Pastor’s Message Today’s Gospel from Matthew states, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain

cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a

lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.

Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your

heavenly Father.” A few weeks ago I spoke about taking the chance and allowing even the

smallest amount of Jesus’ light into our very selves. If we consciously did this each day the

Lord would fill us in a way we can only imagine. Have we invited His light inside of ourselves?

Are we doing this each day whether we are fine or are struggling? I had my hat with the two

small lights under the brim. Perhaps we can live as if we have a hat like this on every day and

the light is the Lord!

February 2, 2017 (Celebrated in Parishes February 4-5)

In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in

consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of

the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day

on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So

too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all

peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the f

following Sunday in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole

Church.

Prayer for Consecrated Persons

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom

as sisters, brothers, religious priests, consecrated virgins, and hermits, as well as members

of Secular Institutes. Renew their knowledge and love of you, and send your Holy Spirit to

help them respond generously and courageously to your will. We ask this through our Lord

Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and

ever. Amen.

PARISH HEALTH MINISTRY

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that is related to the changes in the seasons. SAD begins and ends at about the same time every year. It can occur for some in the summer but it usually occurs during the winter months. The specific cause for SAD remains unknown. However, It is believed to be caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. The decreased day light is also thought to be a trigger for SAD. People who live in the Northern part of the United States are more at risk for this condition. Women are also 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with SAD. SAD is a diagnosable disorder. Symptoms may include irritability, decreased energy, sluggishness, loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed, mood changes, increase of anxiety, sleep problems, depression, and difficulty concentrating. Some suggestions to treat this condition include the the following; Light therapy is the main treatment for SAD, natural sun light can be helpful, counseling, daily exercise, going outdoors, social interaction and support group. JOURNALING FOR HEALTH, an informal group looking at ways journal writing relieves stress, helps clarify problems, and enhances health and spirituality, will be offered Thursday mornings, Feb. 9, 16 and 23, from 10 to 11:45, in Room 9.

Blessing of Marriages

We would like to start a tradition at St. John Neumann parish once a year of blessing the marriages of those celebrating 25 and 50 years of marriage. The blessing will take place during the 4:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, February 25, 2017.

Parish Health Ministry—Please join us for a three week series of exercise classes focusing on balance. Lynn Lueders Is our presenter and has been here before with her excellent presentation “Pieces of the Balance Puzzle”. This program was very well received by our parishioners and there are many requests for her to return. The classes will be on Fridays at 10:00 AM on February 17, 24 and on March 3. Look for more information in future bulletins.

Why Do Catholics Do That: The Same Mass Every Week? If really pressed, we may find that we can recite the entire Mass verbatim, probably even in our sleep. Why is it always the same? The format of the Mass has been preserved throughout the centuries with very little significant change, and seems to reflect the oneness of our Catholic faith. In effect, the Mass we celebrate today is the same Mass that was celebrated by Jesus with the Apostles, and those Apostles with the disciples they made, continuing on through the centuries. Our Mass has as its structural basis two liturgies: Liturgy of the Word, and Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Liturgy of the Word, in which the Scriptures are opened to us and explained in Father’s homily, finds its roots in Judaism, (Jesus’ religion) where in synagogues God’s people open the Scriptures and learn from learned rabbis. The Liturgy of the Eucharist, in which we celebrate the source and summit of our Christian faith, is a re-presentation of the Last Supper, the Passion of Jesus, His Crucifixion, His Resurrection from the dead, and His ascension into Heaven: all made present in the Eucharist we approach to receive. When we attend Mass, we join in the great Mystery of our faith, which makes present to us in the present the past and the promise of our future, with Christians who have gone before us and angels surrounding. We enter into the timeless moment of eternity, to be reordered to enter into the reality of Heaven.

Crusaders Youth Activities Association Soccer Teams
