With Power and Precision, Yankees Take Another From the Cubs

By BILLY WITZMAY 6, 2017

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs pounded baseballs over the wall and had the best starting rotation in baseball last season. But what they did better than any other team was play defense — and they did it by a historic margin.

With their effective use of shifts and Gold Glove Award winners at first base in Anthony Rizzo and right field in Jason Heyward, a worthy Gold Glove candidate in shortstop Addison Russell and the defensive dynamo Javier Baez at second base, the Cubs converted batted balls into outs better than any team had in 34 years, according to Baseball Prospectus.

The Yankees had the solution in their 11-6 victory over the Cubs on Saturday night. They simply hit the ball where the Cubs could not reach it — spraying one after another down the foul lines during a five-run first inning and a couple of others over the ivy-covered walls of Wrigley Field for good measure.

It made for a comfortable night for the rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery, who allowed just three hits and two earned runs in six and two-thirds innings as the Yankees won their fourth in a row and remained atop the American League East.

Starlin Castro, a former Cub, continued to make his return to Wrigley a memorable one. He hit one of the balls that ended up where no Cub could catch it, into the left-field bleachers for a two-run homer, and he has five hits in the series.

Cubs fans, as is their tradition for home runs by the visiting team, tossed the ball back onto the field. Aaron Hicks received a similar treatment after his three-run homer in the eighth.

“I give him a lot of credit because he wasn’t happy during spring training,” Girardi said, referring to his decision to award the right field spot to Aaron Judge.

Hicks, a former first-round draft pick, did not argue with Girardi’s assessment that he has matured. “I have more of a plan, an idea of what I want to do in every at-bat, and it’s been working out so far,” Hicks said.

As Hicks reached first base after his home run, he pointed to C. C. Sabathia in the dugout. Before Hicks had come to the plate, Sabathia had suggested that Hicks — who at the time had five home runs to his name this season — had not hit one in a while. Hicks had shrugged the idea off.

“Then I ended up hitting it, and I got excited,” he said.

But the Yankees built their lead not with power but with placement.

Brett Gardner, who won the series opener on Friday with a two-out, two-strike, three-run homer in the ninth inning, ripped the third pitch he saw in the first inning between Rizzo and the first-base line for a double.

“Rizzo covers a lot of ground, not just front and back but side to side,” Gardner said. “When he dove for it, I wasn’t sure. If he gets that, who knows how that changes the inning?”

Hicks then beat out a bunt, which he had laid down to move the runner up, and Gardner raced home when pitcher Brett Anderson threw the ball past Rizzo. Castro drove in Hicks by slicing the first pitch of his at-bat just inside the right-field line. After Judge struck out, Gary Sanchez lashed a single a few feet inside the left-field line past a lunging Kris Bryant, scoring Castro.

Didi Gregorius followed by dropping a soft liner into shallow left field. Chase Headley drove home Sanchez and Gregorius when his liner landed down the right-field line for a double.

Anderson then left with what the Cubs announced was a low back injury. He had recorded one out.

Although the Yankees jumped to an 8-0 lead, and restored the margin to 11-3 after Hicks hit his home run in the eighth, the Cubs made the Yankees sweat a little when they pushed across three runs in the eighth before Adam Warren replaced Tommy Layne and escaped further damage by striking out Ben Zobrist with runners at second and third.

The Cubs, already thin on pitching, waved the white flag in the ninth — they sent catcher Miguel Montero to the mound. After walking Sanchez, he got Gregorius to ground into a forceout, retired Headley on a liner and, after a walk by Chris Carter, got Rob Refsnyder to fly out to center.

As Cubs center fielder Albert Almora Jr. camped under the ball, the crowd rose to its feet and gave Montero a standing ovation. He responded by tipping his cap as he jogged back to the dugout, having performed a feat the Cubs’ starter could not: getting three outs.

The Yankees could have Jacoby Ellsbury back in center field and Matt Holliday at first base on Sunday night. Ellsbury has not played since he injured his elbow crashing into the Yankee Stadium wall on Monday. Holliday, the designated hitter, has not played in the field this season. … Aaron Judge, who was moved into the cleanup spot for the first time this season, was hitless in five at-bats on Saturday night.

Brian Cashman deserves credit for under-the-radar deals that are working, not just restocking farm system

MIKE MAZZEO

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Updated: Sunday, May 7, 2017, 3:06 AM

CHICAGO — John Ryan Murphy. Adam Warren. Shane Greene.

That’s who Brian Cashman traded — in order — for Aaron Hicks, Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius.

And it was that trio that combined to go 9-for-13 with two homers and six RBI in the Yankees’ 11-6 victory over the Cubs on Saturday night at Wrigley Field.

Aaron Judge’s seven-game hitting streak may have come to an end in his first game in the cleanup spot, but it didn’t matter.

“Awesome,” Castro responded when asked about taking at least two of three from the defending World Series champions after hitting a two-run homer against his former team in the fourth inning. “I think it’s good to come in here and compete against these guys. It tells us how good we can be and how good we are.”

Hicks, Castro and Gregorius all went through their share of struggles in pinstripes at various points, but all three appear to be on the rise in 2017. Hicks (.355, six homers, 15 RBI in 62 at-bats) has figured out how to thrive in a part-time role, Castro (.381, six homers, 19 RBI, 43 hits) is playing like an All-Star again and Gregorius (.344, 11 hits in 32 at-bats) has picked up right where he left off last season after opening this season on the disabled list due to a strained right shoulder.

Cashman has gotten credit for building a strong farm system, but he deserves some plaudits for these under-the-radar deals as well. Joe Girardi is certainly pleased with how all three players are performing.

“I think Starlin is having a blast playing here,” Girardi said. “I’m not saying he didn’t have fun playing in Chicago, but I think he’s fit in great. He’s happy, he’s comfortable and he’s played really, really well.”

The Yankees have a chance to sweep the Cubs on Sunday night in front of a national TV audience.

“Hicksie deserves a lot of credit because he wasn’t happy when we left spring training (and he lost the starting job to Aaron Judge),” Girardi said, citing Hicks’ maturation as a player and ability to figure out a plan when he does play. “But he’s getting plenty of at-bats, and it’s another huge night for him.”

“And Didi’s been great,” Girardi added. “As guys come in they’re doing a really good job, and we’ve talked about how we don’t ever really know where the offense is going to come, but you feel like it’s going to come. Because it’s been so spread out and everyone has contributed.”

Murphy is currently playing for the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate while Greene has become a quality reliever with the Tigers following two terrible seasons as a starter.

Warren, of course, has rediscovered himself in New York after struggling in Chicago. And it was only fitting that he recorded the final four outs on Saturday night while lowering his ERA to 0.57.

After the game, the Yankees munched on meatballs covered in tomato sauce in the clubhouse while watching highlights of their latest “W” on ESPN’s SportsCenter. They’ll have a chance to sweep the Cubs on Sunday night in front of a national TV audience. And somewhere, their GM was probably feeling at least some satisfaction.

If only for a moment, anyway.

Yankees offense jumps all over Cubs pitching early en route to 11-6 win

BY MIKE MAZZEO

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Saturday, May 6, 2017, 10:47 PM

Starlin Castro cranked a two-run shot into the Wrigley Field bleachers on Saturday night and appeared to enjoy his trot around the bases a little more than usual.

There's nothing quite like homering against your former team.

Castro, who is red-hot at the plate, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and the Yankees made it a little easier on themselves against the defending World Series champions on this night. No need for any ninth-inning dramatics from Brett Gardner this time around.

The Bombers batted around and scored five runs in the first inning against the Cubs as they moved 10 games over .500 for the first time in 2017. Castro is hitting .381 with 15 multi-hit games.

Aaron Hicks had a career-high tying four hits -- including a three-run homer (his sixth of the season) -- Gary Sanchez contributed two hits and two runs in his second game since returning from injury and rookie Jordan Montgomery provided 6.2 innings of three-run (two earned) ball.

Aaron Judge (0-for-5) hit cleanup for the first time in his career.

Gary Sanchez showed off his quickness behind the plate and his rocket throwing arm, spinning and firing to Chris Carter to throw out Ben Zobrist on a swinging bunt in the third inning. Carter made a nice catch and just got his arm out of the way, avoiding a potential collision with Zobrist who was hustling to first.

Six of the first seven Yankees recorded hits to open the game, knocking Brett Anderson out after just a third of an inning. He was booed as he left the game accompanied by the trainer due to lower back tightness. Insult to injury.

Castro, who was with the Cubs through the lean times before they finally broke the curse. Historically, he's a poor hitter in May (.667 career OPS), but not this May. So far, anyway.

Cubs pitchers have allowed 38 earned runs in the first inning this season for an MLB-worst 11.40 ERA.

Aaron Judge's hitting streak snapped after hitting cleanup for the first time in Yankees career

BY MIKE MAZZEO

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Updated: Sunday, May 7, 2017, 1:57 AM

CHICAGO — The Judge has been moved into the cleanup spot.

Aaron Judge, who started the season by hitting eighth, batted fourth for the first time in his career on Saturday night against the Cubs. The Yankees’ 24-year-old rookie slugger, who has hit 13 homers, went 0-for-5 and saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end, but his team still won 11-6.

“I think you give players more as they continue to do well,” Joe Girardi said before the game. “You don’t want to throw guys into the fire right away, so sometimes you’ll take your time in moving guys (up). And you have (Matt) Holliday who’s out of the lineup, Sanchy (Gary Sanchez) who’s not gotten it going yet, and that’s part of it too. But I think you give him bits and pieces and if you remember I started Sanchy seventh and eighth last year and then we moved him up as he continued to swing the bat well.”

The always modest Judge downplayed the promotion in the batting order.

“I really didn’t hope to (move up) at all. I was happy where I was,” Judge said. “The guys in front of me were getting on base, and you can’t really complain when you’ve got guys like (Starlin) Castro, (Chase) Headley, Sanchez and (Jacoby) Ellsbury in front of you hitting, so I didn’t mind it at all. Just as long as my name was in the lineup, I was happy.”

He has a fan in former Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, who had high praise for the youngster on the FOX broadcast.

“(Judge) looks like an all-pro NFL tight end but moves around like a shortstop; a hybrid between Dave Winfield and Manny Ramírez,” A-Rod said.

Judge went 2-for-4 in his debut at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon.

“It was awesome. I loved every minute of it. Good atmosphere,” Judge said. “The fans were in it the whole game. It was pretty fun.”

Playing right field, however, proved to be difficult, as it is for every outfielder when the wind is blowing around at the Friendly Confines. Judge had trouble with a Wilson Contreras’ fly ball that he dropped for a three-base error on Friday afternoon.

“I found out why it’s the Windy City,” Judge joked.

Judge is glad that Sanchez, who had his own scintillating stretch last season, is back in the lineup after missing 21 games due to injury. Sanchez had two hits in his second game back on Saturday night.

“He’s our best hitter,” Judge said. “I’m excited he’s back and I’m excited for what he’s going to do this year. It’s going to be fun.”

Asked why he thinks Sanchez is the best hitter on the team, Judge replied: “He just is. Just based on his swing, his approach, what he can do at the plate. Just what I’ve seen over the past 3-4 years playing with him (in the minors and majors).”

Led by Judge’s bat, glove and arm, the Yankees are off to a surprising start.

“We don’t listen to what other people say,” Judge said. “We’re here to take care of our business and do what we need to do on the field.”

JACOBY SOON?

Jacoby Ellsbury (elbow) was not in the lineup for a fourth straight game, but Joe Girardi thinks Ellsbury will be able to start on Sunday night.

“We’re hoping that he’s a player tomorrow,” Girardi said. “I want him to kind of pick it up today and throw a little bit more. He said he feels a lot better than he did yesterday, so I would think he’ll be a full player tomorrow.”

Ellsbury served as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning on Friday afternoon and drew a walk.

“I’m going to hit today and throw, and the plan is to shoot for tomorrow,” Ellsbury said.

Matt Holliday, who hasn’t played the field yet this season, could get a start at first on Sunday night against lefty Jon Lester, Joe Girardi said.

Aaron Hicks making push to supplant Ellsbury in center

By Ken Davidoff May 7, 2017 | 2:45am

CHICAGO — Well, obviously Aaron Hicks needs to be playing just as often as his fellow outfielders for now, and he’s on a fast track to supplant Jacoby Ellsbury as the everyday center fielder.

Do we even need to discuss this one?

Hicks, the Yankees’ fourth outfielder in name, contributed bigly to the Yankees’ 11-6 pounding of the Cubs at Wrigley Field, another milepost in this increasingly startling campaign. As the starting center fielder, Hicks tied a career high with four hits, contributing two singles, a double and a three-run homer. For the season, the second-year Yankee now owns a ridiculous .355/.468/.710 slash line.

“We’ve talked about rotating these guys and finding time for Hicksy,” manager Joe Girardi acknowledged after the game. “He has played well all year.”

“I’m just going to be ready for the opportunities that I get,” Hicks said. “Of course, the better you play, the more opportunities you’re going to get.”

Ellsbury, who hasn’t started a game since May 1 because of a nerve problem in his left elbow, hopes to be ready to return to the Yankees’ lineup for their series finale Sunday night, when they’ll go for the sweep of the reigning World Series champs against former Red Sox nemesis Jon Lester. It stands to reason that

Page 12: 2017 New York Yankees - Cincinnati Redscincinnati.reds.mlb.com/documents/0/8/6/228846086/Reds_vs_New_Y… · 2017 New York Yankees Record: 19-9 ... CA 40 Luis Severino ... 76 Domingo

Girardi will rest the lefty-swinging Brett Gardner against the southpaw Lester, against whom he historically struggles, with the switch-hitting Hicks taking Gardner’s spot in left field.

With mostly right-handers coming down the pike, however, Hicks must continue to play regularly, if not necessarily every day. He should start at least one of the Yankees’ two games at Cincinnati, with the Reds starting righties Rookie Davis (a former Yankees prospect) and Tim Adleman. Go ahead and give the world-beating Aaron Judge a night off. As the Yankees exemplified Saturday, when Judge — in his first time hitting cleanup — went 0-for-5, they can thrive offensively even when their Paul Bunyan doesn’t have it.

In the bigger picture, the Yankees face a potentially delightful dilemma of employing too many quality outfielders. Clint Frazier and Dustin Fowler are both putting up good numbers at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Perhaps that depth will be compromised if the Yankees use some of it to acquire the White Sox’s Jose Quintana, Texas’ Yu Darvish or another available frontline starting pitcher at the trade deadline.

So let’s just deal with the immediate issue: Hicks, in the wake of a horrendous 2016 — he introduced himself to the Yankees’ universe with a ghastly .217/.281/.336 slash line in 327 at-bats over 123 games — has surpassed any reasonable expectation. He has excelled from both sides of the plate, going .361/.511/.778 as a lefty and .346/.400/.692 as a righty. He has played acceptable defense all around the outfield.

Girardi attributed Hicks’ development to “maturing as a player. Understanding, ‘If I don’t play every day, what [do] I have to do to be ready?’ ”

“I feel good,” said Hicks, who explained that he pointed to the visitors’ dugout after hitting his eighth-inning homer because CC Sabathia predicted it. “I feel like my plate appearances have been better. I have more of an idea of what I want to do in every at-bat and it’s working out so far.”

Ellsbury — in Year 4 of his seven-year, $153-million albatross of a contract — is hitting an acceptable .282/.351/.412, rates that put him on a pace to post his best Yankees season. Nevertheless, you would be optimistic to think that Ellsbury, at age 33, can maintain such productive rates.

You bet on youth prevailing here, right? Hicks is just 27, a large reason why he intrigued the Yankees back in November 2015, when they dealt catcher John Ryan Murphy to the Twins for him. Last year’s growing pains hurt the Yankees real bad, yet they still control him through 2019.

This can be a gradual process. There is no harm in getting guys steady rest, and every time the Yankees face a lefty, either Ellsbury or Gardner should sit in favor of Hicks and Judge. The key at present is to ensure that Hicks doesn’t lag behind the other three outfielders in playing time.

As usual, an injury somewhere might resolve this issue. Except I hesitate to even call it an issue. It’s a no-brainer, one the Yankees should be thrilled to execute.

Why Yankees’ Aaron Judge has been heavily icing his knees

By George A. King III May 7, 2017 | 2:36am

CHICAGO — Aaron Judge says there is nothing alarming about the mountain of ice packs that smothered each knee following the Yankees’ 11-6 win over the Cubs on Saturday night at Wrigley Field.

“Been doing this the past couple of days,” Judge said. “I have been sliding and falling on the knees. It’s just maintenance. There is a long season ahead of us.”

Since Judge hit fifth during Friday’s 3-2 victory, moving one rung up the lineup ladder to cleanup wasn’t a drastic move, but it’s not often a rookie hits fourth for the Yankees. But that is where Judge, the Yankees’ hottest hitter, was against Cubs lefty Brett Anderson.

“He is swinging so well and swinging so well against left-handers,’’ Girardi said of the power-hitting Judge, who was hitting .337 (fifth in the AL) with an AL leading 13 homers and 27 RBIs (second in AL) overall and .429 with three homers and six RBIs versus lefties. “I thought I would move him up and move Gary [Sanchez] down a little bit who hasn’t had a lot of at-bats lately.’’

Judge went 0-for-5 and Sanchez 2-for-4 with an RBI in his second game off the DL.

Regardless of the experience level, Girardi said he believes in moving hot hitters closer to the top. Judge has hit eighth (four times), seventh (six), sixth (eight) and fifth (seven).

“I think you give players more as they continue to do well,’’ Girardi said. “You don’t want to throw guys into the fire right away. You have [Matt] Holliday, who is out of the lineup, and Sanchy has not got going yet, and that is part of it, too.’’

Yankees deliver 2nd emphatic message to world champs

By George A. King III May 6, 2017 | 10:46pm | Updated

CHICAGO — They ripped the Cubs’ heart out with Brett Gardner’s biceps Friday. Saturday, they gouged the defending World Series champs’ scalps with ice picks disguised as bats.

So what do the Yankees have for long-time nemesis and Cubs starter Jon Lester on Sunday evening in front of a national television audience?

While it’s difficult to see the Yankees spanking Lester the way they did fellow lefty Brett Anderson on the way to an 11-6 victory in front of 40,735 muted customers at Wrigley Field Saturday night, the Yankees have clearly been the better team through the first two tilts of a three-game series versus the defending World Series title holders.

“It’s awesome, it’s good to come here and compete against a really good team,’’ said former Cub Starlin Castro, who went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and is batting .381 after entering the night with an AL-best average of .367. “They are the World Series (winners). It tells us how good we can be and how good we are.’’

Backed by a five-run first inning assault against Anderson led by doubles from Brett Gardner, Castro and Chase Headley, rookie lefty Jordan Montgomery cruised to a win that upped his record to 2-1.

Aaron Hicks went 4-for-5 and hit a three-run homer (his sixth) in the eighth.

Handling Lester won’t be easy since he is 13-6 with a 3.78 ERA in 29 games against them with the Red Sox. Lester, who is 1-1 with a 3.67 ERA this year, last saw the Yankees on June 28, 2014 when he allowed an unearned run in eight innings.

Page 13: 2017 New York Yankees - Cincinnati Redscincinnati.reds.mlb.com/documents/0/8/6/228846086/Reds_vs_New_Y… · 2017 New York Yankees Record: 19-9 ... CA 40 Luis Severino ... 76 Domingo

Yet, the 19-9 Yankees were blanked for eight frames Friday before Gardner’s three-run homer in the ninth stole a win.

Luis Severino will oppose Lester in his first-ever start against the Cubs in his short career.

The AL East-leading Yankees’ fourth straight victory enabled them to at least win two of three from the Cubs and it is their fourth consecutive series victory. The Yankees took two of three from the Red Sox, Orioles and Blue Jays before winning the first two games against the Cubs.

Montgomery, who hadn’t won since April 17 (two starts), worked a season-high 6 ²/₃ innings. He gave up three runs (two earned) and two hits. Montgomery’s 100 pitches were his most in five big league starts.

“You still need to throw. You don’t want to get too relaxed,’’ said Montgomery, who wasn’t smothered by Wrigley’s history or the Cubs’ loaded lineup. “Those guys can put big numbers if you put it down the middle.’’

Anderson, who left the game in the first inning with back spasms, gave up five runs and five hits and is 2-2.

Only Tommy Layne’s awful eighth inning when he gave up three runs and three hits made the score look closer than it was. Cubs manager Joe Maddon’s bullpen was so spent he used catcher Miguel Montero to throw the ninth and he didn’t allow a run.

“You never know where the offense is going to come but you feel it’s going to come from some spot in the order because these guys have been so spread out,’’ manager Joe Girardi said of his lineup that produced 14 hits and went 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position. “Tonight it was Hicks and Castro, really big nights.’’

The pitcher who shot through Yankees’ system is showing why

By Ken Davidoff May 6, 2017 | 8:33PM

CHICAGO — At the completion of the Yankees’ thrilling, 3-2 victory over the Cubs on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, neither Brett Gardner (the man who hit the game-winning, ninth-inning homer) nor Aroldis Chapman (the man who protected that lead) received the lineup card and a game ball from manager Joe Girardi.

Those souvenirs went to Jonathan Holder.

For when Gardner jacked that three-run blast to right field off Cubs backup closer Hector Rendon, and when Chapman threw a shutout bottom of the ninth, it was Holder who received credit for his first major-league victory after throwing a shutout eighth.

The win came from the “vulture” variety, what they call it when you enter a game with your team losing and then benefit from a rally. Yet Holder should not be regarded as any sort of lucky duck. Rather, the right-hander has turned his last name into his value. Most times this season, he has held the opponent at bay, and by doing so, he has become a valuable piece of Girardi’s bullpen.

“I’m excited,” Holder said Saturday. “Just trying to do one pitch at a time. Do whatever I can to help the team win.”

If he speaks clichés, he at least lives up to them with his performance. Entering Saturday night’s Yankees-Cubs game, the 23-year-old had a 2.70 ERA in 12 appearances totaling 10 innings this season. Most encouraging for the team, he had struck out 11 and walked one in that time span.

In small-sample-size theater, he had advanced leaps and bounds from the raw youngster who worked his way up the ladder last year from Single-A Tampa all the way to the Yankees. His 101 strikeouts and seven walks in 65 ¹/₃ minor-league innings forced the Yankees’ hands, what with them still in a pennant race. Then he earned a September promotion to the big leagues and didn’t help his team’s long-shot chances, recording a 5.40 ERA while fanning five and walking four in eight appearances totaling 8 ¹/₃ innings.

Asked to explain the wide gulf in results from September 2016 to April and May 2017, Holder said, “I think I didn’t have many appearances last year, but the comfort level. Having that experience last year. Being able to come out and be more comfortable this year.”

“I just think he’s more comfortable,” Girardi agreed.

“He’s more confident. He understands what he needs to do in certain situations. I also think it’s not the end of the year, either. I think he was probably fatigued at the end of last year. You know, that first time you give a young player that extra month, it’s a pretty big deal. So I think it’s just him maturing a little bit. Understanding what he needs to do.”

Holder has proven to be a quick learner, quicker than most of his contemporaries. A Yankees selection in the sixth round of the 2014 draft, he is one of just three players from that round — the others being Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Curtis and the Dodgers’ Brock Stewart — to even make the major leagues. Both Curtis and Stewart struggled in 2016 cameos, so Holder is the only guy from his round to provide any sort of positive value.

Furthermore, Holder was the second Mississippi State product popped by the Yankees in that 2014 draft. Their first pick, second-rounder Jacob Lindgren, pitched alongside Holder on the Bulldogs.

Unfortunately for the left-hander Lindgren, who pitched in seven games for the 2015 Yankees, he underwent Tommy John surgery last season and is now rehabilitating on the payroll of the Braves, who signed Lindgren after the Yankees released him.

Though Holder expressed sympathy for Lindgren, he described his quick progress as “very exciting. Something that I haven’t really thought about until you just said something. I guess it is pretty cool.”

It is pretty cool for the Yankees, too, who have themselves their deepest bullpen in quite a while, with Holder establishing himself as an important part of that.
