Every 40 seconds, someone has a stroke.

One in three Americans has some form of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the nation’s most costly illness, accounting for $298 billion in direct and indirect costs each year.

Step-by-Step Guide for Coaches

1. Register as a Coach (previously called Team Captain) online at

www.HeartWalkBayArea.org

2. Attend your company’s Coach Kickoff.

3. Recruit 10+ fundraising walkers, and help them register online.

4. Kick-off your team with a quick “heartwalking” activity to raise heart

beats.

5. Post photos on social media of you and your team “heartwalking”

when you make donation requests.

6. Encourage each walker to make a personal donation and raise a

specific amount of money.

7. Set a team fundraising goal. For example: 15 walkers x $250 = $3,750

8. Identify one individual on your team who will strive to raise $1,000+.

9. Encourage your walkers along the way and have fun achieving your

goals!

Tips to be a Successful Coach

LEAD BY EXAMPLE WITH YOUR PERSONAL FUNDRAISING EFFORTS BY TAKING

THESE FOUR ACTIONS:

1. Make a PERSONAL DONATION to your campaign.

2. Set a personal goal of $250+.

Raising $1,000+ will get you into our exclusive VIP Tent.

3. Personalize your Heart Walk page with a picture or video and share your

“why”.

People who add a photo and share why they walk raise 10x more.

4. Ask for donations! The #1 reason people donate is because they are asked.

Send email messages to friends, family, vendors, suppliers and

co-workers asking them to support you with a donation.

What is the Heart Walk?

The Heart Walk is a non-competitive 3-mile walk that encourages people to take steps toward a heart-healthy lifestyle. This is

an opportunity for corporate teams and individuals to improve their health by raising funds and walking to help fight heart

disease and stroke. The Heart Walk is a free event and is open to the community.

Where do the proceeds go?

Funds raised by Heart Walk participants fund life-saving heart disease and stroke research, community programs and advocacy

efforts. For more information on the American Heart Association, visit www.Heart.org.

What is a Company Leader, Coach and Walker?

Company Leader: Organizes the Heart Walk efforts at your company.

Coach: Helps by recruiting walkers in their department or personal network to be on their team.

Walker: Helps raise funds and awareness through one-on-one contact with co-workers, friends and family.

Top Walker: Participant who raises $1,000 or more! For more information on Top Walker benefits, see page 10.

Who receives a red/white cap?

Red caps recognize heart disease survivors and white caps recognize stroke survivors. On the day of the event, survivors are

encouraged to visit the Survivor Tent to pick up their cap and share their story.
