I love their personalities, humour, courage and connection with people. Two experiences I have loved in my life was getting up close and personal with dolphins, both at Monkey Mia in Western Australia, and Seaworld in Queensland. And a ‘swim with the dolphins’ experience is definitely on my bucket list! I can remember watching the dolphin show at Seaworld, and being amazed at how the dolphins had been trained to carry out certain ‘tricks’ (whilst also thinking it was a little demeaning for these magnificent creatures to be at the beck and call of humans for their entertainment!). A particular movement I loved was the graceful synchronised leap by two dolphins out the water and back into it. I have been reminded of this image in my reflections over Easter. As I reflect on the death of Jesus, I am reminded that this was also my death; that through my relationship with Jesus I was part of that death. And similarly, Jesus’ rising is my rising to new life too. Whilst for Christ it was suffering and pain, for us, because of Christ’s freely given gift of salvation, it is a graceful, synchronised leap from earthly life, to death, to eternal life, with Jesus right alongside us. The Bible puts it this way: By our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life. May we live each day in the knowledge of the gift we have been given – the ability to live a new life of love daily in Christ, until we make that final leap with Him into eternity with our Heavenly Father. Principal’s Report
Lunch boxes at St Jakobi
It is timely that we have a reminder about the type of foods we prefer in lunch boxes
here at school. We strive hard to ensure school is a place where healthy food is
readily available. We follow the Eat Well SA Schools Healthy Eating Guidelines in
our school Canteen, with Mrs Hoffmann making many items herself from scratch to
ensure less preservatives, additives and colourings. We no longer use lollies as
rewards in classrooms, but negotiate with students non-food rewards that they value
to show we appreciate their great work and behaviour. Our Kitchen classes focus
on plenty of fresh, home grown produce used in recipes that are low in salt, sugar
and excessive fats.
Here at St Jakobi we ask families to remember several things as they pack food for
school:
We discourage junk food eg chips, knowing that these foods on an ‘every-
day’ basis are not a good choice in the short term for their learning, and in
the long term for their health.
We discourage lollies for the same reason, and ask parents not to send
lollies to school. Students will be instructed to leave them in their lunch box
and eat them after school.
We ask that no nuts, particularly peanuts be packed in lunch boxes. We
understand that many bars and so on do have the ‘may contain traces of
nuts’ warning on them and allow them here at school, but we ask parents
to be understanding of the fact that we cannot have either food containing
a significant amount of nuts or nuts here at school due to the risk they pose
to the students with life threatening nut allergies.
We ask that an easy-to-access fruit snack is provided for a mid-morning
snack, to keep the brain fed for the concentrated learning that occurs in the
foundational subjects of literacy and numeracy, which are largely done
prior to lunch.
Please ensure a drink bottle is provided each day to enable us to assist
students in keeping adequately hydrated. (We have noted a huge
improvement in this since our lovely new drink taps have been installed!)
Please ensure that any Birthday treats you might wish to send in to share
with your child’s class is discussed and pre-arranged with the class teacher,
who will be able to fill you in with any allergy requirements from your
child’s class.
Absence from School
I feel absolutely blessed to be able to participate in the Canberra Camp this year with
our wonderful Year 6/7 students and staff. I will therefore be away from the
school in Week 11 (10th-16th April). Please note that Mrs Sarah Lowke will be Teacher-in-Charge in my absence, and will be
supported by Mr Travis Saegenschitter in his Leadership role as Business Manager. I would ask that any matters that require urgent
attention be directed to Mrs Lowke if of an educational nature, or Mt Sagenschnitter if of a business nature. If educational matters
are non-urgent and can be held over to my return in the first week of the school holidays, it would be appreciated. For any
emergency matters, I will be contactable on my mobile during my absence, but please be aware that I may be unable to take or
return a call immediately.

Hats extend into Terms 2 and 3
In beginning to review our Sunsmart policy, it has become apparent that there have been some changes in recommendations from
the Cancer Council regarding the use of hats and suncream in the last year or two. This is considered especially important for
Primary aged children, where we are both setting up lifelong habits and protecting young skin.
Whilst I need to do a little more research, I would like to give advance notice to say that the use of hats and suncream will extend
someway into Term 2 and begin towards the end of Term 3 in future, instead of a just Terms 1 and 4. I will put out a new policy
prior to the holidays to let parents know exactly what the new expectations will be for all students and staff at our school from Term
2 onwards.
We also have the staff from the Cancer Council booked to come and take a workshop with our school staff about suncare, both
in regard to the students in their care and to themselves as employees of the school.
Quality Schools Survey
Feed-back is very important to all organisations in ascertaining how they are performing, and where improvements may be made
for the benefit of all. Here at St Jakobi we greatly value the feed-back we get from you, whether formally or informally, and strive
to incorporate changes from your feedback into what we do.
Early next term, in the first few weeks of May, all families will have the opportunity to complete a formal survey about our school,
giving your thoughts and feelings on what is occurring here. In the past this has been done through the Better Schools Survey tool,
but this year we will be using a new survey tool entitled Quality Schools. The survey will benefit everyone in the school by providing
valuable information in such areas as the teaching and learning program, our values and our ties with the community, so that we
can celebrate our successes and work to improve our educational services where needed.
All students in Years 5 to 7, all staff and all families will be invited to participate in the survey, which will be conducted through
email. We are using an independent company, PCRADII, to assist us in conducting this important survey. This means that I can
guarantee that your responses to the survey will remain confidential. If you do not wish to participate in this survey you will have
the opportunity to opt out using the link provided at the time of the survey. While participation in the survey is voluntary, I encourage
you to take part, as it is a significant opportunity to voice your opinion about your child’s school in a non-identifiable and confidential
way.
Once the results of the survey are received, they will be shared and discussed at a School Council level, with School Council
providing a summary of the survey findings to our school community. The information will also be used both for our internal Strategic
Planning, and for our externally required School Improvement Plan.
Instructions on when and how to access the survey will be sent to all participants early in Term 2.
Headlice Volunteers
THANK YOU to those parents that have volunteered to help with headlice checks
however we desperately require parent helpers for headlice check.
Checks are carried out only once a term, Week 2. Do join the team, all you
need is a DCSI Screening and a Valuing Safe Communities certificate.
Please register your interest at the front office.
