Men’s Basketball NotesUPIKE vs. Cincinnati-ClermontUPIKE is 5-0 all time against the Cougars, dating back to a 116-77 win during the 2012-13 season. The following year the Bears won 114-55, then 117-83 the next season before topping Clermont twice in 2015-16, 99-62 and 97-55. The teams took a season off from the series but return at the Expo on Friday night.Scouting the CougarsUC-Clermont does not have a player over 6-4 on its roster, but that hasn’t kept it from scoring lots of points and sporting a winning 8-6 record heading into the matchup with UPIKE. Clermont has scored 100 or more points five times this season and even put the ball in the hoop against NCAA DI talent when it lost 127-92 at Tennessee Martin.Jamie Carson makes the offense go with his 14.4 points per con-test, aided by shooting nearly 43 percent from deep and making at least three 3-pointers a game. The Cougars also excel from the free-throw line where they shoot nearly 80 percent as a team.Perfect NumbersUPIKE is off to a 13-0 start and four consistent stats to watch in that run is holding teams under 50 percent shooting from the field, outrebounding opponents, giving up less than 20 turnovers and shooting more free throws. The Bears have done those four things in all 13 wins. Leslie Looking Westbrook-esqueNo, we’re not saying UPIKE senior Darrion Leslie is Russell West-brook, but he has shown the NBA’s star same penchant for flirting with triple-double numbers. The All-American Leslie, who already registered the school’s second recorded triple-double this season, is averaging 13.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He has been the Bears’ leading scorer five times and leader in assists eight times. MSC Dominates the NAIA Top-25 PollNo other conference is represented in the NAIA top-25 poll like the Mid-South. Starting at the top, Georgetown is No. 1, followed by No. 8 UPIKE and No. 9 Lindsey Wilson in the top 10. Campbellsville is 21st and Life is 25th, while Cumberlands is just outside the poll in the receiving votes category. UPIKE’s 61 straight weeks in the top 25 leads active NAIA members. UPIKE Among National Statistics Leaders The Bears rank in the top 10 in 12 different statistical categories, including ranking first in scoring defense (58.2) and field-goal per-centage defense (33.6). UPIKE’s +37.8 scoring margin is the sec-ond largest in the NAIA and its 54.5 percent shooting from the field is second as well. Darrion Leslie, at 67.0%, has the fifth highest shooting mark nationally. Kelly Wells on the Home Court, When Scoring 90Kelly Wells, in his 12th season at UPIKE, is 174-25 at home and when his teams score at least 90 points his record is 128-7. Last season, Wells became the winningest coach in school history, a mark he has only added to at 272-97. Among active NAIA head coaches, Wells ranked 22nd in wins heading into the 2017-18 sea-son. UPIKE Looks to Build on Expo Center Success Since 2013, UPIKE has posted a 79-4 record inside the East Ky. Expo Center.

WellsKelly Wells is in his 12th season as the head coach of the UPIKE men’s basketball team in 2017-18. Wells currently holds a 272-97 record at UPIKE, making him the all-time winningest coach at the school. Wells’ Bears won the 2011 NAIA National Championship and the Morehead, Ky., native was named the NAIA Coach of the Year following that championship season.
UPIKE has put together 10 20-win seasons in the last 11 under Wells’ guidance. Included in that run are the program’s first two 30-win campaigns, coming in 2010-11 and 2013-14. Last season, the Bears finished 28-8 overall and reached their sixth NAIA National Tournament with Wells where they advanced to the quarterfinals.
The Bears’ 31 wins registered during the 2013-14 campaign are the most in program history, while the 17 Mid-South Conference wins that season are a league record as well.
At UPIKE, Wells has coached 21 NAIA All-Americans, including two NAIA Players of the Year in Bruce Reed in 2014 and Kenny Manigault in 2015. That makes 21 of the program’s 26 total All-Americans having played under Wells. There have also been 29 All Mid-South Conference selections to play for wells, including two conference players of the year and one freshman of the year. This is Wells’ 22nd season overall as a head coach (479-202), spending three seasons at Marion County High School from 1995-97, eight seasons at Mason County High School from 1997-2004, one season at Hawai’i Pacific in 2005-06, followed by the last 11 at Pikeville. In the collegiate ranks, Wells holds a 267-116 record through 12 seasons.
At Mason County, Wells captured the 2003 Kentucky State Championship and was runner-up in 2004. He was named coach of the year after both seasons, coaching Chris Lofton who would go on to be an All-American at the University of Tennessee.
As a player, Wells was a three-year men’s basketball letterman at Morehead State from 1992-94. Wells prepped at Rowan County High School, leading the team to three trips to the Kentucky Sweet 16 while earning First-Team All-State honors twice in 1989 and 1990.
Wells resides in Pikeville with his wife Shawne and their children, Kaylee and Mason.
