dear Citizens, Dec. 2 is an important deadline for high school students who want to win a college scholarship. That is the day applications are due for the Youth in Government program. Students who attend at least six classes and complete other activities are eligible to apply for a scholarship. Classes are Jan. 13 - April 6 and students will learn about the importance of city government and community involvement. More details are in this newsletter. I am also happy to announce that on Saturday, Dec. 14, the City of Euless is ringing the bell in the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. As part of the Bell Ringing Day, I will have a team at Kroger in Euless to do our part and ring the bell. A successful Red Kettle season greatly increases the Salvation Army’s ability to meet the crisis needs of food, clothing and shelter in our community throughout the year. Proceeds benefit children, families and individuals who are in need. Heritage Park ChristmasSaturday, December 14, 1 - 5 p.m.Heritage Park, 201 Cullum Drive

Celebrate an old-fashioned Christmas at historic Heritage Park. Visit the Himes Log House, McCormick Barn, Fuller House and the Euless Heritage Museum and learn about Euless history. You can listen to local choirs sing your Christmas favorites, visit our petting zoo and let little ones ride a pony. Kids can visit the Blacksmith and Santa Claus. There will be kettle corn for sale along with free refreshments for everyone. Holiday cheer and Euless history wrapped up in one great afternoon.

It’s Time to Register for Youth in Government

The HEB 2020 Youth in Government class begins in January. The cities of Hurst, Euless, Bedford and the HEB Chamber of Commerce are partnering to provide local high school students with the opportunity to learn about city government and community involvement. As always, participants have the chance to win a college scholarship!

Applicants must live in Hurst, Euless or Bedford and be a junior or senior in high school by Jan. 1, 2020. Most meetings take place on Monday evenings from January through April. For details and to apply online, visit www.HEB.org and search Youth in Government. Applications are due Dec. 16.

Volunteer of the Year Nominations are Due Soon

Do you know a volunteer, youth or adult, or business that goes “above and beyond” to make our community FabEuless? We are looking for nominations for Volunteer of the Year. Let’s celebrate the dedication and service of these exceptional people.

Animal Shelter Fosters Needed for the Holidays

The Euless Animal Shelter needs your support to help keep dogs and cats out of the shelter and in foster homes. Animal rescues are much happier in a home environment. Would you like to help by fostering a dog or cat? We have experienced volunteers who can provide training and resources to answer your questions.

Holiday ClosuresCity Facilities will be closed December 24 - 25 and January 1. Texas Star will be open January 1. On Tuesday, December 24, trash and recycling collection will follow the regular schedule.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day occur on a Wednesday, so the weekly schedule for trash and recy-cling collection will shift by one day. For example, Thursday service will shift to Friday, Friday service will shift to Saturday. Please contact Republic Waste Services at 817-332-7301 with questions about trash, or Community Waste Disposal at 972-392-9300 with questions about recycling.
