CAC Highlights from 2017

• CAC Goals – Goals will be communicated to the congregation. Pastor Patti has also asked that a scripture be attached to each goal.

• 2017 Grace Election Ballot committee – Committee will begin process four months prior to the ballot submission. Dennis and Dawn to serve as outgoing CAC members on the nominating committee.

• Luther League and Sunday school funds – The Sunday School checking account will be closed and funds moved to the general checking account. Funds will be tracked separately. Jason to follow up on Luther League funds.

• CAC approved the purchase of an ice maker for the kitchen. Women of the church agreed to pay half the cost at $500. The remaining will be taken from the church building fund.

• It was approved to enter a one-year contract for One Call Now at a cost of $552. Automated calls can be generated with this system for reminders and changes to the schedule.

• There will be a special offering for Tim Gerber. We will attempt to get matching funds from Thrivent, and the mid-week offering for Lenten Services will be going to the Tim Gerber family also.

• The NALC logo is to be placed on both sides of the sign in the front of the church.

• Sandy Riemesch’s position will be changed from hourly to salary with no change to her work schedule.

• Kristen Davis distributed information on the growth of the Sunday School. It was noted that there has been an increase in Sunday School attendance which is one of the goals that the CAC has established.

• Discussion and then Council approved the decision to set the annual date for confirmation as the first Sunday in May.

• It was moved to amend the constitution to reduce CAC from 15 to 9 members by attrition over a period of 3 years- 3 members (instead of 5) of the congregation will be elected to serve 3 years in 11/17, 11/18, and 11/19. Motion approved. Voting for this change to the constitution will be held on Sept. 3, 2017 and Oct. 8, 2017. Congregation approved this change in a special congregational meeting on Sept. 17, 2017. Also approved on this date by the Congregation was the call of Pastor Cathi to a 3- year term at Grace.

• Passing out water at the Community Days parade was a huge success. 575 bottles of water were donated by Plastipak. The only cost involved was for the labels, which were taken care of by Tom and Shirley Schindel. It was decided that we will make this an annual event. It was well received in the community and a great way for us to invite the community to worship at Grace.

• Hands of Hope- Pastor Cathi was asked that Grace participate in a program called Hands of Hope. Our church would be responsible to prepare and serve an evening meal in Sidney one time per month. The Lay/Witness committee gathered information and it was decided to provide one lunchtime meal on a Saturday once every other month.

• Pastor Cathi was approached by the Wilson Medical Center and asked to become a reserve on-call chaplain for emergencies when another chaplain is not available. Council approved that Pastor Cathi be permitted to become a reserve on-call chaplain.

• The motion was made to approve the purchase of a coffee pot for the kitchen.

• All committee Sunday meetings were discontinued. Committees will schedule their meetings and notify the church office as to the date and time so that this information can be placed in the bulletin.

• The new NALC constitution was shared with CAC and it will be used to compare our current constitution with the NALC constitution. The Common Confession of the NALC was also distributed to the CAC. It has been recommended by the NALC that this be included in our constitution.

• Upon review of a book from the Revive organization, it was felt that Revive Ohio’s practices are inconsistent with the biblical, creedal, and confessional positions of NALC and GELC. It was felt that while these are good knowledgeable people who are helping others, Grace should not be used as a base for this organization.

• Jason Platfoot was authorized by council to purchase 2 industrial sweepers. The sweepers that we had were not in working order.

• Motion was made to add a Christmas Eve family oriented service at 7PM. Motion carried by unanimous decision.

• The 2018 CAC executive committee will be renewing the membership list. Dawn Beelman will be on in an advisory capacity.

• The recommendation of Dawn Beelman was to continue working with Perry for the copier. This will save us about $200 per month. Recommendation was approved by council.

Pastor’s Comments

By The Rev. Dr. Cathi Braasch, STS

For the Annual Meeting

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church – January 14, 2018

Beloved People of Grace,

It’s been quite a year, hasn’t it?

Goals set early last year have been met. The regular ministries of the

congregation have been carried out faithfully. We’ve experimented with some

approaches to improving communications and coordination of efforts between

ministries and those who serve in them, and we’ve learned from those efforts.

As I’ve often said over the past seven months, Grace does so many

things well! If I started repeating them here, I’d just be repeating what you’ve

been reading in the monthly newsletter, the minutes of the Congregation

Administrative Council (CAC) and various committees and ministries. Now,

the race is on to strengthen Grace in all aspects of ministry, to get everything

and everyone working together as one, as the body of Christ that we are meant

to be as His church.

Grace took a bold step to extend interim ministry into a three-year

term call that, with the help of God, is bringing stability while the

congregation prepares for a long, healthy pastorate when my time among you

is finished. The timeline for calling my successor is to begin receiving names

of pastoral candidates by June 2019. To make that happen, we’ll want to

begin assembling the congregation’s profile – the documents that prospective

pastors and families will look at – starting this time next year. We’ll want to

make the strongest case possible for a pastor to consider serving here – and

we have the next 12 months to make sure that all is working together to make

Grace the place where the finest pastoral candidates and families will want to

come, minister, thrive and stay.

When running the race of faith, it helps to keep our eye on the finish

line. I’m speaking of the eternal future that Christ has prepared for us. With

eternity in mind and zeal for making disciples, the challenges of ministry

don’t weigh so heavily and the race doesn’t seem so exhausting.

As your pastor, I’m looking at the next twelve months as part of that

long-distance race of faith. Christ will condition us with the Word and the

Sacrament. Worship, prayer and Bible study will be our conditioning

program. The Lord’s Table will be our training table. The Holy Spirit will

breathe new life and energy into us. The One true God who brought Grace

about will continue to provide what is truly needful for His mission to be

accomplished.

Hebrews 12:1-3 (see the box at right) says it all. Let’s run this race

together, Grace, in Jesus’ name.

Pastor Cathi

Discipline in a

Long-Distance

Race (Hebrews 12:1-3)

12 1-3 Do you see what this

means—all these pioneers who

blazed the way, all these veterans

cheering us on? It means we’d

better get on with it.

Strip down, start running—and

never quit! No extra spiritual fat,

no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes

on Jesus, who both began and

finished this race we’re in.

Study how he did it. Because he

never lost sight of where he was

headed—that exhilarating finish

in and with God—he could put up

with anything along the way:

Cross, shame, whatever. And

now he’s there, in the place of

honor, right alongside God.

When you find yourselves

flagging in your faith, go over

that story again, item by item,

that long litany of hostility he

plowed through. That will shoot

adrenaline into your souls!

The Message (MSG)

Friendship Thank you for all of the support for the fellowship time. The donuts, other goodies and the time together seem to be enjoyed by all. Also thank you to everyone who has volunteered to be greeters for the year. The friendly smile, warm hand shake and maybe even a hug is a wonderful way to start worship. Friendship Committee hosted a benefit breakfast for Tim Gerber on Sunday March 19th between early service and Sunday School. The committee received positive feed-back of not serving coffee and donuts during the special Congregational meeting as well as the regular Quarterly meetings. Friendship Committee discussed with Lay/Witness Committee new handout material for visitors to our church which is also used by the Lay Witness committee when they visit non-members in our area. Items were ordered and are now being used.

Lay/Witness Ministry Members- Tom Elsass (CAC liaison) and Barb Elsass, Linda Jenkins (President), Marie Heintz, Iva Lenhart, Sandy Roach, Dawn and Ryan Scott, and Susan Ware (Secretary). Our thanks to Marge Beam and Carol Penrod for their service with the Lay Ministry team. Carol served on our ministry through much of 2017 prior to her move to Columbus. Marge has served for many, many, many years in many capacities, always willing to do whatever job needed to be done. We thank you ladies! Meeting time- We meet the second Sunday of the month during the Sunday School hour. The work of Lay Witness Ministry includes- -Members work to keep the shut-in list updated, visit shut-ins, and serve communion to those who wish to receive it. In 2017 members made 104 visits and served 63 communions.

-We place greeting cards at the back of the church for the congregation to sign as we remember our shut-ins, soldiers, members who are ill or hospitalized, and families of members who have lost loved ones. We also purchase and distribute Stephen's Ministry materials to families who have lost loved ones. -We sponsor and plan activities for the Young at Heart group. -We purchase the contents for the baby gift bags that are delivered to the parents of newborn babies in the congregation. This past

year Tom and Barb Elsass applied and received Thrivent monies to make these purchases. - We help with the Backpack food project. Watch the bulletin to see how you can help with this program. We do need volunteers to

help pack the backpacks. -We continue to support the community Thanksgiving and Christmas in the Village meals and activities. -We are participating in the "Hands of Hope" program at the Alpha Center in Sidney.

-Last February Linda and her daughter baked and decorated heart shaped cookies. We labeled them with information about our church and Sunday School schedule and passed them out in front of the post office and Family Dollar. -On May 4th. which was the National Day of Prayer, Linda planned and printed a guide for praying throughout the church. -Members prepared a care package to send to Tim Gerber. -Last summer Susan applied for Thrivent monies that were used in our shut-in ministry. Members planted flowers and produce in

the church garden that were shared with our shut-ins and delivered to area rest homes. Greeting cards, cross craft packets, and small glow in the dark crosses were also purchased. We purchased tablecloths for the picnic tables in the shelter and paid for food and supplies for the Young at Heart picnic. -We continue to provide copies of the funeral planning guide on the shelves at the back of the church and encourage you to

complete pages 2-4 and return them to the church office. Keep the rest of your booklet in your files to provide your family with helpful information.

As you can see we are a small group with much to do. As we plan for 2018, we encourage you to join us and share the love of our Lord Jesus Christ as we reach out in service to others. ~ Susan Ware

Luther League We hosted the monthly fellowship breakfast every month from Jan to June to raise money for our mission trip coming up in June. In January we went to The Ark Museum with 8 members. In February we went to the Nursing Home in Sidney to visit & then went out for pizza. In March we provided one of the Lenten meals and in April we had the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the church. Before the hunt, Rita told the story of Jesus’ resurrection. In June 2017, we attended our mission trip. This year we had 13 people attend. We went to The Foothills Camp & Retreat Center in Louisville, TN. We worked with at the camp as it was the “Family Camp” week with over 150 campers besides us. We prepared, served and cleaned up for approximately 120 people for 3 meals a day all week then cleaned the facilities and grounds at the campground. We did brush clearing for a family that had a terminally ill member and needed some assistance and we helped clean up the old parsonage and grounds around it that was being sold by the church since Pastor Michael and his family moved to the campground managers house. We met people who gave their testimonies of where Christ had guided their lives and were saved during their military service. We received cards of appreciation from one of the Pastors that was a camper at the campground to let us know how impressed they were with the group and the behavior and work ethic that was displayed throughout the week. We attended the evening fun activities at the campground after our evening devotional time and small group time. We were given free food tickets for the snack shack that they had. We served where ever they could use our willing hands. We did take a “fun” day and went into Pigeon Forge to see the shops and sites. We went to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and had a great Italian meal while there. We had morning devotions and spent time alone in scripture before breakfast and then went off to our work sites. We had group meetings with personal testimonials each night before our small group time. We presented a slide-show and talked about our trip at church when we came back. In October, we began meeting again and have not picked a definite place to go for our mission trip in 2018 yet as there have been several natural disasters lately that we can be of assistance in rebuilding, and we would like to assure we can be very busy serving when we are there. We will be going on our mission trip in 2018 on June 17-23. We went caroling with the Gospel Gang in early December. In December we sold homemade candy and held a free family photo shoot and printed off the pictures for the families while we were shopping that evening. We did our Adopt-A-Family shopping and wrapping. We finished the evening with some games. We also held our monthly breakfasts to start raising money for our trip in June. Each month we held two meetings at the church for Bible study and planning and had between 9 & 12 members attend each time. We had pizza brought in for several of these meetings and played games after we ate and had our meetings. We meet the first and third Wednesday of each month for a meeting and short Bible Study. All kids in grades 9-12 are welcome to join us. We have a very active and enthusiastic group that enjoys being of service to the church and community whenever possible. Our leaders are Jerry Mann, Rita Metz & Chelsea Frederick. Elected officers for the 2017-2018 year are: President – Christina Bowen, Vice President – Trent Platfoot, Treasurer – Jarrett Yinger & Ian Platfoot & Secretary to report to the CAC Liaison and put notes in the bulletin is Caroline Frieders. ~ Rita Metz

Thrivent Choice Committee Thrivent had the privilege of serving several needs this past year. 1. Two church members were helped with medical expenses. 2. Money was given to the Haiti team to help buy rice and beans for the people of Haiti and to help be able to provide 4 meals a

week to the schools rather than just three. 3. Thrivent helped to support the Back-Pack Program. 4. The Luther League received money to shop for a Christmas family. 5. There was a need to supply money for an additional family for Christmas to which we gave the funds needed. 6. A Jackson Center family was helped with money for medical expenses. We feel Thrivent Choice was able to supply funds for some much-needed help in 2017 and we are thankful this program is

available to do that. We would like to remind all Thrivent members to check to see if they have Choice dollars to donate as emails are no longer being

sent to remind you. It is necessary to go online and check yourself. Also, anyone who has Thrivent accounts remember that you can apply for $250 grant to be used toward not for profit funding (ie.

Supplies for the food pantry, food and supplies for prison ministry weekends, hats and gloves for Veterans). If you have any questions regarding how to apply, please contact Cindy Davis or Barb Wical.

Worship Committee The Worship committee members include Pastor Cathi, Rhonda Wildermuth, Melody Schneider, Dawn Heppard, Toni Leininger, Cheryl Burch, Nancy McName, Rita Metz, Cindy Davis, Rick Russell, Ann Wildermuth, Marlaine Schneider, and CAC liaison Kristen Davis. The Worship committee oversees worship services including selection of liturgy and music, charge of the baptismal and communion arrangements, and coordination of deacons and lay readers. The committee supports the Pastor in planning of church calendar, making arrangements for church festivals and national holidays. The Worship Committee supports community outreach by providing Praise Band talent at Community Days and Shelby County Fair Services. Based on favorable feedback from the congregation survey, the worship committee added a second Christmas Eve service at 7:00 pm. It was simple and casual with telling of Christmas story and carols sung with guitar accompaniment and communion by intinction. This child-friendly service format encouraged parents to bring children dressed in pajamas. It was well-received and recommended by the Worship committee to continue this second option in addition to the traditional candlelight service at 10:30 pm. ~ Kristen Davis

Altar Committee The altar committee for 2017 included: Cindy Davis, Sharon Lenhart, Tom & Darlene Woolley, Monte & Dawn Heppard,

We Care Fund Dear Friends in Christ: As we embark on a new year, we want to again extend our gratitude for your continued support of the We Care Fund. This past year has been no different than previous years. People are still in need of help. With that in mind I want to share with you the final numbers from this past year. The number of families you have helped in one way or another was 62. The total amount of funds that was distributed was $7,970. Our continued prayer is the number of families who need help in our little corner of the world as well as across our country will decline. Again, thank you for your help in this ministry. May you have a blessed New Year. Your friends in Christ,

Ron & Linda Leininger, Dick & Linda Jenkins
