2017 Bulls for Sale
Join us for a beer and bbq at the cattle yards from 4pm onwards. The bulls will be on display and Julian will give a quick talk on “Making your own selection index with BreedObject”, during which he will present a comparison of sale bulls and breed leading sires and their value in systems based on weaner and feeder steer production.
The Helmsman sale will conclude at the event.
SALE PROCESS - HELMSMAN AUCTIONThe Helmsman Auction system combines the good features of both the auction system and sale by private treaty. Buyers get the opportunity to bid on and buy any bull in the offering at market value without any pressure.
Bulls are for sale simultaneously with a published reserve price. Place your bid early to bid at the reserve price. Subsequent bids can be made by other parties in increments of $250.
Prospective buyers that cannot attend the BBQ may view and bid on the bulls by prior appointment. Should early bids be over-bid, we will attempt to contact underbidders not present at the BBQ to give them the opportunity to increase their bid. To make the most of the Helmsman system, we recommend you attend or send a proxy.
Bidding will conclude at 6pm at the BBQ on 3rd March.
BEER, BULLS & BBQ - 3rd MARCH 2017
We are pretty chuffed with this years line up of bulls. Every one of them has got something to offer. I’d be happy to use any of these bulls in our commercial herd, and there’s one that’ll probably stay on as a stud sire for us. Structurally they are all pretty strong, the poorest scores being 7’s (still considered acceptable), scored by only 4 bulls,.
The group averages for all growth EBVs are the top 25% percentile band for the breed. Similarly, the group averages for carcass traits are in the top 20-25% of the breed. We’ll be pushing the carcass traits harder in the years to come to ensure Black Star genetics are well suited in the Value Based Marketing environment.
Thanks to the selection pressure on the Black Star Herd, genetic progress is rapid. A tough Summer/Autumn last year prompted us to sell the bottom half of the stud herd so we now have no sub-par performers, no adverse genetic condition carriers, and no cows over 6 yo. 10 of next years bull calves are currently in the top 5% of the breed for 400 day growth, 5 of them are in the top 1%.
We are also really excited about the females we are accumulating through our own breeding program and astute purchases. 2016 saw our first embryo transfer program get off to a very successful start with all recips holding their embryo. ET will enable us to produce more great bulls from the best of our cows.
Hope to see you at our BBQ, if not this year then next time!
Cheers,
Julian Carroll

ABOUT THE BULLS
PREPARATIONThe bulls are prepared for sale without grain or pellets. They were weaned last Autumn onto irrigated millet, pellets and hay, then spent the winter on phalaris, the Spring grazing oats and this summer on a mix dry and irrigated pastures and some ad lib silage through February.
REGISTRATION STATUSAll bulls are registered in either the Angus Herd book (HBR) or the Angus Performance Register (APR). All bulls heifer progeny will be eligible for export protocols.
GENETIC CONDITIONSAll bulls are tested free or are free by inheritance of all known adverse genetic conditions.
HEALTHAll bulls are vaccinated with 7-in-1, Pestigard and Vibrovac. Bulls have been tested to ensure they are not persistently infected (PI) with Pestivirus (BVD).
STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENTSAll bulls have been independently assessed by Liam Cardile of Beef Excel. This catalogue features Structural EBVs which are explained on one of the back pages.
FERTILITYAll bulls have been vet checked by Dr Brad Goonan BVSc using the standardised BULLCHECK ™ examination.
All bulls are certified fertile at the time of sale.
Testing included:
Scrotal Measurement and testicle consistency•
General physical evaluation •
Examination of the reproductive tract•
Crush side semen assessment•
Sperm morphology (in the lab)•
Feel free to contact Brad with any questions about the examination or results: 0447 874 567.

Note: Structural and Fertility Assessments are most relevant at the time of sale and not a guarantee of the long-term soundness of the bull.
OUR TIPS FOR BRINGING YOUR BULL HOMEIt is worth considering that the transport, new surroundings and separation from his cohorts will be the most stressful time in your new bull’s life to date.
To mitigate this stress, consider having some suitable companions (such as steers) in the yard ready for his arrival. Leaving him by himself in a yard will heighten his stress and may lead to permanent damage to his relationship with you and other humans. Induct him gradually to your other bulls by keeping him in a neighbouring paddock until they settle.
These bulls have been handled gently since birth and especially closely in recent months. Please note that quietness around people should not be mistaken for safe around people. As with any bull, take care in confined spaces such as yards.
These bulls have no exposure to horses or working dogs so be patient and allow extra time when first exposing them.
REFERENCE SIRES
PRIME JUGGERNAUT
Juggernaut holds the record price for a yearling bull. He is very stylish Regent son with great butt shape, docility and structure. He has an excellent combination of carcass and performance traits.
While his (and his sons) birth weight is higher than the breed average, I had no trouble calving down heifers joined to him.
We have 4 sons catalogued: L9, L12, L14 & L17.
Another elite Regent son with impeccable structure, softness and athleticism. Add to that impressive fat coverage and the currently the highest IMF of any semen sire, Gatsby’s already high reputation is still on the rise.
Two sons are catalogued: L8 and L26.
MILWILLAH GATSBY
TE MANIA BERKLEY
With over 5,000 registered progeny, Berkley is a breed legend.
He combines performance, carcass and easy calving.
One son catalogued: L4.
CARABAR DOCKLANDS
Another widely used bull with nearly 3,000 registered progeny. Docklands combines calving ease, performance and fat cover with a moderate Mature Cow Weight EBV.
One son catalogued: L15.
GRANITE RIDGE THOMAS
Owned by Irelands Angus, Thomas is a slick, large framed bull with a good balance of growth and IMF.
Noted for his docility.
One son catalogued: L35.

RAW ASSESSMENTSThe Beef Class Structural Assessment System uses a 1–9 scoring system for feet and leg structure;
A score of 5 is ideal.
A score of 4 or 6 shows slight variation from ideal, but this includes most animals and would be acceptable in any breeding program.
A score of 3 or 7 shows greater variation but would be acceptable in most commercial programs.
A score of 2 or 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked closely before purchasing.
A score of 1 or 9 should not be catalogued and are considered culls.
STRUCTURAL INFORMATION
To provide our customers with as much information as possible, we’ve included both structural EBVs and raw structural assessment scores.
Raw structural assessments are common and appear in most catalogues or as a supplementary sheet at the sale. They are conducted by an independent assessor - in our case Liam Cardile from Beef Excel. They provide information specific to the animal catalogued.
Structural EBV’s are newer development and combine the raw assessment with assessments from the animals relatives, therefore presenting you with greater insight into the genetic package of that animal beyond its own genetic expression.
STRUCTURAL EBV’SOnly Animals with at least 40% accuracy for a Structural EBV are reported. More positive EBVs indicate a higher genetic potential for the desirable form of the structural trait compared to the average for the analysis.
The five traits currently analysed (and the flags associated with the EBV) are:
FA: Front Feet Angle (ST indicates steep angle, SH indicates shallow angle)
FC: Front Feet Claw Set (OD indicates open divergent claws, SC indicates scissor claws)
RA: Rear Feet Angle (ST indicates steep angle, SH indicates shallow angle)
RH: Rear Leg Hind View (BL indicates bow legged, CH indicates cow hocked)
RS: Rear Leg Side View (SR indicates straight rear legs, SI indicates sickle hocked)
The EBV flags only appear against animals that have more extreme, negative breeding values. The flags indicate the type of undesirable structural variation the animal tends to have. For example, a bull with a flag of ‘ST’ next to its FA EBV may produce about 35% or more progeny with steep feet angle; while a bull with a flag of ‘SH’ may produce 35% or more progeny with shallow feet angle (see example top right).
Using EBVs and flags in combination will assist breeders in making the right decision to improve the structural soundness of their herd.
