Second is the highest preseason poll slot for the Bears in program history. A lot of the expectations stem from how UPIKE finished the 2014 season, winning three straight games to finish 4-2 in league play, which was good for third place. Also, defending MSC East champ Lindsey Wilson switched divisions to the West to make it six teams each after Belhaven (Miss.) left the MSC to transition to NCAA Div. III. • There are two big holes to fill, one on offense and the other on defense, and coaches are ex- cited to see who steps up in 2015. Gone due to graduation is UPIKE’s all-time leading tackler (296) in linebacker John-Dudley Hilton and its all-time leader for carries (508) and second best performer in yards (2,284) and touchdowns (27) running back Seth Millar. Early candidates to make up for that production is Quan Weaver at running back after gaining 650 yards with seven scores last season and two players in the secondary on defense in senior Terrell White (21 tackles) and junior Deme- trius Taylor (31). • There is a healthy competition at the quarterback spot with six names on the roster and none set to redshirt as of Aug. 18. Sophomores Sani Warren and R.J. Rosemond Jr., figure to get plenty of looks as both played well throughout 2014. Warren, a graduate of nearby Belfry High School, earned the starting spot last season and ended up throwing for 1,426 yards and 12 touchdowns in just seven games due to injury. While Warren was out, Rosemond Jr., stepped in to throw for 699 yards and a touchdown, including a program-record 99-yard touchdown pass against Cumberland (Tenn.). Other quarterbacks competing to time include junior-college transfer Russell Gordon who has been on campus since the spring, and a trio of freshmen: Jarredd Jarrell (Prestonsburg), Shan- non Patrick (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Robert Madison (Bronx, N.Y.). • It’s not just quarterbacks though, as a large group of receievers are looking to separate themselves from the pack. The top three targets from last season are gone, Shawntez John- son and Shawntay Zachary to graduation and Aaron Jackson left the program after last season. Veterans expected to lead the current pack are redshirt sophomore Austin Pray and true sophomore Eddie Miller III. Pray, a Hazard, Ky., native, caught 21 passes for 152 yards in 2014, while Miller III, out of Wheelersburg, Ohio, hauled in 19 receptions for 235 yards and a touchdown. • Allan Holland Jr., is enjoying continuity heading into his second season, which in many ways feels like a true start to his time as head coach. Holland Jr., took over the team on an interim basis heading into 2014 before having that interim tag removed quickly on Oct. 1. Despite the quick changes, Holland still led the Bears to an impressive 4-2 mark in the MSC East. 2015 UPIKE Bears Football
